Alongside is the new name for Julian House. We work with people experiencing social exclusion across the South and West of England.
About the role:
For someone who has spent years moving between the streets, temporary accommodation and services that have not worked for them, having a home of their own can be life changing. But getting the keys is only the beginning. As our Specialist Housing First Worker in Redbridge, you’ll provide the intensive, persistent and highly personalised support people need to make that home feel safe, sustainable and genuinely theirs.
Housing First does things differently. You’ll work alongside people who have experienced repeated homelessness and multiple disadvantage, including people who may be mistrustful of services or have found traditional approaches difficult to engage with. Rather than expecting people to change before they can access housing, you’ll start from the belief that everyone has a right to a home. You’ll build relationships over time, work creatively around barriers and use active engagement and harm reduction approaches to support people towards the goals that matter to them.
Your work will stretch across housing, health, benefits, safeguarding and wider support. You’ll help people prepare for and settle into their accommodation, navigate rent and benefits, manage risks and build greater independence within their community. Just as importantly, you’ll bring together the professionals around each person, advocate firmly when systems get in the way and keep looking for another route when the obvious one has failed. This is a role that calls for sound judgement, patience and real tenacity: knowing when to challenge, when to adapt and how to remain alongside someone through setbacks as well as progress.
You’ll be joining a team committed to delivering Housing First with integrity and giving practitioners the flexibility to respond to people as individuals. You’ll have opportunities to deepen your specialist knowledge, strengthen your partnership working and advocacy skills, and develop your practice through supervision, reflective learning and training.
About you:
- You have experience supporting people who have faced homelessness and multiple disadvantage, and understand how trauma, exclusion and repeated contact with services can affect trust and engagement.
- You understand the principles of Housing First and can translate them into flexible, strengths based and genuinely person led support.
- You’re persistent, creative and solutions focused, able to stay alongside people through setbacks and find different ways forward when traditional approaches have not worked.
- You can assess and manage risk confidently, respond calmly to difficult or rapidly changing situations and use sound professional judgement while keeping safeguarding central.
- You’re a strong advocate and relationship-builder, able to negotiate, challenge appropriately and bring housing providers, statutory services and community partners together around the person you’re supporting.
About us:
We’re London’s leading homelessness charity – and we get things done.
In a city where hundreds are forced into homelessness every day, our work has never been more needed or more challenging. And we’re not shying away. We’re rolling up our sleeves to make change and helping over 10,000 Londoners every year. We prevent homelessness, provide safe places to live and give people the opportunity to rebuild their lives and transform their futures. And we never give up.
We’re here for Londoners wherever they are on their journey. We start with trust, building relationships that help people feel safe, supported, and ready to move forward. Every day, we put people first in everything we do, challenging injustice and barriers that keep people from the safety, stability and opportunity they deserve. We stand alongside people as they rebuild and shape a future that feels their own.
Joining Single Homeless Project means joining a team that’s bold, compassionate and determined to do better for the people we support and for each other. You’ll work alongside colleagues with lived experience, in a space that’s trans-inclusive, disability-friendly, and actively striving to be anti-oppressive and equitable.
We’re not perfect, but we’re real. We listen. We learn. And we push forward, together. Because this isn’t just a job. It’s a chance to lead with empathy, spark change, and help build a London where no one is left behind.

Join a small charity where your ideas and fundraising work can make a visible difference.
We are looking for a Fundraising Officer with strong fundraising fundamentals, curiosity, creativity and a willingness to experiment. At a time when the charity sector and the wider world are changing quickly, we want someone who can look beyond familiar approaches, spot opportunities others might miss and turn new ideas into practical action.
ABOUT DISABILITY AFRICA
Disability Africa works in partnership with locally led organisations in The Gambia, Kenya, Uganda, Zambia and Eswatini. Together, we create opportunities for disabled children and young people to participate in community life on an equal basis, while working to change attitudes and challenge the exclusion they face.
At the heart of this work are community-based play hubs, led by our partners, where disabled children and young people play alongside their peers, build relationships and become more connected to their communities.
Our work is grounded in the Social Model of Disability. We focus on removing the social and attitudinal barriers that exclude disabled children and young people, and we reject pity-based approaches to fundraising and communication.
We are also conscious of the colonial power structures that continue to shape the international development sector. We work actively to challenge them by building long-term partnerships in which local organisations lead how our approach is shaped and put into practice in their own communities.
ABOUT THE ROLE
You will help generate the income that sustains and develops our work, joining a small, collaborative team and working closely with the Executive Director, colleagues and volunteers. The role offers considerable variety and the opportunity to develop your fundraising experience across several income streams.
You will research opportunities, prepare strong funding applications and donor reports, maintain our fundraising pipeline and CRM, and help build relationships with funders and supporters. You will also contribute to campaigns and help us explore new audiences and fundraising approaches.
WHAT YOU WILL DO
• Research funding opportunities across trusts and foundations, corporate partnerships, individual giving and other relevant sources.
• Prepare and submit clear, persuasive applications, proposals and funding requests.
• Maintain an accurate pipeline of prospective and existing funders and manage timely follow-up and repeat applications.
• Build positive relationships with donors, funders, corporate partners and prospective supporters.
• Produce clear donor reports that demonstrate impact and financial accountability.
• Maintain accurate information in our fundraising CRM and use data to help inform priorities.
• Contribute to fundraising campaigns, donor communications and materials in collaboration with colleagues and volunteers.
• Support the development and testing of new fundraising opportunities and approaches.
ABOUT YOU
You do not need to have worked across every area listed above. We are looking for someone with a sound grounding in fundraising, strong writing and research skills, and the confidence to develop relationships with different people and organisations.
• Experience of fundraising in a charity, non-profit or comparable organisation.
• Strong research, writing and proposal-development skills.
• The confidence to approach and build relationships with donors and prospective supporters.
• Good analytical and numerical skills, with confidence working with data and budgets.
• Experience using a CRM or donor database (we use Salesforce).
• Strong organisation and attention to detail, with the ability to manage several priorities.
• Curiosity, initiative and a willingness to test new ideas.
• Alignment with Disability Africa’s ethos and the Social Model of Disability, including our partnership-based approach, an awareness of the colonial dynamics that continue to shape the sector, and a rejection of pity-based charity narratives.
WHAT WE OFFER
• A four-day working week, with 28 hours worked from Monday to Thursday.
• A 12-month fixed-term contract, with the possibility of extension.
• Hybrid working, with two days per week in our Staines office, a three-minute walk from Staines station and less than 30 minutes by train from central London.
• Twenty working days of annual leave, equivalent to five full working weeks, plus the Christmas closure period.
• The opportunity to shape and develop fundraising work within a small organisation.
• A collaborative working environment with close contact across our UK team and African partners.
HOW TO APPLY
Please submit your CV and a supporting statement of no more than 750 words through CharityJob. Your statement should explain why you are interested in the role, what you believe you would bring to it, and, through relevant examples, how your experience meets the person specification.
Applications close at 11.59 pm on Monday 19 October 2026. First interviews are expected to take place on 26 or 27 October, with second interviews during the week beginning 2 November.
WHO WE ENCOURAGE TO APPLY
We want to hear from people who are excited by this role and share our values, including people who are often excluded from opportunities in the charity sector. We especially encourage applications from disabled people and from people with personal or professional connections to the countries where our partners work.
If there is anything we can change in the recruitment process to make it more accessible to you, please let us know.
We are sorry that we cannot offer visa sponsorship for this role: the terms of the role do not meet the current sponsorship requirements. Applicants will therefore need to already have the right to work in the UK.
We expect to receive many strong applications. And much like when applying to trusts, foundations or approaching corporate partners, finding a way to stand out among many good proposals is part of the job. So this is a great opportunity to show us how you would do that.
