There are always jobs to be done to care for the Museum – replacing light-bulbs, deep cleaning, oiling locks, and painting – helping to improve the visitor experience and protect the artefacts. We rely on our maintenance team to build and create displays, and to maintain, restore and repair our collection. Whether you are a skilled craftsperson, or good at DIY, we have a project for you to help.

This back of house role is for you if you are a hands-on team player, have some experience or interest in a craft/trade and are physically fit.

Purpose of Role

Under the direction of the Maintenance Team Leader, there are several tasks that are carried out:

About The Role

An exciting opportunity to volunteer with the team at the Conservation Breeding Unit (CBU) at Slimbridge has arisen. As a CBU horticulture and maintenance volunteer, you will play a vital role in assisting the Conservation Breeding Team to uphold the highest standards of care and welfare. You'll achieve this by maintaining and constructing facilities and aviaries at CBU and carrying out various horticultural roles such as grass mowing, weeding and 'planting up' aviaries for a collection of birds that are vital to ongoing conservation efforts. 

This role is ideal if you are interested in learning how things work 'behind the scenes' at an organisation that prides itself on carrying out effective and successful wetland conservation. You will have the opportunity to develop your horticultural and DIY skills. You will also learn from a team of dedicated conservation aviculturists who are happy to share their knowledge and enthusiasm, making this an ideal stepping-stone for those who are looking to enter the world of practical conservation work but require more experience to get their foot in the door.

General notes:

Road: Slimbridge Wetland Centre is 2 miles off the A38. There is a large car park with ample car parking spaces and there is a bike rack available for staff volunteers. Rail: Cam & Dursley rail station is a 3.5 mile cycle or taxi ride away. Bus: Unfortunately, there is no bus service directly to Slimbridge: the nearest services stop is at the A38, 2 miles walk from the Centre.

Volunteers are integral to the running of our Washington Wetland Centre. By working as part of the Maintenance team, you will help us ensure the Centre is looking at its very best and looking spick and span by keeping the facilities in excellent condition, so we can continue to provide our visitors with a great day out and showcase our work to save wetlands for wildlife and people. 

You will mainly be volunteering to assist with painting and decorating around the Centre and the occasional work in up keeping other buildings / hides as required. Tasks may include the following: 

• Preparation and painting / varnishing of wooden door frames, doors, tables and windows.
• Preparation and painting of buildings (internal and external), structures and other areas
• Occasional sanding down and repainting of benches
• Painting and treating of fences
• Sanding and painting metal work

Carrying out basic checks and cleaning our small fleet of vehicles ready for our staff to use. Puppy Support Volunteers support our Puppy Training Regions, to provide short term care and holiday cover for puppies/dogs from 8 weeks onwards. This ranges from a day cover to a few weeks care, maintaining the basic care and individual exercise requirements of the puppy as well as helping them to adapt to living with different carers and routines. To maintain basic training according to Canine Partners’ methods and continue behaviour plans for their development age, such as toilet training and loose lead walking, both in the home and in residential areas.

What we require from you

• The primary puppy volunteer must be 18 years of age or over.
• You will need to reside in a house/bungalow/ground floor flat with a dog friendly secure garden (non-shared). Please note that we are unable to accept a townhouse for puppies under the age of 6 months due to health and safety risks to the volunteer and puppy.
• If you are a dog owner with no more than two pet dogs of suitable temperament, as assessed during the home check, you are welcome to apply.  They must be over 18 months of age and have lived within the home for at least six months.
• Commit to attend regular group classes even when without a dog (once a month) to maintain knowledge and application of the training expected when the dogs are with you.
• Practical and physical role with the ability to recognise your own limitations.’  For example, lifting and carrying a 12kg puppy
• Settling the puppy/dog into a new home requires time and patience. It can take a while for them to feel completely relaxed. Settling in period will be different with each puppy/dog.
• Keep in touch with your staff point of contact with regular updates
• Access to own transport to travel to vet appointments and meet your trainer, as required
• Understand that the dog in your care remains under the ownership of Canine Partners, and as such advice from canine Partners representatives should be followed.

Support and Training

• Induction process which includes submitting of an information form, telephone interview, home visit, training, and handling sessions
• Each volunteer is allocated a Canine Partners Puppy Training Coordinator as their first point of contact.
• Receive regular training, resources, and other essential information via your Puppy Training Coordinator, this may be in the format of verbal instructions, physical copies, digital instructions, video, and webinar resources or in person.
• No previous dog ownership experience is needed but you must meet the criteria listed above to be considered.
• Holiday cover and appointments cover can be arranged.
