About the Role

In your role you will be responsible for developing, delivering and overseeing RSPB’s wider countryside conservation work and managing associated staff on the islands to ensure conservation of the many species and habitats of international importance and so ensure delivery of relevant outcomes of RSPB’s Saving Nature Strategy across Orkney. The role will lead, manage and develop the conservation team in the area, helping to deliver a work programme focused on our priority landscapes including some of Scotland’s rarest and most iconic species and habitats.

This will be achieved by using detailed knowledge and experience of the appropriate conservation toolkit to ensure we achieve our objectives. This may include site safeguard casework, species recovery work, land management advice, overseeing conservation projects and engagement in land use and marine policy.

This post will have a key role in instigating and managing programmes and projects across the Area and in association with RSPB colleagues. This includes those led by RSPB in the local area such as Species on the Edge and those where delivery is achieved across wider partnerships. You will be proactive with other island stakeholders to deliver ambitious targets for key marine, upland, wetland, peatland & farmland species and habitats. The position will have an important external role, building positive relationships with key partners and stakeholders so that RSPB’s policies and messages are understood and furthered within relevant partnerships and fora. As the conservation leader within the area team, you will contribute expertise to the Area management structures, monitoring and reporting on the work plan and development of new work plans and/or project ideas. You will also be expected to contribute expertise and experience to RSPB’s policy and advocacy work and contribute to the delivery of our funding and communications objectives, through communicating our conservation messages in various ways.

You will ensure we can identify threats to priority species and habitats and work with internal staff and external stakeholders to develop and implement projects, strategies and programmes of work to address these threats. You will lead on casework response in the islands and manage projects and internal budgets and staff. You will help shape where we carry out species recovery work across the islands and help spot out future opportunities to work on our key species and habitats. You will help shape and deliver the Orkney Local biodiversity action plan in partnership with stakeholders. You will liaise with our research, planning and policy colleagues to conserve our island wildlife

Essential skills, knowledge and experience:

• Degree-level qualification in a relevant subject or ability to show equivalent work experience
• Experience of managing staff or volunteers
• Experience of managing projects
• Knowledge of the wildlife and habitats of Orkney and relevant delivery mechanisms available to conserve them
• Ability to form effective teams (both internal and partnership) and work effectively as a team player and leader
• Excellent communication skills (verbal, written and presentational) – including an ability to speak confidently and cogently in public and advocating a position to those who may have a different view
• Experience of working to survey, protect and/or manage important sites, species or habitats
• Ability to rapidly analyse significant quantities of information, prioritise and balance a diverse workload often to tight deadlines
• Sufficient understanding of landscape scale conservation; land use and management; planning systems; to be able to lead casework response and advise staff on appropriate responses and interventions.

Desirable skills, knowledge and experience:

• Experience of raising funds from external sources for projects
• Experience of public engagement work
• Experience of major site conservation casework
• Specialist conservation knowledge in relevant areas, such as wetland, upland, farmland, marine conservation

Our award-winning approach helps young people to realise their full personal potential by providing training and development programmes that enable them to jumpstart their careers and develop a core suite of social, emotional and broadcast skills. At the helm of our operation is Reprezent Radio, a dynamic youth-led community radio station based in South London. Since 2010 the station’s hallmark has been empowering young voices and championing the narratives of diverse and underrepresented communities, and as a result many of our beneficiaries are those deemed ‘hardest-to-reach’ (young black South Londoners, early school leavers, second generation immigrants).

Our unique training model combines in-person training courses with work experience placements at the station, resulting in a cohesive programme of entry-to-advanced level training provision and an active waiting list of over two thousand people.

Location

This role is a hybrid position, working both from home and with regular attendance required at our office/training space in Peckham and our station headquarters in Brixton.

Responsibilities

• Work with the Executive Team to develop a Sustainable Growth Strategy for our training department. This should contain concrete plans for income generation and beneficiary impact KPIs for the short, medium and long term. This process will involve:

  • Strategic analysis of competitors and market need.

  • Critical evaluation of existing frameworks and assets.

  • Researching available grants and fundraising opportunities.

  • Exploring other revenue opportunities through networks and brand partnerships.

• Once the Sustainable Growth Strategy has been drawn up, management of its implementation and ongoing development. This will include:

  • Writing and developing bids to appropriate funders and corporate partners.

  • Undertaking dynamic reviews of the programme after each major round of delivery, reviewing trainee feedback and outcomes and adapting the provision accordingly.

  • Developing new offerings to meet market need.

  • Overseeing work experience placements within the radio station, ensuring that the progress and wellbeing of beneficiaries is monitored and developed.

  • Optimising the use of available facilities.

• Overseeing the end-to-end delivery of funded projects, from application through to evaluation.

• Line managing the training team.

Requirements

• Significant experience in strategic planning and programme development.

Youth Realities currently runs four core programmes, underpinning our three outlined priority pillars: prevention, intervention and healing.

• Deepin Relationships - healthy relationships education in communities and schools 
• Young Women's IDVA Support - specialist, long term support for young survivors of abuse and violence in their close relationships 
• Deepin Dance - a weekly dance space for young women aged 16-25 who have survived relationship violence

About Brightside

Brightside is on a mission to help young people make confident and informed decisions about their future. For over 20 years, we’ve used technology to connect young people facing barriers with inspiring mentors. We deliver online mentoring programmes in collaboration with schools, universities, businesses and charities to provide young people with access to networks, online career information and high-quality mentoring. 

Role overview

The Project Support Officer will support our Programmes Team with activity related to project delivery while members of the team are on maternity leave. The postholder will be responsible for completing a variety of project delivery tasks that support the smooth running of our online mentoring. These tasks include administrative support through our online mentoring platform, data entry and data monitoring, training our volunteers to be mentors and inducting young people onto our programmes.

Key responsibilities

• Administrative support for our projects, including:
  • Supporting the programmes team to book regular meetings with partners
  • Monitoring a centralised support inbox for our partners
  • Monitoring a centralised support inbox for our mentors and mentees
  • Writing emails and other communications to our project users
  • Monitoring and reporting on mentee and mentor engagement on our projects
  • Moderating user messages and user profiles
  • Conducting safety spot checks on recorded video calls
  • Data entry on Salesforce related to our projects and users
  • Data entry on project and task progress on our project management system
  • Setting up zoom calls for training sessions and managing registrations
  • Inviting mentees and mentors to the mentoring platform, monitoring progress, and producing reports for partners
• Delivering mentor training sessions
• Delivering and supporting delivery of mentee induction sessions and other activity for young people (such as assemblies)
• Taking notes during meetings and monitoring actions
• Supporting our quality assurance processes by testing our projects and proofreading our materials
• Other administrative tasks that may be reasonably required

Desirable criteria

We are especially interested in candidates who:

• Have experience using Salesforce or other CRM software
• Have experience of project management, or are interested in a career in project management
• Have experience of delivering training to young people

A DBS check at the enhanced level will be required for successful applicants

Salary and benefits

Salary: £24,900 - £27,200 (£14,940 - £16,500 actual based on 22.5 hours a week)

Contract: Fixed term (ending 30 April 2025)

Hours of work: 22.5 hours per week

Holiday allowance: 25 days (pro-rata for part-time staff depending on join date)

Other benefits include: Three additional leave days over Christmas, three days volunteering leave, employer pension contributions, flexible working hours, regular staff socials, a tenancy deposit loan scheme, up to one month ‘work from anywhere’ policy and the option of buying up to five additional days of annual leave
