About the role
Smart Works are looking to appoint a HR Advisor to join our People team at a time of significant growth for the organisation. Working closely with the existing team of two, the HR Advisor will play a crucial role in developing the centralisation of the function for all 11 centres across the UK.
The HR Advisor will manage the employee lifecycle staff processes and the trustee recruitment processes, supporting the Head of People in maintaining a professional and efficient function and contributing to the delivery of the People Teams plans and objectives.
An important part of the role is to build excellent working relationships with employees working across Smart Works. The successful candidate will also identify opportunities for process improvements and automation.

Duties and responsibilities

Manage the HR Inbox, advising managers and staff on terms and conditions of employment and legislation relevant to specific policies and procedures.
- Managing the recruitment inbox, provide guidance on staffing requirements.
- Lead user of the ATS system, oversee the recruitment process, posting job adverts, scheduling interviews, drafting letters and contracts.
- Support trustee recruitment, posting job adverts, liaising with trustees and co-ordinating responses via the recruitment inbox.
- Manage the onboarding and offboarding of employees and interns, including induction plans and process, coordinating probation reviews and exit interviews where appropriate.
- Day to day administration of Breathe HRIS, setting up of new profiles, calculating annual bank holidays, managing employee changes and document merge/uploads.
- Compile monthly payroll information.
- Provide advice to line managers and staff in relation to policies, tailoring communication to individual needs.
- Maintaining timeframes on HR projects and annual processes, such as appraisals.
- Compile monthly HR stats and reports as and when needed.
- Contribute to HR Projects as they arise.

You’ll be responsible, alongside our Head of Content, for producing our world-class lessons, with help from a supportive, collaborative team and a wealth of journalistic expertise from across The Economist Group. You will be a creative teacher, or ex-teacher, who is excited to turn the biggest issues in the news into engaging lessons for 10- to 16-year olds. You’ll research global topics and consider the best angles and innovative activities to produce a lesson every week. These lessons will build children’s essential skills and knowledge about the news through discussion-based activities. The activities will be inventive and varied and beyond your “usual” lesson planning. RESPONSIBILITIES
Create Topical Talk classroom resources for children (60%)
● Research and pitch lesson plans that cover the most important facts, arguments, perspectives and questions
● Write, edit and proofread teaching resources. Your core responsibility will be to create a weekly, 1-hour “Headlines” lesson
● Collaborate with journalists at The Economist to ensure all work is of the highest quality
● Work with our Graphic Designer on the look and feel of the content
● Manage diaries, build rapport and communicate effectively to ensure deadlines are met
● Seek out and conduct interviews with topic experts
● Work with the Head of Content to monitor and evaluate the success of lessons
Design resources for one-off current affairs workshops/events for children (20%)
● Create one-off student workshops and events, from the idea-generation stage to writing, proofreading, delivery and evaluation
● Create lesson and website content for the annual Topical Talk Festival, where students join online discussions about the news
Teach lessons, facilitate student discussions and train teachers (20%)
● Facilitate online discussions during Topical Talk Festivals between young people on the Topical Talk Student Hub

Right now, we’re looking for someone like you to join our Bedfordshire Young People’s Team. We’re here to support anyone under 18 in Bedfordshire who is affected by substance misuse. Many of the children and young people we work with are also facing other challenges, such as school exclusion, homelessness, mental health, unemployment, or experience of the care system.
Your challenge? To undertake a portfolio of cases, generally incorporating the more complex situations, and deputise for Service Managers as and when required. Supervising the work of Practitioners and Support Workers will be important too, as will prioritising activities and monitoring service delivery, outputs and outcomes and providing guidance, training and clinical supervision. And, all the while, we’ll expect you to work in a way that recognises and values diversity and make the most of your understanding of the functional model of alcohol, the model of change and CBT.
An energetic and confident self‐starter, you have a qualification in health/social care, youth and community care (e.g. NVQ Level 4 or above, DipSW, Mental Health Nursing, Counselling, Addiction Studies). Alternatively, we’ll consider candidates with experience of working in the substance misuse field with a commitment to complete NVQ Level 4 Health and Social Care or equivalent. You should also have experience of partnership working as well as the ability to maintain constructive relationships with a broad range of internal and external stakeholders from a wide range of services and disciplines. About the role
As the Director for London, you will be accountable to the Chief Operating Officer for the overall strategic direction and performance of the charity in London, contributing to Sustrans-wide strategic development, as a member of Sustrans’ senior leadership team.
Managing 4 direct reports from multi-disciplinary teams across the city, you will manage resources, providing effective, positive leadership to the heads of teams, in order to deliver Sustrans’ strategy and business plan priorities and initiatives across London.
Strengthening our strategic relationships with key organisations and people, such as Transport for London (TfL), local authorities, the Mayor’s Office and politicians, you will positively influence decision-makers in the field of sustainable transport.
You will be responsible for income generation through business development, identifying new areas of funding, guiding your teams to do the same. You will build and manage relationships with key funding bodies and partners in order to secure funds for project delivery and implementation and to help catalyse change in London.
This role will require travel and work at locations as necessary to undertake projects on behalf of Sustrans. Candidates should be based in or close to London, with 2-3 days per week in our London Hub, based in Brixton.

About you

Aquarius is a charity that helps people and communities overcome the harm caused by alcohol, drugs and gambling. Right now, we’re looking for a self-confident and energetic individual with a good understanding of gambling, substance misuse and health related issues, to provide a vital support service for individuals with gambling related needs.
Working flexibly across the community and within multi-agency partnership settings on an outreach basis, we’ll rely on you to engage people in a variety of interventions, using a person-centred approach. A core part of the role will involve addressing holistic support needs that could include employment related issues, family work interventions, issues of exploitation, physical and emotional health, domestic abuse and support to engage in rehabilitation. Whatever it takes, in fact, to empower them to reduce risk, increase resilience and achieve positive outcomes.
To succeed, you’ll need significant experience of engaging effectively with clients in an addictions or social care setting. You’ll also need knowledge of primary, secondary and other outreach settings and a good understanding of the functional model. Used to liaising with voluntary and statutory agencies and health professionals, you have a flexible approach and lots of initiative. You also have good IT skills (particularly Microsoft Office) and are willing to travel throughout the area in order to get the job done.

Right now, our Bedfordshire Young People’s service is looking for a Complex Needs Practitioner to join the team. This role will be in partnership with Bedfordshire Youth Offending Service and will require some co-location from the Youth Offending Offices around Bedfordshire to be an integral part of both teams.
Your challenge? To provide information and advice, brief interventions and long term structured support to young people who are using drugs and alcohol or being impacted by someone else’s use. You will be conducting assessments, risk assessments, care-planning and working directly with other services such as schools, social care, health provisions, alternative education providers and mental health services.The successful candidate must have exceptional organisational skills and the ability to work with other agencies both face to face, email and via telephone.
An energetic and confident self-starter, you will be required to hold a qualification in health/social care, youth and community work (e.g. NVQ Level 3 or above, DipSW, Mental Health Nursing, Counselling, Addiction Studies). Alternatively, we will consider candidates with experience of working in the substance misuse field with a commitment to complete NVQ Level 3 Health and Social Care. The programme holds a particular focus on trauma and trauma-informed practice, including a specialist module on working with the impact of trauma, and on trauma-informed practice in education. The programme runs for one year full-time, or two years part-time.
