Flynne’s Barn is a charity supporting young people living with cancer. We offer residential stays in the Lake District, bringing young people with a shared experience of cancer together to build community. Scotty’s Little Soldiers is a UK-based charity dedicated to supporting military children and young people (0 to 25 years) who have experienced the death of a parent who served in the British Armed Forces. Scotty’s is seeking an experienced bereavement counsellor to join our small but effective team. The role involves supporting children and young people affected by bereavement, which may include death in service, illness, or suicide.

Our Bereavement Counsellor will be a valuable member of the SUPPORT Programme, delivering online 1:1 and group support to those who need it most. But all three programmes work closely together (we call this the Families team).
Role Mission:
The Scotty’s Bereavement Counsellor will work with our families who are struggling with their grief to help them understand their feelings, develop coping skills and build their new life.
This role will be accountable for:
Providing emotional support, counselling and therapeutic interventions to individuals and families coping with grief and loss. The role involves working compassionately and ethically with families affected by bereavement, helping them process their emotions and find ways to adjust to life after a loss.
The Bereavement Counsellor will work collaboratively with the SUPPORT team and the wider Families team to ensure that all work undertaken by Scotty’s is delivered in a supportive and sensitive manner and that Scotty families receive exemplary care.
What are the 3-month goals for this role:
· Within three months the Counsellor will have developed their knowledge of the range of services that Scotty’s offers to our families so that they can advise and support families in their case load.
· Will have begun to learn and understand the Scotty Values and the Scotty Way (we do things a little differently and our culture is very important to us and our families!).
· Would have begun supporting the families assigned to their caseload by the Head of SUPPORT. This will predominantly if not entirely be online 1:1 delivery.
· Will have completed all necessary safeguarding training and be part of the Scotty’s Safeguarding team.
· Begun attending peer supervision sessions with the SUPPORT team.
What are the 6-month goals for this role:
· Will have established a caseload as assigned by the Head of SUPPORT which is likely to include 1:1 online sessions, and may also include online group sessions, drop ins or workshops.
· Will have begun to support the wider Families team by attending Scotty events. At Scotty events, a SUPPORT team member often attends to provide support to any families in distress (this may require occasional weekend or evening work).
· Will be working cohesively with the Families team and the wider Scotty team to share your knowledge and skills. Scotty’s values a culture of learning and strives to ensure team members can learn from one another’s expertise.
· Will be contributing to peer supervision sessions to ensure all SUPPORT team members are able to give the best support to families.
· Regularly meeting with your selected external supervisor.
What are the 9-month goals for this role:
· Will be supporting a caseload as assigned by the Head of SUPPORT, with emerging impact data showing the success of your support. Scotty’s uses the Child Bereavement Service Questionnaire (CBSQ) developed by the CBN to monitor the impact of 1:1 support and the Strengths and Difficulties Questionnaire (SDQ) for pre-bereavement support.
· Will be a valuable member of the SUPPORT programme, Families and wider Scotty team. Providing first rate bereavement counselling and support directly to families but also indirectly helping families by working collaboratively with other team members.
What are the key responsibilities of this role:
· Managing a caseload and delivering one to one counselling sessions as assigned by the Head of SUPPORT. This will predominantly be online delivery using Teams video calling but also other formats as needed by families.
· Facilitate group therapy or support groups when appropriate.
· Conduct initial assessment to determine clients’ needs and suitability for counselling.
· Maintaining accurate and confidential case notes in a timely fashion using our Salesforce based system in accordance with data protection and organisational policies.
· Adhering to all safeguarding requirements and operating as part of the Scotty Safeguarding team to maintain the highest standards across the charity.
· Supporting the development of resources and materials as needed.
· Working collaboratively within the SUPPORT team, including peer supervision.
· Working collaboratively and effectively within the Families team to ensure that families are directed to the appropriate services in a timely fashion. This could include directing families you are working with towards our educational grants, our respite breaks, our events, our school support or our advocacy.
· Liaise with healthcare and mental health professionals such as GPs, CAMHS and social workers or other professionals where appropriate to ensure holistic care and management of risk.
· Attending at least six (mandatory) face to face team days, normally located in the East of England.
· Participate in regular clinical supervision and continuing professional development.
Skillset and Experiences Required:
Essential
· Member of the British Association for Counselling and Psychotherapy (BACP) or United Kingdom Council for Psychotherapy (UKCP). We may consider applications from practitioners with HCPC or NCS membership too.
· Level 4 Counselling / Psychotherapy Diploma or above.
· Significant experience (post qualification) providing bereavement counselling, to children or young people (0-25yrs).
· Experience and training with NICE-approved talking therapies.
· Demonstrated knowledge of issues surrounding bereavement.
· Ability to manage caseload effectively.
· Willingness to work flexible hours to accommodate children’s needs (this may include evening work to avoid school hours at times).

This is an exciting opportunity for experienced tutors with a love of learning to help bright students overcome barriers to academic achievement. Tutorials generally take place between the hours of 3pm and 8pm on weekday evenings, with flexibility around the schedules of our tutors and students.

Purpose of the post
HDR UK are committed to meaningful involvement and engagement where patients and the public are actively involved in shaping our work and decision-making. Reporting to the Senior Public Involvement and Engagement Manager and matrix managed within the Big Data for Complex Disease team, this is a pivotal role that will maintain and build upon an established strategy and programme of activities embedding the patient and public voice at all stages of work with the Driver Programme.
Your work will also support best practice delivered as part of the Public Engagement in Data Research Initiative (PEDRI), a vital UK-wide multi-stakeholder initiative that aims to facilitate a sector wide shift focused on establishing and advancing good practices for public involvement and engagement (PIE) with data-driven research and statistics.
You will work closely with public members, research and NHS communities, internal colleagues, charity partners, and funders to develop and implement plans for patient and public involvement and engagement.
This is an exciting opportunity for someone who has a passion for meaningful involvement and engagement of patients and the public in research, to shape and influence our work on the safe, ethical and scientifically robust use of data for research into the causes, prevention and treatment of disease.
The successful candidate will have a track record in working with individuals, groups and communities and can communicate complex information in clear, engaging ways. The post holder will have excellent influencing and negotiation skills, experience of working on complex projects with multiple partners and be comfortable with working at pace. Patient and public involvement and engagement in data-driven research is a growing field. Main responsibilities
Big Data for Complex Disease PPIE strategy and delivery:
- Lead on the delivery of the PPIE strategy for the Big Data for Complex Disease driver programme, with oversight from the Senior PPIE Manager and Senior Programme Manager.
- Develop and deliver training and support best practice for researchers working with patients and the public on involvement and engagment in health data research.
- Support member development and growth of the network of patients and public contributors involved in the Big Data for Complex Disease driver programme, including by providing training and guidance on data science and its use in the programme.
Embedding PPIE in our work:
- Lead and facilitate meetings with public contributors to integrate meaningful PPIE throughout all aspects of our work.
- Undertake and manage specific involvement and engagement activities, including but not limited to focus groups, engagement events, developing and undertaking surveys, supporting the writing of plain English summaries of projects and their outputs. In collaboration with senior colleagues, support involvement of patients and the public in the governance of our work.
- Review and provide advice on PPIE elements of research projects ensuring adequate PPIE is incorporated and provide advice and support where needed to researchers.
- Develop methods to expand reach and ensure diversity of perspectives and work with the HDR UK Involvement and Engagement team to grow involvement of currently underrepresented and underserved groups in health data science.
- Build and manage relationships with colleagues within the Big Data for Complex Disease driver programme and relevant partners like the British Heart Foundation (BHF) Data Science Centre, working collaboratively to support and manage involvement and engagement across all areas of work.
- Work closely with the internal communications colleagues to create and disseminate engaging content (e.g. news stories on outputs and impact, videos, infographics, case studies) on our work and involvement and engagement activities using a variety of communication tools.
- Horizon scan and liaise with colleagues across HDR UK for opportunities to increase visibility of the institute’s engagement and involvement impact, i.e. through conferences, festivals, journals and other publications.
- Lead on the recruitment of new public contributors as required. Adapt, develop and provide training for public where necessary identifying training requirements as needed.
Developing PPIE best practice and collaborative working:
- Work with the Senior PPIE Programme Delivery Manager and the rest of the PPIE Central team to share best practice and examples of successful PPIE practices that could influence our work, including through the Public Engagement in Data Research Initiative (PEDRI).
- Collaborate with the Senior PPIE Programme Delivery Manager, the PPIE Central team, and the HDR UK’s Institute-Wide PPIE Leads Group to lead public outreach initiatives and other events, ensuring that stakeholders are afforded opportunities to contribute their input and provide feedback. Establish effective working relationships and ‘ways of working’ with strategic partners to maximise opportunities for collaboration in patient and public involvement and engagement.
- Act as an internal and external ambassador for public, patient and practitioner engagement and involvement.
- Monitor and report on performance of PPIE across the Programme, make effective use of digital approaches to maximise the ability to collaborate, communicate and continuously learn.

This role will help us to show in a real and human, authentic way, what Sands is doing to save babies’ lives and support bereaved families.
Sharing these personal stories in external communications will help us reach more people, bringing to life the work we do in a way that engages diverse audiences, and increasing the likelihood of their taking actions in support of Sands.
This new role has been developed to support the Communications & Engagement team to develop our story-telling function, build our real stories library and ensure the associated consent and stewardship processes are compassionate, efficient and effective. The Stories Officer will ensure wherever possible, that external communications assets and content created by teams across Sands includes the voices of people touched by pregnancy and baby loss – including those who have been personally affected, and those who are allies of Sands, such as healthcare professionals, corporate partners, research partners, fundraisers and more.
You will have experience of working in a charity stories or communications team, or in a stories-led environment such as journalism.
A good knowledge of compliance and safeguarding issues, including experience of working with vulnerable people in a communications context is required.
With excellent written communication and creative skills, you will be able to produce work that captures and conveys real life experiences in a sensitive and compassionate tone.
You will be highly organised with the ability to multi-task and work across more than one project simultaneously.

Key Responsibilities
- Trust Fundraising
- Prospecting – researching new trust and foundation opportunities
- Writing five-figure applications
- Managing a portfolio of 25-30 Trusts and Foundations
- Thanking – writing thank you letters, notes and confirmation receipts
- Banking – liaising with our colleagues in finance and supporters, to support receipt of funding
- Supporting the design of new thanking materials and a schedule of keeping supporters updated - thank you cards, seasonal messaging, reporting templates
- Reporting – annually to donors, managing reporting schedule with Senior Fundraising Manager and colleagues in finance.
- Small trusts outreach and mailings.
- CRM: Updating our database on a weekly basis, data entry, updating current funders, payment schedules, agreements, building dashboards
- Monthly review of fundraising pipelines and opportunities, supporting the team with forecasting and their own pipeline management

- Ensure learning meets development guidelines, and is accessible, functional and engaging.
- Integrate learning content to create courses on our learning management system (Moodle).
- Test learning content, including using screen readers and other accessibility software.
- Help to maintain the guidelines for course development.
- Support the day-to-day administration of the Sea Cadets learning management environment
- Cultivate strong working relationships across multiple teams (internal and external)
- Stay up to date with latest system upgrades and advise on their potential impact on existing or new courses
