We’re looking for an experienced, passionate, strategic and creative Head of Development to join us as part of a job share and lead our support and capacity-building offer. 

You will have strategic oversight of our support offer to the voluntary, community, faith and social enterprise (VCFSE) sector in Somerset, leading on the provision of targeted support and infrastructure services. The Role

SERT is re-organising our structure geographically into three Catchment Clusters in the South East (defined as South London, East and West). Having conducted a successful pilot in the East, we are now expanding this approach to the new South London and West Catchment Clusters.

The West Catchment Cluster (WCC) requires an individual with proven leadership experience who can lead this newly formed team and strategically maximise SERT’s impact in the predominantly Surrey-based catchments of the Loddon, Wey and Mole.

Key Duties and Responsibilities

• Help to establish and enhance a ‘one-team’ ethos across the CC, whilst also ensuring it is embedded within the wider organisation
• Lead WCC’s prioritisation on the key activities (both restoration and engagement) that we wish to undertake in our Surrey Catchments.
• Direct line management of two roles (this may increase in the future):

i)Working with the Natural Flood Management Lead to grow the opportunities of using nature to hold back water in the landscape 

ii) Managing the Catchment Manager to ensure our Catchment Partnerships are action-based.

• Ensure WCC is at the right tables where decisions affecting its rivers are being made and has an important and respected voice in those decisions.

What We Are Looking For

This role is an exciting challenge and will require you to build on the foundations of what has already been achieved within these catchments. You will need to maximise impact by working with our Specialist Teams to priorities SERT’s activities and strategically guide river restoration projects.  You will also work closely with our Working With Communities team (WWC) to improve engagement with the communities who live along these rivers. It is desirable if you have a good overview of river catchments, data monitoring and the role that nature-based solutions (such as Natural Flood Management) play in providing multiple benefits.

About You

Besides having a passion for rivers, we require an individual who can confidently develop and grow a new team, whilst seeking new opportunities for impact. You will be adept at business development and will be comfortable supporting strategic relationships with catchment partners, local government, water companies, local businesses and environmental NGOs. You will need a good overview of Health and Safety best practise, empowering our Restoring River Catchments (RRC) team to undertake effective project delivery and risk management in the field.

This role is predominantly internally focused shaping the strategy, strengthening systems, and empowering teams with the evidence and direction needed to create effective advocacy. It is also an exceptional opportunity for someone aspiring to future executive leadership.

About you

We’re looking for someone who brings:

• Leadership experience in advocacy, campaigns, media or public affairs (ideally within the charity or campaigning sector).
• A deep understanding of political and legislative processes in England & Wales.
• Ability to lead multidisciplinary teams and drive cross-organisational planning.
• Strong strategic judgement with a track record of influencing policy or social change.
• Experience managing operational risk in complex or high-profile advocacy environments.
• Collaborative leadership style and the ability to inspire, motivate and mentor others.
• A passion for animal welfare and a commitment to creating meaningful, positive change.

Experience in animal welfare, environmental or social justice sectors — as well as existing political contacts — are welcome advantages.

Role Overview

The Trainer is responsible for creating and delivering high-quality training and development programmes for unpaid carers, professionals in the Education, Health & Social care sectors, and for corporate partners. This role is key to empowering carers with knowledge about their rights, and upskilling professionals and businesses to better support carers. The Trainer will also facilitate 'train the trainer' sessions to build capacity and extend the reach of the service's educational mission.

Person Specification

• Proven experience in designing and delivering training to adult learners
• Experience in developing inclusive and accessible training materials for diverse audiences
• Experience in evaluating training effectiveness and adapting approaches based on feedback and outcomes.
• Strong understanding of adult learning principles and training methodologies.
• Sound knowledge of safeguarding principles and procedures, with the ability to embed these into training content.
• Awareness of barriers faced by unpaid carers and the importance of inclusive practice in community engagement.
• Excellent presentation, facilitation, and group management skills.
• Ability to communicate clearly and effectively with a wide range of stakeholders.
• Strong interpersonal skills, with the ability to build trust and rapport.
• Competence in creating engaging and accessible training resources using digital tools and formats.
• Demonstrate a thorough understanding of health and safety procedures
• Ability to proactively identify and manage risks to ensure a safe environment for all participants
