We are delighted to have secured funding to deliver a 24-month befriending programme. This exciting opportunity will support the delivery of our ambitious five-year strategy by: 

• Promoting Independence - ensuring more older people can stay independent for longer 

• Providing Connection - enabling friendship and social connection for olderPeople 

The befriending service will be provided through 2 different strands which aim to support older people in different ways based on the needs identified via an assessment. 

Clients will enter the strand that is most appropriate to their needs.

• Strand A: We will offer a local face-to-face service of up to 1 hour for 26 weeks. Strand A provision would be appropriate for older people who have experienced a recent life event, such as a hospital admission, bereavement or home move and who need time limited support and guidance to connect with suitable services and activities.

• Strands B: We will offer ongoing support either face-to- face of up to 1hour or by telephone between 30 minutes and 1 hour. Strand B provision is for older people leaving Strand A that require long term support or for those who are identified as needing ongoing face-to-face or local telephone befriending support on entry to theprogramme. 

Purpose of Role 

• Arrange and carry out assessment for new service users within the befriending service using the Guided Conversation approach, in order to gather appropriate information about the older person, their needs, and what a befriender will be expected (and not expected) to do. 

• Ensure that the person wants a befriender, has given consent, confidentiality has been discussed, and the person is able and willing to join the service. 

• Ensure that volunteers and service users are well-matched and that the service runs safely, effectively, and in line with organisational standards. 

Key Tasks 

• Carry out a needs assessment for new service users referred to the befriending service. It could be a telephone-based discussion or review of a referral form or a home visit. 

• Gather key information such as visit preferences, activity interests, potential risks, and any unmet needs. 

• Complete assessment forms and input information into the online database 

• Refer service users to other services where appropriate 

• Match service users with suitable volunteer befrienders 

• Introduce befriender and service user, and carry out a 6-week review with both parties 

• Maintain accurate records and liaise with staff throughout the process

• You will be inducted in cohorts with other volunteers.

• Ongoing support including regular supervision by the Volunteer Manager. 

• Goup supervision with other volunteers. Groups supervision is a safe place where you can share experiences, challenges, and successes, process emotion and learn from each other.

• We ask that you complete training to support you in your role. This can be completed online if you have access to the internet and the necessary device (computer/laptop/tablet etc). Support can be offered or paper versions of much of the training if needed.

Volunteer Opportunities with Unique Support Hub: Asylum Support Team – Croydon & Crystal Palace Areas

Are you passionate about social justice, community engagement, and making a lasting difference in the lives of migrants and those seeking sanctuary?
We are seeking dedicated, compassionate, and experienced volunteers to join our Asylum Support Team in Croydon and Crystal Palace.

As part of this vital team, you will contribute directly to enhancing the wellbeing and experience of asylum seekers living in the community and those in Home Office accommodations. Your support will play a critical role in helping individuals navigate the complexities of the asylum process and build connections within their new communities.

Volunteer Roles Available

We are looking for individuals to take on a variety of essential roles, including:

• Community Activities Coordinator
  Organise and facilitate inclusive, engaging activities both within the reception centres and in the wider community to foster wellbeing, integration, and resilience.
• Advice & Advocacy Support Volunteer
  Provide one-to-one guidance on asylum procedures, support clients in understanding their rights and entitlements, and escalate cases where needed in collaboration with Migrant Help and AASC providers.
• Wraparound Services & Signposting Volunteer
  Assist asylum seekers in accessing crucial wraparound services including housing support, digital inclusion, mental health, education, and employment advice. 
  Provide effective referrals to legal aid solicitors and community organisations.

RSBC are looking for volunteers to help deliver our range of activities, visits and services to children and young people with visual impairments. 

The majority of activities are held at our Life Without Limits Centre by London Bridge. 

Role: Activities Volunteer

Commitment: Currently, sessions are run both during the week (mostly in the afternoon) and at weekends (usually on a Saturday). Activity volunteering is a flexible commitment, and you will be able to sign up for the session you like and when you have time. It really is up to you and your availability.

What will I be doing?

Our amazing Activity Volunteers play a key role in supporting blind children and young people to take part in a variety of activities. These range from sports, creative (singing, performing, art), audiobook club and day trips. Our activities are designed for blind young people to meet new friends, gain confidence, learn new skills/sports, and become more independent. The skills you have developed in your career and personal life will be invaluable to our young people. 

Key Tasks and Main Duties 

Face-to-face activities 

• 1:1 sighted guiding from and to public transport locations 

• practical support onsite 

• supporting the sessions 

• facilitate social interaction between the participants 

Who are you?

We welcome applications from people with a wide range of skills and experiences. You don’t need to have volunteered or worked before as full training will be provided. What’s important to us is that you are a team player, open to learning and willing to follow RSBC’s policies and can be an excellent ambassador for RSBC. We particularly welcome applications from people with lived experience of sight problems.

Our fundraising team leaders usually spend three to four hours per week in this role, which is flexible and can be shared by more than one volunteer if needed.

Are you passionate about working with children and looking for an opportunity to make a difference? We are recruiting for a volunteer to support with engaging and keeping children entertained while mums participate in our workshops and events. By providing this support, you will be allowing women to participate in events to develop their skills, confidence and build on their aspirations.

This role will be on an ad hoc basis and will require travelling to different places in London.

What you will be doing

• Maintain strict confidentiality
• Entertaining children with provided toys and small activities such as colouring or puzzles etc..
• Ensuring the children are kept safe

The skills you need

• Calm and patient approach
• Experience in childcare preferred
• Working knowledge of child safeguarding preferred
• Ability to provide a supportive, and inclusive atmosphere that encourages learning and participation
• Good communication skills
• Paediatric First Aider - Desired
