Overview

We are seeking a highly skilled and motivated Finance Manager to join our team. You will be responsible for overseeing financial operations, ensuring compliance with financial regulations, and providing strategic financial guidance to support the Human Relief Foundation’s goals. This role requires strong leadership abilities and a comprehensive understanding of financial management principles.

Person Specification

• Must hold a professional accountancy qualification: ACCA, CIMA, ACA or CIPFA.

Responsibilities:

• Acting as point of contact and spokesperson for all financial aspects of the charity and a trading subsidiary company;

• Providing complete and parallel financial accounting services to the charity and it’s trading subsidiary arm, maintaining proper records of all financial activities, and reconciling any inter-company issues between the charity and it’s trading arm;

• Implementation & administration of a Pension Plan for both the charity and the subsidiary as and when required;

• Providing financial expertise, leadership and high quality support to the management team in the UK and our international offices;

• Dealing with all queries and compliance issues relating to HMRC, Charity Commission and the Office of the Scottish Charity Regulator;

• Preparing quarterly reports for management and trustees and presenting these to management or the board of trustees;

• To ensure the provision of accurate and timely financial information including budgets and forecasts;

• Maintain income sheets of revenue including standing orders and any other monthly revenue such as grants or other payments;

• Integrating Sage, QuickBooks with existing internal charity databases.

Maintaining separate records and reconciliations for

• Restricted or ring fenced donations or grants for specific projects;

• Funds raised through specific fundraising events or for specific projects (including setting up and managing separate budgets and expense controls for each).

Managing and administering

• All day to day incoming & outgoing amounts, banking and cash flow handling and settling all approved invoices and expense claims;

• Payroll for the Charity office staff and the Charity shop employees through the subsidiary;

• Outgoing payments for the UK offices and making International payments;

• Receipt of payments and making payments, in the UK and for projects Internationally in the field whilst maintaining separate budgets and records and liaising where necessary with International Programmes Department and other relevant departments;

• You will be responsible for the management and development of the small team of finance staff in the UK and internationally. Completion of all relevant quarterly, annual and other statutory compliance requirements for both the charity and its subsidiary, including

• Preparation and submission of quarterly Gift Aid returns and quarterly VAT returns to HMRC;

• Preparation of annual end of year accounts, filings and documentation for annual audits;

• Filing all relevant records with HMRC, Inland Revenue, Charity Commission, and Office of the Scottish Charity Regulator;

• Maintaining all relevant records and implementing changes to existing handling of records as required for compliance purposes.

• Previous Executive Level PA experience or hands-on administrative experience
• Experienced, self-motivated, enthusiastic and dedicated, with initiative and the ability to work as part of a small administrative team
• Reliable and responsible
• Excellent attention to detail where accuracy is essential
• Excellent IT skills with extensive experience of Zoom, Teams and Microsoft Office including MS Excel – ability to use spreadsheets, input basic formulae and remove duplications. Experience of Donorfy is a bonus.

Following an organisational review, EMMS is creating a new Director of Fundraising role, separating fundraising and communications into two Director posts. EMMS is financially stable with healthy reserves, currently raising around £400,000 per year in fundraised income, plus a significant time-limited major donor gift ending in 2028.

The Director of Fundraising will:

• Lead the development of a diverse, sustainable fundraising strategy across multiple income streams (trusts and foundations, major donors, individual giving, community, corporates, legacies).

• Be hands-on in delivering this strategy, supported by an experienced Head of Partnerships and Philanthropy and a Stewardship Manager.

• Manage and grow relationships with donors and stakeholders, meeting ambitious income targets.

• Oversee budgets, forecasting and reporting, and contribute to organisational strategic and business planning.

• Line manage fundraising staff, setting objectives/KPIs and supporting their development.

• Sit on the Executive Leadership Team and play a proactive role in the wider management and development of the charity, including reporting to the CEO and attending some Board meetings.

What they’re looking for:
An experienced senior fundraiser with a strong track record of strategic income growth across multiple channels, excellent relationship-building skills, strong leadership and team management experience, and knowledge of the Scottish charity and fundraising landscape. You should be confident operating strategically and operationally, familiar with fundraising regulation and good practice, and able to communicate effectively with both Christian and secular audiences in line with EMMS’ faith-based heritage and health mission. Degree-level education or equivalent experience is required; membership of the Chartered Institute of Fundraising (or willingness to join) is expected.

Terms and benefits:

• Salary: £63,313 – £70,347 (depending on experience) with annual inflationary rise

The Job

As Financial Accountant, you'll lead a small team and report to the Head of Financial Accounting. You'll be responsible for producing accurate financial statements, managing audit deliverables, ensuring compliance with charity and company law, and driving improvements in financial processes and reporting. This is a hands-on technical role with leadership responsibilities, requiring collaboration across finance, systems, and planning teams to deliver a seamless finance function.

Key responsibilities include:
- Preparing statutory accounts and technical accounting adjustments

The Person

You'll be a qualified accountant with strong technical expertise in SORP/FRS102 and experience in a large, complex organisation. You'll bring a track record of producing high-quality financial reports, managing audits, and improving performance through data and collaboration. Open to candidates coming straight from practice, especially those who have previously laised with charities.
