Are you a healthcare professional—or nearing qualification—and looking for a meaningful way to give back?

The Brain & Spine Foundation is looking for three Health Professionals to join our trusted national Helpline as volunteers.

Our Helpline offers a safe, supportive space where individuals and families living with neurological conditions can receive practical and emotional guidance. Run by experienced neuroscience nurses, we handled over 2,500 enquiries in 2024 alone. Now, we’re growing—and we would love your help.

Who are LRMN? 

We offer refugees, asylum seekers and other migrants a specialist and holistic service. We advocate for people’s rights, campaign for wider change, meet their basic needs and help  them improve their wellbeing. 

Why do we need you? 

Advocacy volunteers are an essential part of our team, making sure that clients are able to access the right service. You will deal with initial client enquiries (in person, over the phone or  by email), assess what support clients need and help them access the right service for them.  This might be with us, a partner or another external service. 

Our admin team is integral to the smooth running of LRMN. Without them our advisors wouldn’t be able to provide life changing support to the people who access our services. 

Our admin team are the first people that clients will talk to so it is essential that we offer a safe, welcoming and non-judgemental space and give them the right information about the  services we offer. Given the demand that we face, volunteers help us do that. 
 

What activities will you be involved in?  

As an Advocacy Volunteer, you will work alongside staff and fellow volunteers to provide practical support, advocacy, and guidance to individuals accessing our services. Your role is essential in helping service users navigate various systems, simple applications, access key entitlements, and receive the support they need to improve their circumstances.Your key responsibilities will include:

• Client Support:

  • Assist clients in completing applications for:

    • Free bus transportation

    • Oyster cards (60+ and 65+)

    • National Insurance Number (NIN)

    • Nursery, school, and college admissions/registrations
       

• Signposting and Referrals:

  • Ensure service users who cannot access our services are signposted or referred to appropriate external organizations.
     

• Information and Guidance:

  • Help clients and referrers understand the services we offer and how to access them effectively.

• Administrative Support:

  • Undertake various administrative tasks as identified by the team.

• Expanded Duties (as experience grows):

  • Assist with additional basic applications not listed above.

  • Support clients with simple letter writing and documentation.

  • Take on other relevant duties as needed.  

Location & Schedule:

• This role is based in our Deptford office, specifically during Thursday drop-in sessions.

Is there induction and training? 

Yes, we provide a comprehensive induction to all new volunteers. This covers roles and  responsibilities, safeguarding, record keeping and use of our client management system  (Advice Pro).

You will be provided with the training needed to perform the role and will have the  opportunity to join training with the whole LRMN team.

We rely on your support to keep serving the older residents with in the Wamdsworth community. We have a dedicated team of experienced staff and a large network of dedicated local volunteers. Our aim is to enable everyone to age well in Wandsworth. We would love your help to be able to continue to support older Wandsworth residents.

Our Be-a-Friend service is one of our longest running services, matching people over 65, who live alone and have limited social contact, with a friendly local volunteer with similar hobbies and interests. The volunteer and their new friend set up a suitable time for them to meet each week for a chat and a cup of tea, which could be during the day, in the evening on the way home from work or even on the weekends . If you would prefer to volunteer from home, you can also be matched with an older person for telephone befriending. For many of our matched pairs, this is the beginning of a firm friendship. 

Befriending Plus

Befriending Plus is an extended version of the Be-a-Friend programme, for individulas needing help with life admin and small tasks as well as companionship. For Befriending Plus pairs, time spent together can include helping to use a phone or tablet, helping the client to organise their file, going out for a coffee or popping to the post office together. This support can help older people to stay independent at home for longer, as well as increasing their confidence to do these tasks when the volunteer is not there.

Background to the role:

Keep Active is a volunteer-delivered project at The Creighton Centre, which aims to provide support to older people (60+) who have had a fall, stroke or other illness.  We work in partnership with the NHS Community Rehabilitation Service across Hammersmith & Fulham. As a Keep Active Volunteer you would visit an older person (the average age is 84) once a week for up to nine weeks to help them with improving mobility indoors with exercises, or outdoors with walks in their community. This project aims to empower people to get back to independence, access community once more and reduce risks of future falls and hospital re-admittance.

Availability/commitment:

· To live in or near Hammersmith and Fulham, or travel regularly through

· To be able to spare 1-2 hours a week, preferably during working hours

Role of the Keep Active Volunteer:

· To attend an initial one-off training session [with Volunteer Coordinator and therapists from NHS rehabilitation teams].

· To visit an older person’s home once a week for up to 9 weeks to supervise and motivate them to continue practicing their exercise and walking goals, as prescribed by NHS rehabilitation teams.

· Support might include:

- A walk around their local community possibly going to the park or visiting shops.

- Encouraging them to complete a prescribed gentle exercise program.

- Keeping an older and sometimes isolated person company.

- Visiting someone in their homes to help them reach their exercise goals.

NB: Please note that this is a volunteer role and you will not be expected to provide any physical support. This is a motivational role only.

We will provide:

· Induction training and NHS Community Rehabilitation led training (weekday training).

· Regular contact and support from the project staff.

· Occasional social events for volunteers

· Occasional training opportunities for volunteers

· A reference after 3-6 months of volunteering with us

· An enhanced DBS check

· Reimbursement of travel expenses incurred during your volunteering

Access to Healthcare has a very small team that works with clients to get over problems they have in getting healthcare. This might include helping them register with a GP, get medical records, find emergency medical treatment, understand what their rights to healthcare are, and encourage people to find out about vaccinations.  We also advise and support clients if they have been charged for NHS treatment.

What activities will you be involved in?

As part of our Access to Healthcare volunteer team you will:

• Help clients register with GPs – this might involve:

  • finding a GP local to the client

  • calling surgeries to enquire/explain the right to register

  • explaining process to a client and sharing links/info

  • following up with clients to ensure they were able to register

• Help clients access other medical services, as needed

• Help clients understand the services we offer and how to access them

• Help plan and run small community engagement projects around access to healthcare

• Take on other administrative tasks as identified from time to time

You will report to the Access to Healthcare Advisor but will liaise with staff across the organisation as appropriate.

EcoCore covers a lot of ground because the climate and biodiversity crisis is so all-encompassing, which means we have a lot of varied and different volunteer tasks available, ranging from carbon footprint data collection, setting up sub-teams of friends or colleagues or doing social media or running workshops. 

Your responsibilities would be to create volunteer tasks from our work streams, which would include things like: 

• creating a role description for each volunteer task to give a good outline of everything required and expected

• keeping track of what volunteers are active on

• encouraging and inspiring volunteers to deliver on commitments

• creating an incentives or rewards framework for volunteers, potentially working with supporting businesses to agree on gift vouchers, tokens etc

• managing a small budget

• building up a social network with events, collaborations and other inputs

• using our social media accounts to advertise, to celebrate achievements etc

• help other directors, trustees & secretary keep reporting, stats, and feedback on activities up-to-date

Goals

1. Our 2025 target is 100 people doing their carbon footprints

2. We’re looking for 20 coordinators

3. We have about a dozen volunteering roles to fill beyond the two above

What are we looking for?

1. You should be a people-person with experience of managing people. You should be happy to put in the time and effort communicating with the volunteers both all-together and individually in a way that gets the best results from them.

2. Personal change is only one of the five ways that we can change society - we don't focus on personal change alone, we want to change our community, our local businesses and our local government.

What difference will you make?

Society has got itself into a dangerous situation with the climate crisis and EcoCounts aims to create a way out. We need all sorts of different people, not just climate nerds and sustainability fanatics, although of course that doesn't hurt. The person we need right now is someone who knows what people need to keep them happy and effective as a volunteer for us.

Being a volunteer-based organisation at this stage still, that might make the volunteer chief of staff the most important person we have. Of course we all consider each other equal. Being small and dynamic means EcoCounts can offer the flexibility for you to do an excellent and fulfilling job.
