We are looking for an experienced and dedicated Payroll Manager to join an established Finance team to lead the payroll function. 

Reporting to the Management Accountant, the Payroll Manager will play a crucial role in supporting our employees through the timely and accurate processing of all associated payrolls and dealing with employee queries on an ad hoc basis. The Payroll Manager will be a key link between our regional and central managers and our finance team, and central to fostering a culture of trust and fairness across the organisation.

The successful candidate will have excellent interpersonal and technical skills, with a high attention to detail and capable of working independently to deadlines

Whether assisting students and residents on a daily basis, supporting weekend residentials, conferences and events, or working with the team which delivers our annual Foundation Celebration, this role is at the heart of providing a welcoming campus environment.

The Campus Accommodation and Hospitality Manager will lead a team of reception and housekeeping staff to deliver and administer a full range of campus services. As well as providing an efficient and welcoming reception service, this includes the management of meeting rooms, accommodation booking, achieving and maintaining high standards of housekeeping, and overseeing contracted catering and refreshment services. The postholder will be part of a committed staff team, giving and receiving support to deliver the operational needs of the Foundation in a way which reflects our ethos of hospitality, care and community. 

This is a full-time role, with some evening and weekend work during weekend residentials and other events. The postholder will also participate in an out-of-hours on-call rota.

Key responsibilities

1. To manage the delivery of accommodation and hospitality operations.

• Foster a welcoming and inclusive atmosphere for students, staff, and visitors from diverse backgrounds and denominations.
• Oversee the day-to-day running of hospitality services including accommodation, catering and menus, and support for conferences and events.
• Represent the staff team on hospitality matters at the Foundation’s residents’ and community forum meetings
• Maintain high standards of cleanliness, presentation, and service across all facilities
• Liaise with Facilities Manager regarding maintenance needs arising in meeting rooms and accommodation 

2. To manage a team of hospitality staff.

• Draw up duty rotas for the Hospitality team based on varying operational need.
• Provide ongoing support, training, and development for team members.
• Carry out line management responsibilities in line with the Foundation’s HR policies and procedures

3. To manage the delivery of events and conferences.

• Generate quotes for events and conferences in consultation with internal and external organisers
• Support marketing for events, conferences, and other campus activities
• Oversee the Hospitality team to ensure effective administration for the smooth delivery of hospitality for teaching, residentials, events and conferences.
• Oversee room bookings, check-ins/outs, ensuring smooth turnaround of all accommodations between occupancy.

4. Procurement

• Manage procurement for hospitality goods and services in consultation with the Management Accountant and the Director of Operations.
• Monitor costs and implement efficiencies while maintaining quality.

Financial Controller Role

The Diocese of Arundel & Brighton is a registered charity with care of 250 staff, 180 members of clergy, and many hundreds of volunteers. Reporting to the Chief Operating Officer, the successful applicant will oversee a finance team of 5, including a qualified management accountant and two colleagues engaged in studies.

The finance team supports cloud-based accounting for 80 parishes; overseeing a significant number of transactions, submitting the monthly payroll to the outsourced payroll bureau, and providing the finance function for central operations based at The St Philip Howard Centre in Crawley.

The Financial Controller will be responsible for ;

• Producing statutory audited accounts and acting as the principal contact for external auditors.
• Report on finance matters to the quarterly Diocesan Finance Committee (DFC)
• Oversee the finance team in delivering the budget process and production of quarterly cashflow and budget forecasts, leading on tax compliance, VAT (for one subsidiary), and Gift Aid.

The role is suitable for someone with ideally at least 3 years experience with strong all-round knowledge and accuracy, particularly in month-end processes, bookkeeping (including oversight of accounts payable and receivable processes), ledger experience (ideally Xero), the experience of management accounts, cash flow, VAT, audit processes, gift aid.

Charity and/or Cultural Sector experience a distinct advantage, as is the demonstrable ability to identify opportunities to improve efficiency of processes and implement them as appropriate

Essential Skills

• Ideally a minimum of 3 years' experience of working in a financial accounting role
• Holds a professional finance qualification, part-qualified, or qualified by experience but also currently training to obtaining a recognised accounting qualification (ACA, ACCA, CIMA or equivalent)

• Experience of:
  • the key areas of accounting processes and systems, including management accounts, trial balance and nominal ledger, purchase and sales ledgers, banking and cash management, balance sheet, VAT, payroll, budgeting and monitoring
  • working for a charity or charity accounting
• Strong level of IT skills:
  • familiar with Microsoft Office
  • proficient in Microsoft Excel for Accounting (SUMIF, LOOKUP, Pivot tables)
  • practical working knowledge of accounting software packages (ideally Xero)
• Excellent attention to detail with high level of numeracy and accuracy, whilst working at a fast pace  
• Ability to resolve problems using own initiative and an eye for financial opportunities 
• Strong organisational skills and able to work independently, manage and prioritising a busy and varied personal workload, often working to challenging deadlines 
• Has a "continuous improvement" mind set, questioning processes and investigating better ways of working within the role

Summary of duties:

The provision of accurate and timely business support and analysis, including:

• Responsible for the ongoing day-to-day running of the company’s financial systems, primarily on Xero accounting software and Excel. 
• Management of month-end process ensuring all procedures are completed including bank reconciliations. 
• Support departments in finance reports in liaison with department contacts, discuss/resolve any variances. 
• Delivering other ad hoc reporting and analysis for all departments as required
• Ad hoc financial guidance and input for departments as required, ensuring a high level of responsiveness and assistance, particularly for larger one-off projects. 
• Develop, review and document all financial systems and procedures and keep information and processes up to date, (Soldo Card, approval & posting of purchase invoices) 
• Balance sheet – posting and reconciling all the balance sheet accounts including the processing of prepayments, deferrals and accruals as required
• Building and maintaining excellent relationships and levels of customer service across the GM
• Supporting the part-time Director of Finance in the development of the finance system in relation to management reporting and analysis
• Assisting in maintaining and improving our internal controls and processes as the finance function continues to grow
• Work with external partner to ensure that the annual accounts are provided in a timely manner
• Ensure annual Gift Aid claims are completed and processed in a timely manner
• Manage the accounts payable process and ensure all invoices are posted correctly, and paid in line with company policy. 
• Oversee the accounts receivable process and ensure all sales invoices are posted correctly.
• Review debtors weekly and take action to ensure invoices are settled in good time. 
• Review and resolve any issues with monthly bank reconciliations. 
• Prepare management accounts, cashflow and other papers, as required. 

• Monthly Payroll: To ensure:
  • correct posting and reporting, so as to enable Finance Director review and authorisation for payment;
  • all PAYE and pension contributions are submitted and paid on time
  • effective interaction with the HR manager who prepares and manages the monthly payroll and the company auto-enrolment pension scheme) 
• Compilation and submission of monthly payroll to external payroll provider including staff salaries, reviewed by the Finance Director.

• Support in monitoring and to ensure the company’s compliance with financial and finance-related regulations including tax, VAT, accounting regulations, Charity Commission, Companies' House (including SORP, SOFA) and Charities Act. 

· Responsible for ensuring that all transactional processing happens efficiently and effectively.

· Manage and maintain the fixed assets register ensuring the company has accurate and relevant information on all assets.

General responsibilities:

• Participate in staff meetings and appropriate working groups
• Carry out any other reasonable duties, in line with role requirements or as instructed by your line manager

About the Role  

The Head of Finance will support the Director of Finance and Resources in providing strategic financial leadership across the charity. They will oversee day-to-day financial operations, ensure robust financial management, and deliver timely and accurate financial reporting to support decision-making. The postholder will play a key role in safeguarding the charity’s financial sustainability and compliance with statutory and regulatory requirements. 

Key Responsibilities  

Financial Planning 

• Preparation of annual budgets and long-term financial plans. 

• Provision of  financial analysis to inform strategic and operational decision-making. 

Financial Management & Reporting 

• Oversee the production of monthly management accounts, variance analysis, and cash flow forecasts. 

• Ensure timely and accurate preparation of year-end accounts and the coordination of external audits. 

• Provide regular financial reports and analysis in accordance with organisational timetables set by the Director of Finance & Resources. 

• Monitor restricted funds ensuring compliance with donor requirements. 

Governance & Compliance 

• Ensure compliance with Charity Commission, Companies House, HMRC, and other statutory requirements for filing of accounts. 

• Maintain up-to-date knowledge of charity finance regulations, SORP, VAT, and tax issues relevant to the sector. 

Systems, Processes & Controls 

• Ensure that financial processes and procedures are fit for purpose, up to date and efficient. 

• Lead the development and maintenance of efficient financial systems, policies, and procedures. 

• Ensure effective internal controls are in place across the organisation to  facilitate accurate and timely delivery of reporting to support organisational decision making. 

• Oversee grant reporting and donor compliance. 

Team Leadership & Collaboration 

• Develop and support the finance team to deliver a high-quality service. 

• Foster a culture of continuous improvement within the finance function. 

• Work collaboratively with non-finance managers across the organisation to build financial awareness and accountability. 

Person Specification 

Essential 

• A relevant professional accounting qualification (ACA, ACCA, CIMA). 

• Experience gained in a financial management role within a small or medium-sized organisation. 

• Experience in business planning, performance management and impact reporting.  

• Significant experience in managing a high-performance team. 

• Strong IT skills, particularly with accounting software and Excel. 

• Understanding of charity finance and accounting practices. 

• Strong understanding of charity law, governance best practices, and regulatory frameworks. 

• Excellent written and verbal communication. 
• Strong interpersonal with an ability to establish and maintain good working relationships. 

• Ability to manage multiple priorities and work collaboratively across teams. 

• Ability to work independently, prioritise workload, and meet deadlines.

Desirable 

• Significant experience in financial management  within the charity, not-for-profit, or public sector. 
• Experience of working with restricted funds and grant reporting. 
• Knowledge of charity tax, VAT, and fundraising income streams.

Finance Manager 
We are seeking a Finance Manager to join the growing Reaching Higher team and bring our finance function fully in-house. We are looking for a skilled and detail-oriented professional who will play a pivotal role in ensuring strong financial systems, accurate reporting, and sound financial planning. The successful candidate will demonstrate a proven track record in financial management and governance, budgeting and forecasting, payroll and pension oversight, and the ability to provide clear strategic insight and analysis to support organisational growth and sustainability.

Purpose of this Role

Our finance functions are currently partially outsourced to an external contractor. Our income has grown significantly over the past five years and our Board have now decided to employ a Finance Manager and bring financial expertise in-house. In this new position as the Finance Manager at Reaching Higher, you will play a vital role in ensuring accurate financial reporting and planning, payroll and pension management, and financial governance and compliance. You will support all aspects of Reaching Higher’s work and development through ensuring strong financial systems. 

You will work closely with our team to ensure that all day-to-day finance requirements are met, including accurate grant finance monitoring and reporting to multiple funders. You will also work closely with our senior leaders and board to build the charity’s financial resilience and the financial awareness of our wider team.

You will work closely with the Executive Assistant & Administrator and report to the Executive Director, as well as working closely with the Executive Team, Treasurer and wider Board. 

 

About Reaching Higher 

Reaching Higher is a youth organisation which works with over 2000 young people aged 9-21 each year across Croydon and surrounding boroughs. Developed in partnership with local churches, we are a youth-led charity with a Christian ethos and this role is restricted under basis of faith.We have a particular emphasis on providing mentoring support to young people and supporting their development as leaders. We have established strong links with key local, London and UK-wide organisations and our approach leads us into regular working contact with partner schools, community groups and churches.

Qualification 

-AAT or Accountancy body qualified preferred, with at least 5 years’ experience

Experience

-Experience of maintaining accounting ledgers

-Experience of charity accounting & SORP principles

-Experience of a Finance Manager role 

-Experience of using Microsoft packages with excellent IT skills

-Experience of working in a small team

-Experience preparing monthly / quarterly management accounts

-Experience preparing annual statutory accounts and being involved with audit processes

-Experience managing financial operations, planning, reconciliation, reporting and analysis

-Experience of working with and co-ordinating income and expenditure across multi-project budgets

-Experience running monthly payroll 

-Knowledge of a range accounting software – preferably Xero
