CONTEXT OF THIS ROLE:
At Purposeful, communications is political. It is how we amplify girls’ voices, sharpen feminist narratives, and push back against regressive agendas. The Communications Director will sit at the heart of this work - shaping and delivering a bold communications strategy aligned with Purposeful’s vision, mission, and growth.
This role leads the stewardship of Purposeful’s voice, visual identity, and storytelling practice, ensuring that everything we produce - whether op-eds, reports, campaigns, or digital content - carries our politics with clarity and conviction. The Communications Director will work closely with the Co-CEOs and across all Purposeful teams, including Advocacy, grant-making, Learning & Insights, Programmes, and Resource Mobilisation, to amplify girls’ organising, showcase our impact, and influence the broader philanthropic and activist ecosystem.
This is both a strategic and hands-on role, requiring a deep commitment to feminist movements, an instinct for storytelling as political practice, and a proven track record of positioning organisations on the global stage.
SCOPE OF WORK
1. Communications Strategy & Leadership

Lead on delivery and implementation of a new communications strategy, building on 2025 planning foundations.
-
Work closely with the Co-CEOs and director team to horizon scan and adapt strategy in response to organisational vision and external landscape.

Provide leadership to a small team of staff and consultants (designers, digital specialists, artists) and work collaboratively with partner communications leads on joint campaigns and initiatives.

Meticulously manage and forecast the communications and editorial budget, ensuring value for money and strong planning.

Track and analyse content performance, using insights to refine reach and engagement.
2. Storytelling & Content Development

Oversee the creation of compelling storytelling content that highlights Purposeful’s impact, amplifies girls’ and young feminists’ voices, and influences funders.

Lead editorial planning and content workflows, balancing evergreen storytelling with crisis-response or time-sensitive outputs.

Oversee production and capture of content from live and digital events (webinars, IG Lives, panels, etc.).

Coordinate brand refresh projects, including a website refresh, and strengthen Purposeful’s digital visibility with a focus on graphic-led content across social platforms.
3. Writing & Editorial Oversight

Review and edit all external content to ensure quality, editorial standard, and alignment with Purposeful’s voice and values.

Write op-eds, blogs, social media posts, campaign messaging, press materials, and executive summaries.

Collaborate with colleagues in Learning & Insights to integrate data into storytelling and publications.

Edit and manage the production of publications and reports, commissioning artists and graphic designers as needed.

Provide editorial oversight for media projects, including radio, film, and animation.
4. Media Engagement & Positioning

Cultivate strong relationships with international, regional, and local media outlets.

Proactively position Purposeful in global and regional conversations, ensuring girls’ and feminist movements’ voices are at the centre.

Lead on preparing and supporting spokespersons, including Co-CEOs and external partners, for media engagement.

Design and execute media strategies for key campaigns, events, and publications.
PERSON SPECIFICATION
Essential Experience & Skills

About the role
We’re looking for a creative and confident Content & Communications Coordinator to join our busy Digital and Marketing team at Imperial College Union. This role will be key in strengthening our online presence and improving student engagement with the Union. The successful candidate will manage our social media channels and content to drive two-way conversations, to increase awareness of the Union’s work, and help us better understand what they care about.
You will be our in-house journalist; planning and delivering content that speaks to our varied audiences. You’ll build strong relationships across the Union and College, writing creative copy and curating innovative social media content. Using your in-depth knowledge of social media, you will be aware of emerging trends across all platforms and create content that attracts and retains the interest and attention of our members. You will work closely with colleagues across the Union, including our elected Officer Trustees, to support them to reach more students and deliver key messages. What you would be doing
Content Planning
- To assist in the creation of communications and content plans to support the marketing team in the delivery of key Union marketing activity, such as Welcome Week and election.
- Populate the social media calendars to ensure regular, timely and impactful content across these channels on Instagram, TikTok and Threads.
- Build networks with student groups, the Union’s newspaper (Felix) and external partners to develop opportunities for content collaboration
- Utilise student feedback and engagement with Union content to continue to improve and develop our output and channels
- Work with the Officer Trustees to promote their public profiles and provide support on their campaigns.
- Stay up to date with what’s happening across the Union, College, the city and wider student movement to stay current and spot positive PR opportunities and content.
Content Creation & Curation
- Ensure timely, relevant and engaging content for Union channels & platforms, including blogs, website, social media and news
- Write, proof and edit a variety of digital communications across the organisation, such as blogs and web content to ensure brand and tone of voice is consistent and correct
- Lead on the weekly student newsletter – composing and drafting the newsletter and sending it out to all students every week
- Attend student events to capture photos and videos content to use for marketing purposes and provide live social media coverage to a high standard
- Be aware of shareable, engaging content, sourcing content from external channels to build an engaged following and boost our content on social media
- Establish and work with student and staff social ambassadors in gathering stories and content
General
- Monitor and moderate social posts and comments and respond or escalate in line with the Union’s Crisis Comms plan
- Support key events throughout the year, including Welcome Week and Elections, when necessary
- Proactively work to ensure the Union’s commitment to diversity and inclusion is expressed in all outputs

What we are looking for
- Experience of developing and delivering communications plans campaigns with clear metrics of success
- Solid knowledge of website analytics tools to help monitor and generate useful reports and insights
- Experience in managing content calendars
- Experience of, or strong understanding of, producing web content and an organisation’s social media presence
- Writing copy, editing, and proofreading for online media, demonstrating excellent attention to detail

1. Programme delivery - youth engagement

2. Programme delivery - digital content and campaigns

Delivery of our planned ‘Sexual health Q&As between young people & doctors’ campaign. This will include:

A series of video content, co-created with young people, for a social media campaign and series of associated website articles on the Fumble website.

3. Supporting our safeguarding

Supporting safeguarding at Fumble, as our Designated Safeguarding Officer. You’ll bring previous experience of effective safeguarding to help us build on our policy and practice.

This will include:

Conduct / manage annual safeguarding training for Fumble team & stakeholder groups

The Head of Marketing & Digital is responsible for the delivery of all AAM’s marketing and communications activity, including direct marketing of our own-promoted series in London and Cambridge, and is supported by a host of freelance professionals, including external PR from Artium Media Relations. The role holder is the guardian of AAM’s brand and its chief ‘voice’ in print, online and on social media, as well as through our ever-growing catalogue of recordings and digital content.
