The Development and Alumni Office (DARO) exists to support the University of Birmingham's academic and student community by engaging, inspiring, and celebrating alumni, individuals, and charitable funders who give their money, time, and networks to support the University’s strategic priorities. The Office, which is comprised of five teams, is focused on fundraising and volunteering from alumni, organisations and individuals who are passionate about changing lives, through funding various research projects, supporting student bursaries, mentoring students, and providing internships, as well as providing a versatile programme of engagement opportunities for our global alumni community.

As part of an award-winning team, you will work with our Head of Legacies and Endowments and Legacy and Endowment Officer to generate new gifts to the University and to care for our existing donors. Headway Gloucestershire was established in 1987 and since then we have been working to make a positive difference to the lives of adults with an acquired brain injury. We provide specialist recovery support and respite through our centre based Day Service and outreach support through our Community Links Service. We provide group and one to one sessions to support individuals.

Open every weekday, Headway House is at the heart of Headway Gloucestershire.  We provide a structured programme of activities for individuals to choose from. Our programme is designed to support participants to work toward their own recovery goals and gain insight into strategies that support individuals to manage the physical, cognitive, sensory, emotional and behavioural outcomes which can occur following an acquired brain injury. Peer group sessions enable us to harness the recovery benefits of peer contact and support.

We have been successful in receiving three years of funding to deliver services in up to five locations in Gloucestershire and are recruiting a part-time Support Worker to support the delivery of our Hubs – to meet and support the recovery needs of individuals with acquired brain injury in their community. The Support Worker will be responsible for the delivery of group sessions designed to support individuals with acquired brain injury work toward their recovery goals. Responsibilities include: -

• To deliver professional, impartial, enabling and outcome focused support to Individuals with acquired brain injury. To provide support for clients with complex needs to support their recovery, wellbeing, independence and autonomy.
• Supporting the Hub Lead to schedule, develop and deliver sessions.
• Provide Key-working to individuals: - to use an enabling approach to support individuals to plan and work toward their recovery goals ensuring that planned activities are delivered and support is tailored to meet the needs of each individual survivor to maximise our contribution to their recovery.
• Providing cover at Headway House where required.
• Ensure that safeguarding training and understanding is kept current and that individuals are safeguarded.

Primarily carrying out the role in community Hubs, you will work to clearly established quality standards. You will be joining a motivated and dynamic team of staff and volunteers working to making a difference to individuals with acquired brain injury in Gloucestershire.

Main tasks and responsibilities

Key areas of focus will include:

• Supporting young people, building and maintaining positive relationships with and recognizing their different needs and starting points. Have strong commitment to the values of acceptance and respect within youth work and being a positive role model. Encourage young people to take an active role in social action projects, youth voice and young leader activities

• Working together with the team in planning and delivery of full program offer, including evening youth club sessions and off-site educational visits, including to our outdoor centre in Cumbria with occasional over night stays. Be alert to issues of safeguarding and child protection, ensuring the welfare and safety of young people is promoted and prioritized. The successful candidate will spend their time delivering a frontline welfare benefits triaging service with the support of a senior caseworker. 

To succeed, you will need experience of advice work which includes using a benefits calculator and signposting. The role also involves managing our telephone and email inbox into the advice service and obtaining feedback about the service from clients alongside initial advice giving. The role could include some short-term casework including concessionary travel claims when capacity allows.

You will need excellent communication skills and be unphased by people presenting with multiple issues, often in emotional distress. You’ll be excited by the challenge of learning new things and have a good knowledge of the services used by disabled people.

Our moderators manage Facebook groups of up to 18,000 virtual challenge participants. You will be working with some of the biggest names in the sector, supporting them to raise five and six figure sums. 

This role is perfect for skilled fundraisers who can provide excellent supporter care, and is best suited as an additional source of income (the majority of our team are freelancers and consultants). You must be able to begin moderation at 9am (or earlier), wrap up by 9pm and adhere to our sub-three hour response time. 

As a Fundraising Group Moderator, you would be responsible for:

• Becoming the voice of the cause you are representing, adhering to their brand guidelines at all times

• Identifying, escalating and signposting any safeguarding issues

• Managing your own time and work on own initiative

• Responding to all post and queries in under three hours

• Maximising registration conversions and fundraiser activation 

• Providing fundraising support to challenge participants

• Ensuring that the group is a safe, constructive and positive environment

• Going above and beyond at all times to provide participants with an incredible experience

Our moderation takes place between 9am and 9pm, Monday-Sunday. Different challenges have different requirements and whilst you need to be on hand to monitor the group during 9am-9pm, the role does allow for a great deal of personal flexibility.

The ideal candidate will have a minimum of 3 years' professional fundraising experience. They will understand the importance of stewarding relationships and be committed to always acting in the best possible way for the charities we work so hard to support.

Full training will be provided alongside regular one to one and monthly team meetings. 

On a day to day basis you will:

• Work off your own initiative and have exceptional time management

• Be the charity representative for the event

• Engage with participants using a warm, friendly and informal tone

• Use personal Facebook profile to moderate groups (this allows us to build relationships with participants)

• Encourage and motivate participants 

• Work on GivePanel and other similar platforms to manage registrations 

• Post engaging content on a daily basis 

• Identify, report and signpost all safeguarding concerns

Essential

• At least three years’ professional fundraising experience

• Have own Facebook profile and strong understanding of the platform

• Be available for a minimum of 3 days a week (including one weekend day)

Swarthmoor Hall in Ulverston is a place of international significance as the birth of the Quaker movement. It comprises a small historic visitor attraction with gardens, a café, on site holiday accommodation plus facilities for the local community. Swarthmoor Hall has lots to offer local visitors and tourists, it is a great place to work with an excellent team. We have plans to develop the attraction further, this along with increasing visitor numbers means we need two new staff. 

We’re looking for motivated and flexible staff to support us opening the Hall and gardens to more visitors, as well as promoting and supervising our self-catering holiday accommodation and café to be open year-round. 

In this role, you will bring experience of managing people, and you will have skills and abilities from working in a range of relevant work settings e.g. café/holiday accommodation/visitor attraction. You will bring lots of energy and ideas on how we can continue to increase the numbers of visitors and improve their experience.

The site is open all year round in 2025, Wednesday to Friday as well as some weekends and bank holidays, and we’re looking to extend this in 2026 and beyond as we grow and develop.
