Legacies form a key source of income for the British Heart Foundation (BHF), raising approximately £100m a year for our life‑saving research.
As a Legacy Manager, you will manage, protect, and optimise this income. You'll work alongside three other Legacy Managers, supporting the Head of Legacy Management to build on the team’s successes and to optimise the BHF’s income from gifts in Wills.
Joining a thriving team, you’ll undertake a variety of work, including managing casework in accordance with the law, best practice, and BHF’s processes and procedures, collaborating with internal and external stakeholders, providing technical guidance to colleagues and potential legacy givers, and line managing two Assistant Legacy Officers and our Legacy Administrator.
This role may also require deputising for the Head of Legacy Management.
About you
You'll either have extensive experience in legacy management within the charities legacy sector; or be a Qualified Private Client Solicitor; or be a Qualified member of the Society of Trust and Estates Practitioners; or be a Qualified Chartered Legal Executive with experience of Wills and Probate.
With high levels of empathy and belief in the BHF’s work, you'll be able to develop strong relationships with colleagues and contacts. With previous line management experience, you'll demonstrate first‑class leadership skills, supported by a compelling vision and the ability to inspire others, motivate, and develop a team of staff.
A self‑starter with excellent communication and strong interpersonal skills, you'll bring proven experience of working within private client / legacy management.
With high levels of financial numeracy, previous experience in a fast‑paced environment, and excellent IT skills, you’ll also have exceptional attention to detail, strong time‑management abilities, and the capability to prioritise workload and deliver to deadlines.
Working arrangements
This is a 12-month fixed term contract covering family leave. We are looking for someone to work 32 hours per week, flexibility around this working pattern or the 32 hours can be discussed.
This is a hybrid role, where your work will be split between your home and at least one day per week, on average, in our London Office. This may vary from time to time, so you will need to work in a flexible way to unlock your best work for our cause.

The Role:
Our client is looking to appoint a Regular Giving and Legacy Giving Manager to oversee a sector-leading, multi-channel appeal programme to increase numbers of gifts and donors to the University. Following the launch of this leading universities bold and ambitious strategy they are preparing to launch a comprehensive fundraising campaign. The Regular Giving and Legacy Giving team will play a pivotal role in bringing about a step-change in regular, mid-value and legacy donations to the University.
You will oversee and implement the overall strategy and supporter journey for alumni and donors primarily through direct mail, telephone, email and social media.
After an internal promotion, an exciting role has arisen with opportunities for the postholder to oversee an award-winning acquisition campaign, a brand-new mid-value programme and a successful legacy marketing programme. You will be instrumental in building collaboration with the Alumni Engagement team to promote philanthropy and take alumni on a journey to their first gift.
This position is based in West London (Central Line) offering a hybrid working pattern of mostly 2 days a week which are Tuesdays and Thursdays, with some requirements to come in 3 days per week when needed.
What you would be doing:
Working across the Regular Giving & Legacy Giving team, you will oversee supporter journeys for donors, working on cases for support, appeal development and data segmentation. You will have the opportunity to pilot new ideas as well as delivering a mature and sector-leading programme.
Working across Advancement, you will build relationships with key internal stakeholders especially the Alumni Engagement team, Major Gift, and Event teams to capitalise on opportunities to embed regular giving and legacy messaging in all University activities.
What we are looking for:
- Successful track record, in direct-marketing fundraising in Higher Education or the charity sector
- Proven track record of line management and professionally developing members of staff
- Ability to build strong relationships and collaboration among key stakeholders and teams
- Significant and demonstrable experience of managing and organising projects to agreed budgets, targets and timescales
- Significant and demonstrable experience of developing and evaluating compelling and response driven copy and creative
- Significant and demonstrable experience of interrogating, analysing, manipulating and interpreting large, complex data sets for targeting and segmentation purposes

Key Responsibilities:
- Use Salesforce (or similar CRM) to maintain and keep up to date all information and projects related to In Memory Giving and drawing on data insights, monitor performance, identify trends, opportunities for developments and support improvements to the care and long-term relationship with supporters.
- Use the Much Loved (or similar platform) to develop tributes and opportunities for further in memory dedications, event participation and increase financial donations.
- Establish a communication process with funeral directors and keeping these records up to date on Salesforce.
- Much Loved to promote income generation keeping them as donors, repeating donations and taking part in events and dedications
- Ensure that all communications, across all mediums, reflect the values of the Fishermen’s Mission and our Christian ethos.
- Working closely with the Digital Engagement Officer and the Digital Fundraising Officer to develop and promote In Memory Giving and storytelling via digital platforms
- Work with the wider organisation including frontline staff to raise the profile of In Memory Giving (internally and externally) and providing information using both written and printed word to assist with conversations with clients and supporters.
- Provide reports and information as and when required by line manager.
- Meet all targets and objectives as agreed with the line manager on an annual basis.
- Undertake training and networking opportunities, when and if required, to keep up to date with the wider charity sector.
- Work as part of the Business Development Team at all times, taking part in team events and projects and supporting other team members if required.

The Role
Joining a team of six, reporting into the Head Of Events and Supporter Engagement and managing the supporter engagegment officer. You will:

The Candidate
Proven experience in legacy giving and individual giving environments.
Ability to analyse and report on marketing effectiveness, sharing insights with teams.
Experience in managing finance and budgeting for fundraising activities.
Demonstrable ability to write engaging copy for different audiences across varied communication channels.
Ideally previous line management experience.
