About the Role

This is a hands-on and rewarding role where you will lead the day-to-day delivery of major donor fundraising and help grow legacy giving. Working closely with the Development Director, senior leaders and trustees, you will oversee the major donor pipeline, build strong and meaningful relationships, and deliver personalised supporter experiences that inspire long term commitment.

You will line manage the Philanthropy Officer and work collaboratively with colleagues across the organisation to plan and deliver events, develop compelling donor communications and support data driven insight into supporter behaviour and opportunities.

Key responsibilities include:

• Managing and growing a portfolio of major donor prospects and supporters
• Developing tailored cultivation, solicitation and stewardship plans

About the Role

The role of Philanthropy Manager is to inspire and encourage philanthropic income from major individual donors to the University of York.  You will work to build engagement and involvement of potential major donors and colleagues across the University to develop and deliver a pipeline of significant philanthropic gifts to York Giving’s priority projects.

General Income Generation

Suffolk Wildlife Trust is looking for a suitably skilled & highly capable Senior Finance Officer. This is a pivotal position within a small, dedicated finance team, where you will support the effectiveness of day-to-day financial support and ensure that accurate, timely information is available to management. You’ll be responsible for recording financial data across a range of systems and processes, helping to provide a robust financial foundation for Suffolk Wildlife Trust.

A major focus of the role will be the accurate and efficient processing of all financial transactions. This includes the purchase and sales ledgers, carrying out bank reconciliations, managing credit control and supporting the approval of payment runs.

Your attention to detail and strong numeracy skills will be essential in maintaining the integrity of the Trust’s financial records and ensuring that everything ties up smoothly each month and at year end.

Alongside core finance work, you will support the Trust’s trading operations by managing the online shop, overseeing stock for both online and retail outlets and working with EPOS and ECWID systems. You’ll also provide finance support to the Consultancy Team and Café operations, helping these income-generating activities run smoothly and contribute to the Trust’s wider objectives.

Working closely with the Financial Controller, you will support key financial cycles including year-end and the annual audit for both the Trust and SWT Trading, as well as month-end processes, balance sheet reconciliations and management accounts. You’ll also assist with VAT returns, legacies, project reconciliations, restricted fund allocations, budgeting and ad hoc reporting, giving you a broad and varied workload.

The ideal candidate will have strong numeracy and Excel skills, previous experience in a similar finance role and either AAT qualified or qualified by equivalent experience. You’ll be organised, efficient, proactive and comfortable multi-tasking in a small team, with a willingness to learn and take a hands-on approach. Above all, you’ll be motivated by Suffolk Wildlife Trust’s mission and keen to use your finance skills to support nature’s recovery in Suffolk.

This is a permanent position working 30 hours per week over four days based at our main office Brooke House in Ashbocking. We operate flexible homeworking arrangements where colleagues spend more time working together than homeworking. The starting salary will be between £24,800 (FTE £31,000) and £26,400 (FTE £33,000) per annum depending on skills, knowledge and experience. Full time hours (37.5 over five days) would be considered for the right candidate.

As our next Chief Executive Officer, you will:

• Strategy & Impact: lead a collaborative listening phase and then develop and deliver a 3–5 year strategy and rolling business plan that defines the Centre’s core offer and impact targets.

• Governance & Finance: own the annual budget and medium-term financial modelling, deliver full-cost recovery across activity lines and present timely, accurate management information to trustees.

• Operational Leadership: ensure continuity of community services, venue trading and café operations and strengthen operational systems including safeguarding, H&S and business continuity.

• Income Generation: drive commercial performance of venue hire, events and catering, professionalise fundraising (major donors, legacies, corporate partnerships) and lead bids for multi-year statutory contracts.

• Community & Partnerships: sustain and deepen strategic relationships with Westminster City Council, commissioners, local partners and corporate supporters to secure commissioned work and philanthropic income.

• Estate Stewardship: manage day-to-day stewardship of the Centre’s significant ageing building, overseeing maintenance, lease/compliance obligations and contractor relationships.

• People & Culture: build a cohesive senior team, embed clear role accountabilities, performance management and development, and protect the Centre’s welcoming culture while managing change.

• Brand & Profile: act as a visible ambassador locally and with funders to raise the Centre’s profile and champion its social value.

Who you are:

• A seasoned senior leader with proven experience in a small/medium charity, community organisation or social enterprise that combines front-line delivery with significant premises/estate responsibility.

• Demonstrable track record of leading strategic development and delivering organisational growth while balancing hands-on operational leadership.

• Strong commercial and earned-income expertise, with experience of running successful commercial – ideally site-based - operations.

• Confident in winning and managing statutory contracts and multi-year grant programmes; credible with local authorities, commissioners and corporate partners.

• Financially literate with direct budget and cash-flow accountability and experience of full-cost recovery modelling.

• A collaborative, visible and warm ambassador who builds trust quickly, communicates clearly and can present concise management information to trustees.

Location Home-based in the South East of the UK, with regular travel across your region and occasional trips to the charity’s Head Office in Ashford, Kent

Salary £35,622 (rising to £36,035 after probation)

Role purpose

To generate sustainable income and grow our community of supporters through regional fundraising campaigns, community fundraising, local trusts and corporates, and regional membership recruitment. This role also supports project-specific giving, ensuring alignment with our priority impact areas, such as raising awareness, patient services and glaucoma research.

Key responsibilities

Fundraising & Income Generation

• Deliver regional fundraising appeals and campaigns aligned to local services.
• Develop and support community fundraising activities and events.
• Research and apply to relevant rusts and grant makers.
• Identify and engage regional corporate supporters.
• Create compelling sponsorship proposals and corporate packages.
• Lead on regional project-led fundraising tied to specific impact areas (e.g. our ‘Eye Health for All’ outreach programme, glaucoma research).

 Membership & Supporter Development

• Support regional membership recruitment.
• Help move individuals from initial contact through to deeper engagement and long-term membership of the charity.
• Promote opportunities for deeper supporter journeys including legacy giving.

 Stewardship & Supporter Care

• Follow up with community and regional supporters to thank and update them.
• Tailor recognition to reflect local efforts and giving.
• Share stories of impact from regional initiatives.
• Identify supporters for deeper conversations (major giving, legacies, etc.).

Marketing & Communications

• Provide regional case studies, stories, and testimonials.
• Support regional visibility through PR opportunities and storytelling.
• Work with the Communications team to develop tailored regional materials to support campaigns and stewardship.

 Collaboration with Support Services Team

• Collaborate closely with our local outreach teams to ensure relevance of fundraising activities:
  • Identify potential projects and fundraising needs.
  • Share local insight and opportunities.
  • Provide updates and feedback from supporters.
  • Build your knowledge of local projects and services that could inspire donations

 Supporter Journey Stages You Will Support

• Awareness & Introduction – Inspire new supporters through local presence.
• First Gift / Contact – Encourage entry-level giving and membership.

Person specification

Skills and Experience Required

Essential

• Proven experience in fundraising (community, trusts, corporates or individual giving).
• Strong relationship-building skills across a wide range of audiences.
• Ability to write compelling fundraising proposals and stories.
• Confident in working independently and collaboratively.
• Good project management and organisational skills.
• Strong communication skills – verbal, written and interpersonal.

Desirable

• Knowledge of the charity sector and supporter journeys.
• Experience of working with membership or volunteer-based organisations.
• Experience using CRM systems (we use Raisers Edge NXT).
