The Development Manager will play a critical role in developing and managing individual fundraising for the Cathedral with a particular focus on engaging and inspiring the Cathedral’s individual supporters, Major Donors and prospects with the work of the Cathedral, developing and implementing robust stewardship activity and undertaking and developing vital prospecting processes to support both priority projects and year round fundraising.

This role will line manage the Development Assistant.

As Development Manager you will:

· Lead on creating and developing the Individual Giving strategy for the Cathedral, in consultation with the Director of Development.

· Deepen relationships with existing supporters by developing and delivering an impactful stewardship framework for individual donors.

· Work in consultation with the marketing team to create inspiring and relevant communication strategy for individual supporters with a focus on impact, to include regular feedback mechanisms to improve stewardship plans and engagement.

· Build the financial resilience of the Cathedral through developing individual prospecting processes, prospect research, and developing qualified prospect pipelines to secure income from individual supporters and major donors. With an initial focus on the Vicars’ Close project and developing in line with future priorities.

· Work with the Director of Development to develop an inspiring range of bespoke cultivation plans for Major Donors.

· Design, deliver and support a range of unique events to inspire supporters and cultivate new relationships, bringing to life the extraordinary work of the Cathedral. Work across the cathedral to integrate fundraising into existing events and programmes.

· Achieve results through persuasive and compelling proposals for Major Donors and creation of robust budgets. Amplify project impact through inspiring reports and personalised engagement opportunities.

· Develop, manage and deliver Wells Cathedral’s individual giving programmes, including Planned Giving, regular inspiring appeals and individual giving opportunities as part of priority projects.

· Strengthen supporter relationships across the organisation, working with the Cathedral leadership team, Chapter and project leads to support engagement with individual donors and Major Donors.

· Develop and implement plans to keep existing donors engaged, with opportunities to increase their level of giving over time and in line with projects and targeted appeals.

· Regularly report progress to the Development Director and Cathedral Chapter on the individual giving income pipeline, supporter engagement, upcoming opportunities, and challenges.

· Keep up to date with trends and good practice and identify opportunities to improve and develop Wells Cathedral’s individual giving.

· Utilise CRM as an effective Relationship Management tool and develop robust prospecting processes.

· As the Cathedral’s Gift in Wills strategy develops, support engagement opportunities for individual supporters and develop appropriate processes to support this area.

· Network and keep abreast of the wider funding landscape and giving trends to inform the strategy.

· Support the team through additional duties as reasonably required to assist the smooth and efficient running of the Development Team and maximise the impact of the fundraising function. Some weekend and out of hours working may be required.

The Service Manager will be responsible for the operations of one service in Berkshire (Slough) which supports one individual to live in his own home.

The individual is a sociable and engaging man with a warm sense of humour and a deep appreciation for nature, music, and familiar company. He lives with a diagnosis of moderate learning disability, autism spectrum disorder, psychotic illness, epilepsy, and type 2 diabetes, all of which require thoughtful and consistent support. The customer has been living successfully in his current placement for over ten years, where he benefits from the continuity of staff who know him well, understand his routines, and help him maintain a sense of safety and autonomy.

The role will provide line management for a team of seven Specialist Behaviour Support Workers, ensuring that compliance with organisational, legal regulations and those of the local authority are adhered to and the quality of support is of the highest standard possible, ensuring excellent quality of life for the customer and a good working environment for colleagues.

The service has received a CQC rating of Good. The current team size includes 5 FTEs (Specialist Behaviour Support Workers) plus 2 FTEs Waking Night Support Workers, ensuring comprehensive support coverage across all shifts.

The working pattern for this role is primarily Monday to Friday, 9 am to 5 pm, with occasional requirements for weekend and out-of-hours work to meet service needs.

The anticipated start date for this role is October.

The initial contract duration is 6 months, with potential to become a permanent role after this period.

Our Volunteers 

We utilise volunteers and community participants across all areas of our work to support and enrich the work we deliver. It is important to understand the different sets of volunteers we work with: 

Winter – over 400 volunteers come together each winter to run our Caring at Christmas day centre and distribute food deliveries across the city. Caring at Christmas has a legacy of over 30 years and relies on a range of volunteers from highly experienced to completely new to the organisation. Additionally, during particularly cold weather, Caring in Bristol volunteers support emergency shelters in the evenings and mornings. 

Food clubs – a small but committed set of volunteers help deliver our Bristol Goods food support programme. We have a fantastic set of regular volunteers at our Hartcliffe and city-centre food clubs with plans for a new location soon. 

Youth services –our accommodation project launched in July 2024, providing four bedrooms for 18-25 year olds each night. Our youth team also run group sessions throughout the week. Volunteers are needed to provide invaluable support to these activities to ensure the young people feel welcome and comfortable. 

Co-Production and Consultation Participants – our committed group of community members are essential to shaping the way we work, taking their housing knowledge out in the wider community. They are often used as a focus group for housing/policy consultations, supported by our Outreach Worker. This work is established in South Bristol, and we are developing a similar group in North Bristol. 

Community Advocates – This is an exciting area of work we wish to develop and grow over the next year; training up community members on Housing Rights and routes for support, empowering them to share this knowledge, signposting those in need of support so to prevent homelessness. 

Fundraising & Office Volunteers – we often have tasks that volunteers can help with which help the “back office” of the charity. This could include helping to organise events, fundraising activities, stuffing mailing envelopes, stocktaking our food store or offering specialist skills /advice.

About the role

Reporting in to the Financial Planning & Analysis Lead, the Payroll Manager is a key role within our Finance team responsible for managing all aspects of Christian Aid's Global payroll function ensuring full compliance with relevant national and international legislation regarding salaries, income tax, pensions, national insurance and equivalent schemes (UK and overseas) requiring completeness and accuracy in all aspects to meet organisational needs.

The main areas of responsibility for the post-holder will be:

-Ensure process and systems are in place to facilitate payment for all Christian Aid and contract employees are accurate, on time, in compliance with all local (i.e. both UK and non-UK) legislation on tax and other deductions, and in accordance with Christian Aid employment policies and procedures.

-Monthly payroll reports prepared in a timely manner to support the payroll sign off process with a commitment to high quality work

-Relationship with the Payroll administrators is effectively managed promoting the exchange of ideas, empowering and maximising impact.

-Pension schemes are managed efficiently and effectively, ensuring that all statutory and administrative deadlines are met and aligned with organisational values and goals.

-Salary budgets and payroll management information is maintained and accurate and all ledger and control accounts are reconciled.

-Salary sacrifice and other benefit schemes are created and maintained according to HMRC regulations, and all statutory requirements are met.

-All aspects of payroll and related areas are managed and developed promoting a culture of collaboration, continuous learning, and collective progress.

-Effective matrix management of the Senior People Advisors in relation to payroll activities and ensuring that People team members are trained and supported in technical areas in order to support the accurate and efficient running of the payroll function creating an environment of continuous learning, motivating the team to align with organisational values and goals.

-Leading project work ensuring correct implementation of government and organisational initiatives fostering collaboration and creating high-impact outcomes.

About you

Essential:

-Professional payroll qualification (MCIPP or equivalent).

-Proven track record in managing a highly effective payroll.

-Advanced knowledge of and expertise in HMRC regulations.

-Substantial experience in the use of one or more financial accounting packages.

-Highly developed technical skills ensuring detail and precision, and highly accurate numeracy skills.

-Advanced technical skills to the level required to be the system administrator for the computerised payroll system.

-High developed communication skills to advise and guide on technical issues and queries.

Desirable:

-Qualified accountant.

-Experience of one or more non-UK tax.

-Pensions administration experience and expertise.

-Project management and people skills.

-Expertise in designing, interpreting, running and reviewing relevant reports for both management information purposes and statutory requirements.
