About the role

The British Museum is seeking a Management Accountant to deliver high-quality financial insight, support strategic decision-making, and help ensure the responsible stewardship of its funds.

This is a unique opportunity to join a leading museum, contributing to the financial sustainability of an organisation that preserves, celebrates, and shares cultural heritage with diverse audiences.

As a key member of the Finance team, you will provide a first-class management accounting service, working closely with departments such as Estates and Capital Projects, Information Services, Visitor Services and Security to support budgeting, reporting, and financial planning. You will be picking up a varied portfolio with supportive and engages budget managers.

About you

We're looking for someone who combines technical expertise with a collaborative, mission-driven mindset. The successful candidate should be able to evidence:

• ACA (or equivalent) qualified.
• Strong technical knowledge of relevant accounting standards, income tax, NI, VAT, and regulatory frameworks.
• Advanced Microsoft Excel and financial systems skills, ideally with experience using Unit4ERP and/or Business Central.
• Excellent communication skills, with the ability to explain financial information to non-specialists.
• Highly organised, with the ability to manage competing priorities.
• Strong attention to detail and problem-solving skills.
• Proactive, collaborative, and confident in influencing stakeholders.
• Experience of working in a Non-Department Public Body or the charitable sector and an interest in the arts, heritage or other relevant sectors is advantageous.

Key areas of responsibility

Financial Management and Reporting:

• Prepare timely and accurate management accounts, forecasts, and reports.
• Support the budgeting process across multiple departments.
• Produce quarterly forecasts and financial analysis to inform decision-making.
• Contribute to year-end accounts and consolidated financial statements, liaising with auditors.
• Ensure compliance with charity regulations, donor restrictions, and public sector requirements.

Business Partnering and Stakeholder Engagement:

• Act as a finance representative, supporting and advising non-finance colleagues.
• Build strong relationships across departments, supporting financial understanding and accountability.

Projects and Strategic Support:

• Analyse income streams and expenditure to improve efficiency and sustainability.
• Support business cases, funding applications, and grant reporting.

Reporting to the Head of Finance, and supporting our small talented highly talented Team your key tasks will be to:

· assist staff managing project finances ;

·       support the development of donor project budgets;

·       take a principlal role in supporting financial compliance;

·       support IM to fulfil its accountability to funders

You will be a fully qualified accountant with at least 4 years’ progressive experience working on charity financial management including budget compilation, donor reports and grant management. With excellent MS Excel skills and experience of Sage 50 and ExpenseIn or similar systems, you will have outstanding attention to detail and excellent oral and written English communication skills.

We don't just want a dyed in the wool accountant, we also want someone with great interpersonal skills. A problem solver with a GSOH who thrives in a small, fast-paced high-calibre international team where everyone pitches in. A demonstrable interest in international relations and peacemaking and / or experience of working in a conflict zone and additional languages would be highly desirable.

Reporting to the FP&A Manager, you will be responsible for the production of monthly management accounts and business partnering with various departments, providing crucial insight and analysis. Anticipated duration is 3 months. Working arrangement: hybrid working, 3 days per week in the office. To start ASAP.
