The Royal College of Paediatrics and Child Health (RCPCH) is seeking a highly motivated and detail-oriented Assistant Financial Accountant to support the financial accounting and compliance functions of the College.

This is an important role within the Finance team, supporting the College’s mission to improve child health by ensuring the integrity of financial information, robust financial controls, and compliance with statutory and regulatory requirements.

Working closely with the Financial Accountant and wider finance team, you will take responsibility for key accounting processes including payroll, tax, treasury management, and monthly financial reconciliations. You will play a vital role in maintaining accurate and timely financial records, supporting audit preparation, and ensuring that all financial operations run smoothly.

Key responsibilities include:

• Maintaining the integrity of financial systems and ensuring accurate, timely accounting entries and reconciliations
• Supporting the Financial Accountant in preparing key balance sheet reconciliations, including fixed assets, investments, accruals, prepayments and deferred income
• Assisting with internal and external audit processes and the preparation of group statutory accounts

The Bike Project is an award-winning charity which refurbishes second hand bikes and donates them to refugees.  We were founded in 2013 by, Jem Stein, after he struck up a friendship and found a bike for Adam, a Darfuri refugee who had fled his home in Sudan after war broke out.

The Bike Project has grown into a national operation with new CEO, hundreds of volunteers, a team of 20 committed staff, roadshows in different cities, an online shop and two workshops, one in the capital and one in Birmingham.

To date we have supported over 15,000 refugees and people seeking asylum by giving them a second-hand bike. In addition, we have supported hundreds through our programmes designed to build confidence and build friendships in the local community.

Duites and Responsibilities

This role oversees the securing and reporting of our Trusts and Foundation income, including working closely with colleagues to develop relevant, impactful and deliverable funding proposals and coordinate the stewardship of key trust and foundation relationships.

The role works closely with all colleagues to ensure a joined-up approach to income generation across the charity and our different supporter groups. 

Skills and Qualifications

The ideal candidate will have demonstrable experience in preparing and submitting successful funding applications and proposals to charitable trusts and foundations, with a track record of securing five and six figure gifts, ideally within the refugee’s sector. You will have experience of working with, and applying for funding from, some of the larger grant organisations.

We are looking to recruit a life skills and activities co-ordinator to concentrate on building and expanding relationships with young people living in our supported accommodation as well as families in Westminster who attend sessions in our Family Services department. This is a unique and rewarding role in our Employment & Learning Team that will involve meeting and working with residents in our supported accommodation on a one-to-one basis and in groups, facilitating activities and evaluating and building evidence that these interventions have made a difference. Your work will focus on supporting our residents (aged 16-25) on-site with their Life Skills development. You will also work holistically to support the families who attend sessions in the Family Centre and who attend outings and “away-days”. The role also requires facilitating our study club (aged 13+) and group ESOL sessions (19+).

• Extensive high value partnership experience in a charitable context, including 6 and 7 figure gifts.
• Proven experience of growing income and providing excellent stewardship, in at least two of the following areas, Trusts and Foundations, Corporates and Major Donors.
• Proven experience of identifying and cultivating new supporters and developing these into sustainable relationships.
• Proven experience of writing effective fundraising strategies, across a range of fundraising streams, including Major Donors, Trusts and Foundations, Corporate Partnerships, to achieve significant income growth.
• Proven experience in developing and delivering complex and diverse multi million pound annual and long-term budgets.
• Demonstrable experience of working with senior volunteers and colleagues to grow a high value program.

The Role

The team support local areas to use evidence to improve their services and outcomes for children and families. The Senior Practice Development Adviser will work with local leaders to support their decision-making on how to increase the availability of services and approaches that have evidence of improving child outcomes.

You will develop and deliver projects which increase the use of evidence in local services for children and families, in relation to the organisational priority areas, and provide senior input on service and practice development relevant to statutory social work and early intervention services. This will include working to encourage greater use of evidence in local service planning and delivery, supporting the generation of new evidence about what works, and liaising with national and local stakeholders to encourage and support evidence use.

About You

We are looking for someone with in depth understanding of UK policy, legislation and practice relating to children’s services, including how this responds to the needs of vulnerable and disadvantaged groups.

You will understand the role of evidence in improving local services and assessing their impact and be skilled in supporting others to engage with data and evidence

You will have experience of:

• Management of children’s social work and/or early intervention services, and an understanding of local multi-agency systems
• Working with local leaders and commissioners on service improvement or practice development in a relevant sector, for example children’s services, public health, or NHS
• Managing large and complex projects to time and budget
• Managing and motivating staff and non-staff teams.
