Job description

Job Title:Adult Engagement and Wellbeing Coordinator

Department:England Support Service Team 

Reports to:Health Development Manager 

Salary:up to £28,500 pro rata (dependent on experience) 

Hours:28 hours (over 4 or 5 days)

Location:Home based with travel throughout England, and occasional travel to Wales and Northern Ireland 

Purpose of Job 

To deliver a high quality wellbeing and engagement service to individuals with spina bifida and/or hydrocephalus through Shine membership, focussing on our adult members. 

To empower and enable members living with the conditions to lead healthy and happy lives through greater independence, better condition management and by creating links to the Shine community across England, Wales and Northern Ireland 

Core role 

Working with our various service teams across England, Wales and Northern Ireland to lead our offer to adult members with Spina Bifida and/or Hydrocephalus by delivering and/or co-ordinating: 

  • The delivery of group activities, events and sessions (virtual and/or face to face) to combat loneliness, promote wellbeing and good physical health maintenance routines. 

  • Our engagement and communication with adult members through social media, email, phone and post to create/promote positive peer support groups and regular positive discussion. 

  • The provision of advice, support and guidance to enable our adult members to access the right NHS services to improve their health and well-being, and to better co-ordinate their care and independence. This will include attending specialist clinics to engage with them (where they exist and are running). 

  • The referral of individual members and/or their families/carers to the most appropriate source of expertise and support in Shine’s Health team, Benefits team and other designated specialists within the organisation, or signpost to external agencies as appropriate. 

  • The participation of adult members in surveys and co-production to inform our delivery and ensure that our health and wellbeing offer is evidence-led

  • Opportunities to recruit and work with Shine volunteers. 

  • The provision of information for professionals working with individuals and families affected by Spina Bifida and/or Hydrocephalus. 

  • To take available opportunities where possible to raise greater awareness of Spina Bifida and/or Hydrocephalus amongst professionals, external organisations and the general public through presentations, training and attendance at professional events. 

  • The active promotion of membership of Shine to people with the relevant conditions. 

  • Clear and accurate record keeping for monitoring and evaluation using our Charity Log System 

  •  Work with service, fundraising, marketing, trust and grants colleagues and Shine’s membership to identify and seize potential fundraising opportunities for long-term sustainability of the work. 

  • The creation and sharing of an up to date directory of relevant contacts, 

  • To undertake administrative duties as required of the role. 

Any other duties in line with the job role. 

Core criteria - essential 

  • Ability to travel across the designated areas 

  • Flexible working hours, this may include some weekends and overnight stays 

  • Ability to work from home 

  • The ability to be motivated and work on your own initiative with lone working from home, whilst also travelling across the area to be part of the wider dispersed team. 

  • Full Enhanced DBS checks will be completed 

Experience and qualifications – essential 

  • Hold a registered qualification in a health (including mental health), nursing, social care or disability related field 

  • Experience of working with disabled adults 

  • At least two years’ recent experience of delivering support and advice on one or more of the following: 

Health and wellbeing; independence; finance and benefits; social care, developing friendships and social skills; reducing isolation 

  • Experience of developing and delivering opportunities to enable and empower people with disabilities to achieve their goals towards independence. 

Knowledge, skills and abilities – essential 

  • Understanding of spina bifida and hydrocephalus and of the issues and challenges faced by people living with these conditions 

  • Ability to work with people individually and facilitate group activities/events 

  • Excellent communication skills, verbally and written with a good working knowledge of digital communication, social media posting and messaging 

  • IT literate with a good knowledge of computer systems and programmes (e.g. Word, Excel, PowerPoint) and use of databases 

  • A non-judgemental approach to working with people 

Knowledge, skills and abilities – desirable 

  • A good understanding of the role peer support plays in enhancing services and support to members 

  • A good understanding of how to use social media and its effectiveness in reducing social isolation
