Department background

The Debt Advice Team at Toynbee Hall provides crucial support to individuals and families struggling with financial burdens. Funded by the Money and Pensions Service (MaPS), this team delivers expert guidance and practical solutions to help clients manage and reduce their debt. 

Scope of Role

The Traineeship will last for 12 months. This role involves gaining practical experience by observing and participating in interviews to understand clients’ financial problems, researching options, and helping clients make informed decisions. The role includes structured classroom-based learning, supervised practice, and mandatory secondments across partner advice agencies in London.

Key Responsibilities

1. Accurate, Effective, and Individually Tailored Advice

Work under supervision to observe and learn how to provide effective debt advice, including interviewing clients, researching options, and empowering clients to make informed decisions. 

2. Detailed Case Records

Assist in maintaining detailed case records, ensuring all work meets auditing and quality standards, and meets funder requirements. 

3. Training and Development

Complete a structured training programme within the six-month period, covering technical debt advice, client management, and financial regulations. During the initial training period, trainees will be expected to attend intensive classroom-based training and supervised learning activities four to five days per week. Additional training will be based on shadowing, on-site learning, tests, external training courses, etc.

4. Teamwork

Be an active member of the team, identifying opportunities for your development and contributing to collective goals. 

5. Travel

Travel across London is required, including attendance at partner organisations, advice sites, and mandatory secondment placements across London boroughs.

Following the initial training period, the role will require a minimum of four days per week working from Toynbee Hall or partner office locations. One additional working day from home may be agreed where there is a suitable home-working environment and this aligns with operational requirements.

Person Specification

1. Experience and Skills

• Willingness to work towards obtaining an accredited qualification in debt advice.
• Basic IT and telephone skills, and ability to use an online-based Client Management System (CMS) to deliver advice across multiple channels and maintain case records.
• Ability to give and receive feedback objectively and sensitively.
• Ability to work as part of a team and be open to receiving feedback and learning from others.
• Ability to build and maintain positive relationships with all staff members.
• Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
• Competence in handling sensitive information with discretion and maintaining confidentiality.
• Ability to handle and support vulnerable clients with empathy and sensitivity, ensuring their needs are appropriately addressed.

Scripture Union is a national mission-movement, helping churches reveal Jesus to the next generation. We are looking for a Mission Enabler to offer direction and energy to the ministry of Scripture Union with a focus on initiating and maintaining missional opportunities in South Wales. You will be an enthusiastic candidate who will be able to recruit, train, coach and support many Volunteers and Faith Guides working together with them. You will also lead by example, through the modelling of excellent mission delivery to children and young people consistent with Scripture Union’s mission in supporting the pioneering of new mission.

· Be a strategic thinker and will have solid judgment of ministry impact.

· Have considerable insight into ministry with children and young people, be a passionate advocate, an excellent practitioner, and a capable communicator.

· Be able to visualise and work towards long-term goals.

· Be open to and comfortable with different traditions, styles and expression of spirituality, prayer, and worship, and has a growing familiarity with and understanding of the Bible. 

· Have a total commitment to God and is a Christian disciple.

· Be able to communicate effectively and speak the Welsh language (would be desirable).

About The Role
Dementia affects every community, and meaningful change happens when people feel connected to a cause and empowered to support it.
At Alzheimer’s Society, fundraising plays a vital role in making our work possible. From local community events to corporate partnerships and individual giving, every relationship helps us continue supporting people affected by dementia.
As Regional Fundraiser for Surrey, you will help build and strengthen those relationships. You will work across your local area to engage supporters, develop new opportunities and ensure people feel confident and valued in the difference they are making.
You will be part of a collaborative fundraising team, working closely with colleagues across the region. The role combines relationship building, planning and delivery, with a strong focus on community presence and long-term engagement.
What you’ll do
You will help grow sustainable fundraising across Surrey by building strong, trusted relationships and supporting people to get involved in ways that work for them.
Your work will include both proactive relationship building and ongoing stewardship. Some days will focus on meeting supporters and exploring new opportunities, while others will involve planning, coordination and reviewing progress with colleagues.
You will also play a visible role in your local area, representing Alzheimer’s Society at community events and helping people understand the impact of their support.
You can expect to:

- Develop and deliver fundraising activity across Surrey, working towards agreed income and engagement goals with support and guidance
- Build and maintain relationships with corporate partners, community groups and individual supporters, ensuring they feel valued and connected to impact
- Identify and develop new fundraising opportunities through networking, conversation and community engagement
- Create accessible and engaging ways for people to get involved in fundraising, adapting your approach to different audiences
- Work closely with colleagues and volunteers across teams to deliver joined up activity and shared goals
- Monitor activity and income performance, using insight to support planning and decision making
- Represent Alzheimer’s Society at events and in community settings, including occasional evenings and weekends

This role involves travel across Surrey and occasionally wider areas in the region. Some evening and weekend work will be required, usually linked to events and community activity, and this will be planned in advance wherever possible.

- Experience of building positive relationships with people, groups or organisations over time
- Confidence working with basic financial information such as targets or income, with support where needed

There will be one regular evening/ week and occasional other evenings and weekend working required.
