Operations Manager

About Our Client

Our client provides free, specialist emotional and practical support to people affected by fatal and life-changing road collisions across Bedfordshire, Cambridgeshire, and Hertfordshire. Each year, their small but dedicated team and cohort of over 70 trained volunteer Counsellors provide life-changing support to hundreds of individuals and families coping with grief, trauma, and loss.

Following a period of significant operational change, they are seeking a dynamic, highly organised Operations Manager to strengthen their internal systems, ensure compliance, and provide essential resilience to the organisation.

The Role

Reporting directly to the Chief Executive, you will play a key role in ensuring the smooth and efficient running of the organisation's day-to-day operations. You'll manage HR processes, oversee leave and TOIL systems, coordinate policy reviews, lead procurement (IT, insurance, mobile contracts, etc.), and support internal governance and compliance.

You'll also provide vital assistance across other functions, including non-clinical training coordination and event support for their growing fundraising activity. Working closely with the CEO, Clinical Lead, and admin team, you'll be central to embedding consistency, accountability, and efficiency across the charity.

About the role

The Interim Facilities Manager will ensure the safe, compliant and efficient running of the Cathedral’s estate, including the Cathedral Church, Visitor Centre and associated buildings. Leading a small team and external contractors, you will manage maintenance, safety, utilities, cleaning, and support for worship and events.

A key focus during this period will be embedding improved systems, compliance processes and reporting frameworks, ensuring effective contractor oversight and operational consistency across all sites.

Key responsibilities:

• Lead and improve FM operations, including planned and reactive maintenance.
• Oversee statutory compliance, fire safety, utilities, and contractor performance.
• Act as the Cathedral’s competent person for health, safety and compliance.
• Support worship, events and visitor activity to ensure safe, high-quality delivery.
• Embed systems, procedures and reporting frameworks to strengthen oversight.
• Line manage the Facilities Team, fostering collaboration and accountability.

The ideal candidate will have:

• Degree, HND or equivalent in Facilities Management or related discipline.
• IOSH or NEBOSH Health & Safety qualification (or higher).
• Significant FM experience in complex or publicly accessible environments.
• Strong knowledge of statutory compliance, CDM and contractor management.
• Membership of IWFM or IFMA.
• Proven ability to implement systems, improve performance and manage teams.

• Gather evidence via interviews, documentation and analysis - presenting findings clearly and accurately
• Partner HR, Managers, Legal, and Counter Fraud to ensure cases are handled consistently
• Advise leaders on outcomes and next steps - balancing legal compliance with a people - centric approach
• Maintain meticulous records, ensuring processes meet regulatory and bast-practice standards
• Attend Employment Tribunals as required
• Support the wider HR continuous improvement initiatives surrounding ER, training and culture

Person Specification:

• Proven experience in ER, with direct experience in investigations
• Strong knowledge of employment law and best practice ER processes
• First-class communication and interviewing skills
• Keen eye for detail, and strong data analysis skills
• A calm demeanour is essential for this role, as is the ability to handle sensitive and complex issues.

You will be experienced in taking full senior-management level responsibility for charity finances.  You will be supporting our Chief Executive in overseeing all financial activities for a charity with a turnover of £2 Million.  Reporting regularly to the board of trustees, you will be experienced in working with a fundraiser and managing multiple grant incomes.  Experience of working with local authorities is desirable. We are a small friendly and supportive team.  We are offering a flexible/hybrid working arrangement.
