The Chair of Trustees will:

• Provide leadership and direction to the Board of Trustees and enable the Board to fulfil its responsibilities for the overall governance and strategic direction of the organisation.

• Ensure that the organisation pursues its objects as defined in its governing document, charity law, company law and other relevant legislation/regulations.

• Work in partnership with the Director to support employees and volunteers, helping them achieve the aims of the organisation; and to optimise the relationship between the Board of Trustees and the staff.

• Facilitate the Board of Trustees in stimulating excellent, well-rounded and carefully considered strategic decision-making.

Main Responsibilities of the Chair

The Chair of Trustees will be expected to:

In relation to the Board of Trustees

• Formulate strategic plans and regular review of long-term strategic aims of the charity.

• Develop organisational policies, define goals, targets and evaluate performance against agreed targets.

• Approve the annual cycle of the board meetings, meeting agendas, chair and facilitate meetings, monitor decisions taken at meetings and ensure they are implemented.

• Liaise regularly with the Treasurer to maintain a clear grasp of the charity’s financial position and to ensure full and timely financial transparency and information disclosure to the Board.

• Lead and mentor other Board members to fulfil their responsibilities and enable access to training/coaching/information to enhance the overall contribution of the board.

• Annually review the Board structure, role, staff relationships and ensure implementation of agreed changes/developments are carried out.

• Encourage team working among Board members and encourage them to identify and recruit new trustees as required.

• Create a strong, profitable and fulfilling working relationship with trustees and the Director through review and self-reflective evaluation of contributions and effectiveness of the board.

In relation to the Director 

• Assume guardianship of the legal and financial integrity of the organisation.

• Consult with the Director on matters of strategy, governance, finance and HR.

• Oversee the Director’s activities in the context of the implementation of the Board’s strategy and policies.

• Maintain careful oversight of any risk to reputation and/or financial standing of the organisation.

• Receive regular informal progress reports of the organisation’s work and financial performance through the Director.

In relation to the community and code of conduct

• Represent the organisation as a spokesperson at appropriate events, meetings or functions.

• Lead the Board in fostering relations with potential clients and potential funders/donors.

• Act as final stage adjudicator for disciplinary and grievance procedures if required.

• Facilitate change and address conflict within the Board of Trustees, within the organisation and liaise with the Director to achieve this.

• Undertake review of external complaints as defined by the organisation’s complaints procedure.

• Ensure adherence and compliance around key policies to e.g. Hiring Policy,Health & Safety and in all decisions and discussions of the Board and its sub-committees.

• Attend and be a member of other committees or working groups when appropriate in role as Chair.

• In order to perform the above role, the Chair should have reasonable access to all staff and information, in line with the board’s fiduciary duties.

In relation to Child Protection

• Uphold the charity’s Child Protection Policy, and ensure its rigid application to all of the Board’s duties and endeavours. 

• Place child safety at the forefront of all deliberations, and adopt a diligent awareness of any area in which child safety might be at risk.

• Report any and all potential violations of the charity’s Child Protection Policy to the Board of Trustees immediately. 

Qualities of a Chair

The Chair of Trustees is expected to demonstrate the following qualities:

Essential

• Understanding and acceptance of the legal duties, responsibilities and liabilities of Trusteeship and adhering to Nolan’s seven principles of public life: selflessness, integrity, objectivity, accountability, openness, honesty and leadership.

• Commitment to the charity’s objects, aims and values and willingness to devote time to carry out responsibilities.

• Strategic and forward looking vision in relation to the charity’s objects and aims.

• Good, independent judgement, political impartiality and the ability to think creatively in the context of the organisation and external environment.

• Good communication and interpersonal skills and the ability to respect the confidences of colleagues.

• Balancing tact and diplomacy with willingness to challenge and constructively criticise.

Desirable 

• Prior experience of committee/trustee work.

• Knowledge of the type of work undertaken by the organisation - disability care and poverty alleviation.

• A wider involvement with the voluntary sector.

• Experience of chairing meetings, committee work, some experience of charity finance, charity fundraising.

• Leadership skills exercised through a period change.

Time Commitment

• The Board meets at least 4 times a year and the Chair is expected to be available 4 times in a year.

• In addition to Board Meetings, other contact – usually electronic or by telephone – will be necessary.

Treasurer for Age Concern Twyford & District

Do you have an interest in helping our charity that supports older people in our community?

If you have a head for financial matters, you could add to and assist our trustees’ management of our finances.                      

Initially set up in 1988, we are an independent local charity (Charitable Incorporated Organisation No. 11163722) that promotes and maintains independent living for older residents in and around our local community. We are not affiliated with any similar organisations, but work closely with other Wokingham Borough-based charities and support organisations.

We provide a Day Centre with activities, lunches and optional take-home meals, activities including arts, singing and dancing, plus a range of support services including assistance with form-filling, handypersons and a listening ear to support families.

In 2024/25, our income was £250k, a small rise on previous years, and our services and facilities remain well-used and very well-appreciated in our community.

The Role

We are a small and collaborative trustee team, working closely with the staff in the centre to provide a service to our local community. Our Board includes some people with experience and skills in the services we provide to older people or other professions, and we’d expect trustees to have empathy with our cause and our beneficiaries. 

Although we’d welcome your financial qualification, that’s not a requirement, as our finances aren’t complex. An understanding of how charity finance works would be beneficial of course, with the ability to communicate financial information clearly, especially to other trustees, being important. Support from our employees is always available, as they will be dealing with the day-to-day finances.

You don’t necessarily need prior experience of charity trusteeship, as advice from local charity-support organisations is always available. Full induction to our organisation will be provided, plus specialist help as a new trustee, including access to external training.

​We are a charity not a commercial business, but we apply business principles to governing our organisation. We are looking for fresh expertise and experience from a variety of backgrounds to our charity. We want to expand the diversity of our Board and strongly welcome applications from people from less-represented groups. 

​The focus of a trustee role is strategic, and trustees will not be expected to get involved in the organisation’s operations on a day-to-day basis; however, contact and liaison with other trustees and employees is expected.   

​We ask for about five hours per month, which includes all meetings, discussions, etc., although that time commitment will rise at year-end and for our AGM.
You will need access to digital communications, as some our charity’s business is run that way.

We’re looking for a Treasurer to provide financial leadership to our charity that supports the VCSE (Voluntary, Community and Social Enterprise) sector in Wakefield District through high-impact contracts and grant making.

Nova is a charity that works with charities, community groups and social enterprises to help them thrive and continue their important work across the District. We do this by:

• Providing free specialist support on development and growth
• Ensuring the VCSE sector has a voice in decision-making
• Securing resources and funding for the VCSE sector

We have several opportunities open to join our Board of Trustees, including a Treasurer.

The Treasurer works closely with the Board, CEO, Finance Manager, and accountant to ensure our organisation’s finances are well-managed, transparent, and aligned with strategic goals. This involves:

• Guiding financial decisions
• Helping the Board understand and act on financial information
• Contributing to planning for the future, including budgets, reserves and exploring new incomes streams and enterprising approaches to strengthen Nova’s financial resilience

While previous experience as a Treasurer or Trustee is welcomed, it’s not essential. What matters most is commitment to Nova’s values, financial integrity, and supporting the VCSE sector.

About REMIX

REMIX is a start‑up, youth‑led social mobility charity transforming young lives across London. Based in Shoreditch, we empower young people from disadvantaged backgrounds to unlock their potential, build confidence, and develop essential life skills through nurturing mentorship, inspiring role models, and transformative opportunities.

The Role

We are seeking a dynamic, compassionate, and forward‑thinking Chair of the Board of Trustees to guide REMIX through its formative years. As a start‑up charity, we are building our governance, culture, systems, and long‑term strategy — and your leadership will be central to this journey.

We are seeking to appoint a voluntary Trustee for our charity who will also take up the role of Company Secretary.

As Company Secretary, you will:

• Liaise with and support the chair and other trustees in organising meetings and taking minutes.
• Ensure the trustees are aware of their legal and regulatory responsibilities.
• Maintain the register of members, trustees, directors, and secretaries.
• Prepare and file annual returns and other statutory documents with Companies House and the charity regulator.
• Help us maintain compliance with charity regulations and governance standards.

About Maidstone Homeless Care:

Maidstone Homeless Care is a well-established charity supporting homeless and vulnerable people in the Maidstone area . We run an active day centre, busy food bank and a small residential unit supporting homeless people. 

We have one formal evening meeting each month . The role of trustee is a voluntary role and consistent support is available from the trustee group as well as appropriate training.

Shortlisted candidates will then be invited to observe a Board meeting before deciding whether they wish to formally join as a Trustee.

What will you be doing?

The role of the Chair is to provide leadership and direction to the Board of Trustees, enabling the board to fulfil their responsibilities for the overall governance and strategic direction of the organisation. The Chair will hold the Board and Executive Team to account for the Charity's mission and vision, providing inclusive leadership to the Board of Trustees, ensuring that each trustee fulfils their duties and responsibilities for the effective governance of the charity.

As Chair, you will help guide the organisation's strategic direction, support the Chief Executive and Board, and ensure Women's Aid in Luton remains resilient, sustainable, and true to its values. You will play a key role in shaping the charity's future and championing its work within the local community.

The Chair will work in partnership with the Board of Management, supporting them to achieve their vision for the organisation. This includes chairing meetings of the Board of Trustees effectively and efficiently, bringing impartiality and objectivity to the decision-making process, and ensuring Trustees are fully engaged and that decisions are taken in the best, long-term interests of the Charity.

You will establish and build a strong, effective and constructive working relationship with the Chief Executive, ensuring she is held to account for achieving agreed strategic objectives while supporting her and respecting the boundaries which exist between the two roles.

The Chair will act as an ambassador and the public face of the charity in partnership with the Chief Executive, representing the charity at external functions, meetings and events. You will help facilitate change and address any potential conflict with external stakeholders.

Demand for our services continues to grow, while the wider context for charities and particularly those supporting vulnerable women and children, remains challenging. Strong, thoughtful governance is therefore more important than ever. The Board plays a vital role in providing strategic leadership, supporting the staff and volunteers, and ensuring that Women's Aid Luton remains sustainable, resilient, and true to its mission.

What are we looking for?

EXPERIENCE

• An understanding and passion for the Violence Against Women and Girls Sector
• Experience of operating at a senior strategic leadership level
• An understanding of UK charity governance and working with or as part of a Board of Trustees
• An ability to network with both internal and external stakeholders
• Sensitivity and discretion in dealing with staff and service user issues
• Significant experience and success in leading groups of people in either a professional or voluntary capacity to achieve results.
• Experience of chairing meetings.
• Significant experience of managing, motivating, and developing people.
• Strong experience of developing, deploying, and evaluating strategic plans with a view to maximising impact and benefit.
• Experience of financial management and a broad understanding of charity finance issues

• Exceptional leadership skills; able to cultivate effective collaboration but also comfortable in taking responsibility for difficult choices.
• Effective strategic communicator: able to articulate Women’s Aid Luton’s vision and engage and inspire others both within the organisation and externally.

• Sound judgement with high capacity for self-reflection.
• Capacity to support both Board and Executive development.
• An ability to work within the realistic expectations and limitations for the Charity
