Fauna & Flora is seeking a highly experienced and motivated conservation professional to fulfil the role of Senior Programme Manager, Eastern & Southern Africa, providing and facilitating the enabling conditions for staff, projects and partners in the region to excel. The role has a capacity building focus and that also acts as a backstop and assumes overall responsibility for Fauna & Flora’s work in the region.

The successful candidate will have operational and managerial experience in conservation project and programme management, including people management, risk management and mitigation, proposal writing, technical and financial management and reporting of large funds and grants, preferably with statutory or multilateral/bilateral donors and preferably in Africa, as well as a commitment to organisational and national legal compliance.

Excellent people management skills are essential to the role to ensure a professional and motivated team that delivers effectively against project aims, objectives and timelines.  The role requires a skilled and credible communicator, who is confident in developing the capacity of in-country teams and partners, both directly and by facilitating the engagement and skills of UK based cross-cutting teams, and ensuring the focus remains on in-country leadership and delivery of results.

The successful applicant will also have substantial experience in the field of conservation, a commitment to rights-based conservation and upholding the highest standards on social safeguard and safeguarding matters. The Asylum Reform Initiative (ARI) is an alliance of nine leading national organisations collaborating to secure deep change towards a fair, compassionate and well-managed UK approach to refugees. Central to its strategy has been incubating, launching and backing the broader, public-facing Together With Refugees campaign coalition, now with over 600 national and local member groups from across the refugee sector and beyond. The ARI team provides a dynamic hub that supports Together With Refugees, coordinating the development and delivery of the coalition’s campaign strategy.

About the role

This is a new role. Working closely with the rest of the ARI team, One Strong Voice, and the newly formed Together With Refugees Steering Group, it will play a key part in shaping and delivering the ambitious next phase of the Together With Refugees strategy. The Deputy Director will lead on movement building, strengthening the coalition, and developing the reach, activation levels and effectiveness of the coalition’s grassroots campaign organising to secure changes in policy and practice. At the heart of this is the engagement and leadership of activists with lived experience as refugees, and of member groups that are led by and for refugees – so advancing the goal of a transition to leadership by people with lived experience across the coalition. Key to this work will be building the capacity, effectiveness and impact of the One Strong Voice network to support lived experience campaigners, organisations and leaders at all levels. The Deputy Director will also contribute to wider leadership of the team’s work including fundraising, support for – and accountability to – coalition leadership structures, and effective delivery of the team’s work programme.

The Deputy Director will be a natural collaborator and relationship builder, able to work with diplomacy to drive forward our ambitious strategic aims. You will need ambition, energy and an ability to work at both strategic and more detailed levels. This could be the right opportunity for a range of potential candidates. A good technical background and understanding of a range of conservation issues is essential as is proven experience of influencing donor priorities, negotiating and approving statutory donor grant agreements.

Key Responsibilities include:

• Work with the Chief Operating Officer (COO) and the Executive management team to design, develop and embed a high-quality HR function to support the employee life cycle.

• Responsible for ensuring all policies, procedures, and processes relating to people and culture, work effectively, efficiently and in line with legal requirements.

• Responsible for all People matters, ensuring they are handled fairly and consistently in line with policies and procedures.

• Support and advise line managers on People, EDI and change management activities, including promotions, disciplinary, capability and grievance procedures.

• Organise line manager training to ensure line managers understand their responsibilities and apply policies consistently.

• Responsible for the candidates’ recruitment experience. Ensure candidates receive a consistent and professional recruitment experience.

• Responsible for job descriptions, person specifications, recruitment packs and job adverts.

• Ensure offboarding processes are robust and implemented consistently to safeguard the charity’s assets and to comply with Data Protection rules.

• Lead on the delivery and growth of the ‘Kinship Friendly Employers’ scheme, driving growth in the scheme and the number of bronze, silver and gold partners

• Ensure Kinship role models ‘Kinship Friendly’ employment practices and seek opportunities to share these as examples with other HR professionals.

• Support fundraising efforts with corporate supporters who are ‘Kinship Friendly Employers’

Essential criteria includes:

• HR qualification or significant demonstrable experience.

• Coaching qualification or significant demonstrable experience.

• Demonstrable experience of supporting the development of a high-quality People function within a growing organisation.

• Demonstrable experience working in a changing and flexible organisation.

• Demonstrable problem-solving and conflict resolution abilities.

This is a key role leading supporter acquisition for a well-known charity. The post-holder will be responsible for developing and delivering strategies to bring in new donors and grow income.

Person Specifications:

Essential:

• Extensive experience in Individual Giving acquisition at a senior level, managing multi-million-pound investment budgets.

• Proven expertise in multi-channel direct response fundraising, including DRTV, digital, direct mail, and direct dialogue.

• Strong financial acumen, with experience in budget management, forecasting, and investment decision-making.

• Demonstrated ability to lead and develop high-performing teams.

• Exceptional relationship management skills, with experience managing external agencies and key stakeholders.

• Data-driven approach with a strong understanding of fundraising performance metrics, analytics, and insight-led decision-making.

• Experience working cross-functionally with retention, stewardship, and legacy teams to align acquisition with long-term donor value.

• A demonstrable passion for fundraising.

• Significant experience in at least two of the three following areas – F2F (or D2D), Telemarketing, digital, TV & other media.

• Able to create and implement strategic plans.

• Experience of successfully managing staff, particularly Direct Marketing professionals or face to face programme managers.
