Role: Volunteer Facilities Assistant

Location: Our office in Peterborough Kings Chambers, 39-41 Priestgate, Peterborough PE1 1JL

Hours: At least one half-day per week (flexible)

We ask for volunteers to commit to at least 6 months and give notice of planned absences so cover can be arranged.

About the role:

This position will give you the opportunity to witness and learn first-hand about the work that goes on behind the scenes to support the delivery of our services and will provide you with the opportunity to be a part of a dynamic organisation with strong guiding values and a determination to make a difference.

The Volunteer Facilities Assistant will support the IT and Facilities Coordinator to ensure the smooth running of the Peterborough office and to support the delivery of high-quality services.

Building Maintenance

• Help deal with all minor repairs and maintenance requirements at our office in Peterborough.
• Ensure that the building security is maintained and that the relevant maintenance checks are performed
• Ensure the building is organised and tidy

Health and Safety  

• Ensure that Health & Safety requirements are met
• Ensure Fire Safety requirements are met, including carrying out regular checks to fire alarm, emergency lights and fire extinguishers

General Admin

• Order and distribute stationery and other supplies

Ensure post and other deliveries are opened and distributed to relevant staff members

Commitment

• Attendance at our induction training and completion of relevant mandatory online training
• Agree to complete an Enhanced DBS check
• Have a good line of clear communication 
• Adherence to CPSL Mind’s Code of Conduct and policies and procedures

Location: Remote (Online via Google Meet)

Structure: We provide guidance, resources, and ongoing support, but there is no fixed curriculum.

Mentees: You will be paired with a small group of mentees (typically 6–9), aged 18–26, all fluent in English.

Scheduling: Mentors arrange sessions directly with mentees at mutually convenient times.

Who We’re Looking For

We welcome professionals from a wide range of industries. Our current mentors come from backgrounds including law, mental health, business, civil engineering, and architecture. Each mentor is carefully matched with students pursuing similar career paths to ensure meaningful and relevant engagement.

You do not need formal mentoring experience. We are seeking dedicated, emotionally intelligent, and inspirational professionals from around the world who bring real-world experience, strong communication skills, and empathy, and who are passionate about helping others grow.

This is not a traditional mentorship programme — it is a structured pathway designed to help young Afghan women develop the academic and professional skills needed to move forward despite the severe restrictions placed on them inside Afghanistan.

Applicants should hold either a master’s degree or a bachelor’s degree with at least 10 years of professional experience. They should demonstrate emotional intelligence, clarity in communication, and the ability to guide, inspire, and challenge thoughtfully. A reliable internet connection is also essential.

Our students have completed six levels of English and are now enrolled in one of four mentorship semesters. Each mentee follows her own unique path, whether:

• Pursuing an online university degree,

• Applying for scholarships abroad (Europe or the US), or

• Seeking remote work or internships (particularly for qualified professionals currently unable to work inside Afghanistan).

This is an opportunity to make a tangible, life-changing impact. The women in our programme are courageous, determined, and eager to learn, yet they lack access to role models and practical guidance from professionals in their fields.

As a mentor, you will help them take the next step, n whether that means applying for scholarships, building a career portfolio, or gaining the confidence and professional skills to work remotely.

Our long-term goal is to move towards a 1:1 mentor-to-student ratio, ensuring that each young woman receives the personalised support she deserves.

Action Tutoring is a national education charity that offers free maths and English tutoring to pupils facing disadvantage. 

By volunteering as a tutor at a local school or online, you'll be supporting children to build their confidence and help ensure they leave school with the grades needed to build a bright future.

What will I be doing?

• Tutoring 1-3 pupils in Year 5 or 6, or Year 7, 10 or 11.

• Commit to one hour a week, for up to 20 weeks. You choose the day and time to sign up to.

• Use our tutor workbooks to guide your pupils through activities that will boost their confidence and grades.

Learn to Love to Read offers one-to-one support to children who find learning to read challenging, in schools and online via Zoom.Our In-school volunteers are asked to commit 90 minutes, one afternoon a week, usually between 1-3 pm.
Our virtual volunteers are asked to commit 30-60 minutes, one afternoon a week, usually between 4-6 pm.

Full training and ongoing support is provided for all volunteers to provide them with a framework which supports children's reading skills, while also building their self-esteem, confidence and love of reading. Our volunteers support the same children each week, providing 20 minutes of one-to-one support for the whole academic year. This ensures a consistent and rewarding experience for both the volunteer and the children.

In Wandsworth, post-COVID, 20% of Key Stage 1 and 25% of Key Stage 2 children did not reach the expected standard of reading in summer 2025. Low literacy is linked to poverty and social exclusion, limiting options in life. Early literacy intervention is crucial to break this cycle. School closures due to COVID-19 have been tough for children from disadvantaged families.
 

Please note we only work with schools in the London borough of Wandsworth and all our volunteers need to live in or within easy reach of that borough. 

In line with Safer Recruitment, all applicants are asked to complete an application form, provide references, take part in a face-to-face interview and ID check, and attend online training which includes safeguarding. All volunteers must have an enhanced DBS check which we arrange on your behalf. You will also be required to obtain checks from any country in which you've lived for more than three months from the age of 16 in line with Wandsworth's guidance. Treasurer and Bookkeeper Volunteer

What the role involves:

A support group treasurer and bookkeeper take on specific roles and responsibilities in the managing and reporting of the group’s finances.  One volunteer can do both roles or two volunteers can work together, dividing responsibilities.  The key tasks are:

Bookkeeper:

• Digital recording of all group income and expenditure using a monthly account spreadsheet
• Submit monthly accounts to the Stroke Association together with receipts and paying in slips
• Have access to the group’s online bank account to pay invoices
• Prepare a financial summary for the annual review meeting of the group 
• Liaise closely with the group treasurer (where the role is split)
• Aware of the Stroke Association financial guidelines
• Work together with the Stroke Association’s Finance Administrator

Treasurer/card holder:

• Manage the groups prepaid card
• Oversee the day to day income and expenditure, using the group’s pre-paid card and petty cash 
• Have access to the group’s online bank account to pay invoices
• Ensure all expenses and invoices are paid on time
• Bank any cash or cheques with the Barclays deposit card 
• Each month collate receipts, invoices, volunteer claims and registers of all group income and expenditure and email to the bookkeeper (where the role is split) Liaise closely with the book keeper (where the role is split) 
• Ensure the group follows the Stroke Association’s financial guidelinesWork with fellow volunteers to ensure the group spends in line with the charitable objectives and financial information is transparent 
• Work together with the Stroke Association’s Finance Administrator

Skills, attitude and experience needed

Bookkeeper:

• Good numerical skills and able to maintain clear and accurate financial records
• Able to use basic excel and send emails. You will need access to your own computer or device to do this role.

What the role can offer you personally:

As a treasurer and bookkeeper, you will play a significant role in supporting and developing a welcoming community for people affected by stroke.  The role provides an opportunity to engage with your local community and meet new people.  You can be part of volunteering team that provides support, information, reassurance and motivation in rebuilding lives. 

Many of our treasurer, cardholders and bookkeepers say that this role is a great way to engage with, and support, their local community.  They feel like they are making a difference and giving something back.

It also offers you a chance gain and develop professional skills, by volunteering with a well-respected charity.

Training for this role:

We provide all of our support group treasurers, cardholders and bookkeepers with training so they feel confident in the role and give the best possible support to stroke survivors.  All training is over Zoom.

Essential training that you need to undertake for this role is:

• The Stroke Association’s People welcome session (2.5 hours over Learn)
• GDPR (online module over Learn and factsheet)
• Safeguarding training (online module over Learn)
• Finance training modules (total of 3 hours)

We also offer ongoing support and expenses where appropriate.

Where and when you would volunteer:

The bookkeeper can be a remote role, supporting the financial running of a group from your home for approximately 2 hours per month.  As you are not going to the group, you do not need to do the safeguarding training.  You’ll need to do the other essential training though.

The treasurer/cardholder is usually a face to face role, one which requires attending the group sessions for sometimes up to 2 hours a week.  This will depend on how often your local group meets.

Emetophobia Action is a UK-based charity dedicated to supporting individuals affected by emetophobia (the fear of vomiting). We work to raise awareness, provide reliable information, and campaign for better understanding and treatment within healthcare and educational settings.

Key responsibilities

Student Minds Trustees are expected to commit to the following: 

• Preparation and attendance at four board meetings a year. Board meetings are held online and take place on weekdays from 5 - 7.30 pm. 

• Preparation and attendance at two board away days each year, usually from 12.30 - 5 pm. Board away days are in person and usually take place in Leeds. Travel expenses can be claimed.

• Ad-hoc meetings and conversations with the senior management team as required. This usually constitutes approximately a further five working days a year.

If appointed, you will receive the training and onboarding you need to be a confident, contributing member of the board. We are also able to provide you with a board buddy to support you in your first few months.

At RSPCA Buckinghamshire South Branch, our charity shops are looking for friendly, local volunteers to join our team and help make our shops in Chesham and Burnham a huge success. Make new friends, have fun, and help us help more animals!

As a volunteer Charity Shop Assistant, you would join a small team working with the shop manager and 1-2 other volunteers to help make it a success and raise vital funds for animal welfare.

• Retail experience would be ideal but is not necessary as full training will be given.

• We are ideally aiming for someone who is flexible and can offer an ongoing commitment predominately 8 hours or more per week.

• Good communication and numeracy skills.

• You will need to be aged 16 or over.
