Senior Media and Campaign Manager

Contract: Fixed term contract for approximately seven months maternity leave cover. With either part time of 4 days (28 hours) per week or full time (35 hours per week) options available.

Ideal start date: 24 June 2024 to provide up to two weeks hand over with the current post holder.

• Take an active role in reputation management for Hospice UK and develop and maintain their public position statements for key topics to support consistency of message.
• Advise on public campaign strategy and content while leading the representation of the charity's policy and political work to secure maximum impact across their digital channels.
• Develop audience-led channel content strategies to engage and keep informed the charity's membership and professional audiences and spot potential opportunities for public mobilisation work.
• Manage constructive and strategic relationships with journalists across the national media, placing stories regularly and briefing them on the latest developments.

• Oversee and improve operations of the press office function including running core services such as media monitoring.

Hospice UK are looking for someone who is collaborative, has superb news judgement and who is able to pivot quickly from project to project and story to story. You'll need a softness of touch when working with storytellers and hospice colleagues, and the patience and pragmatism to work with internal and external colleagues. You'll need to be decisive, and able to explain complex decisions to journalists and senior management. As well as strong media relations skills, we're looking for someone with a wider understanding of the full communications and marketing mix, and who will have some oversight and strategic control of the charity's digital channels.

Person Specification

About the role

This is an exciting role within the Volunteering Team. You’ll have responsibility for designing and piloting Shelter’s financial resilience volunteer programme in Leeds as well as supporting our nationwide volunteering programme. We’ll rely on you to use best practice volunteer management to design and pilot volunteering journeys from attraction, recruitment and training all the way through to ongoing support and exit. Shooting Star Children’s Hospices

Shooting Star Children’s Hospices are a leading children’s hospice charity caring for babies, children and young people with life-limiting conditions, and their families. We support families across Surrey and Southwest London from diagnosis to end of life and throughout bereavement with a range of nursing, practical, emotional and medical care.

At the heart of the hospice are our dedicated clinical staffs. Their exceptional commitment and professionalism is commented on by so many of the supported children and their families. 

It costs £10.5 million a year to maintain our current level of care. Only 30% of that income comes from government funding via the NHS or local authorities, so we rely on our supporters’ generosity to keep the service running. We employ 175 staff, including 98 nursing and medical staff, providing hospice and community-based services to around 700 families.

Predominantly we work with families living in the Northwest and Southwest of London and Surrey, although will accept children outside these geographical areas if they do not have access to specialist palliative care support locally.  We have a reputation for delivering high quality care.  We have a CQC rating of ‘Outstanding’

 

Introduction

Retail and Volunteers Team: Our Retail and Volunteers Team manages our charity shops and volunteer programs, which play a crucial role in supporting our mission. They recruit, train, and coordinate volunteers to staff our shops and assist with various tasks, such as sorting donations and serving customers. Additionally, they oversee the operations of our retail outlets, ensuring that they are efficiently run to generate income for our hospices.

Part 1: Job Profile

 

a) Main purpose of  job

In the absence of the manager or assistant managers to lead a team of volunteers to maximise sales, deliver excellent customer service and ensure that the shop premises and assets are maintained to a high standard, according to legal requirements and Shooting Star Children’s Hospices (SSCH) policies and procedures. 

Decision Making Authority

The post holder will be required to make decisions on the quality, and suitability of donations before they are placed on sale. Depending on the length of the cover period they may be required to dress the windows. (They will follow price guidelines and existing display layout throughout the shop.)

The post holder will work with eCommerce Manager to decide if items would be suitable for selling at a higher price on eBay or through a promotional event and set these aside for the manager of the shop to deal with on their return.

Part 2: Main duties and key responsibilities

 

a) Customer Service – 25%

• Dealing with customer queries and complaints courteously and effectively

• Informing the Head of Volunteer Development and Retail of any serious incidents or complaints

• Ensure that any refunds are processed in line with SSCH refunds policy

• Ensure that the advertised trading hours of the shop are adhered to

• Ensure relevant documents are completed in the event of an incident/accident and reported accordingly

b) Processing donations – 25%

• Process all donations as soon as possible, prioritising Gift Aid and high value items

• Prepare and clean items appropriately for display

• Oversee the recycling and arranging of collections

• Promote Gift Aid is at all available opportunities

• Ensure that the ongoing need for donations is publicised

• Price and ticket all items according to pricing strategy for the shop and ensure that all pricing and ticketing complies with legislation

• Ensure that stock is properly managed and rotated in accordance with latest guidance

• Identify high value or specialist items that may need to be sold in another capacity

c) Merchandising, display and promotion of stock, maintenance of high standards throughout the shop – 20%

Overview of Role:

As a Support Worker, you will be working with young people aged 12-25 years old who have experience of self-harm. Within that age group, you will predominantly be working with young people under 18. The post would suit an experienced support worker, preferably with knowledge of the issues experienced by young people who are trans / non-binary.

You will play a key role in providing them with support and advocacy both on a one to-one basis and within a group setting; working with them to develop their emotional skills which will allow them to cope more effectively with the difficulties in their lives. The nature of the work means role that the successful candidate must focus on inclusivity for the young people.

The successful candidate will have considerable experience in working with young people aged 12-25 and will enjoy the challenge of working with adolescents in difficult circumstances. You will need to be able to work within a non-discriminatory framework, ensuring the services are provided in a qualitative, responsive, and accessible manner.

The Amber Project exists to support any young person (aged 14-25) in Cardiff and the surrounding areas who has experience of self-harm. With our Constellation element working with young people aged 12-25. Since The Amber project was established in 2002 individual support and creative
workshops have been key elements of our work with young people.

Salary: £13,406 per annum (£26,812.00 per annum FTE).

Hours:  20 hours per week. Working pattern to be agreed with the line manager but will include late afternoons and early evenings to facilitate meeting with young people outside of school hours and attending workshops. Occasional weekends.

You will manage, develop and market Hospital Discharge and Health & Wellbeing Services in Bromley and Greenwich and work in partnership with other providers. · To have oversight of the monthly and quarterly reports for the services

· The work will include some on call responsibilities on evenings and weekends for the Hospital Discharge Services which an extra payment will be made.

Responsibilities

Some of the key areas of responsibility for this role are outlined below:

Cleaning & Room Setup

• Ensuring the buildings and grounds at HT are clean, tidy and ready to be used for our different mid-week events and for our Sunday services, liaising with our contract cleaners and carrying out cleaning duties yourself
• Setting up for events and services, moving tables / chairs etc as needed
• Litter picking externally and ensuring our grounds are well presented and well-maintained
• Keeping note of stocks of cleaning materials, and ordering more as needed
• Ensuring our stocks of clean laundry are always sufficient, sending and receiving laundry and liaising with our laundry contractor as needed

Kitchens

• Keeping our commercial kitchens clean and tidy and overseeing record keeping
• Understanding and ensuring compliance with our requirements under the Safer Food
• Better Business food safety management procedures
• Ensuring our kitchen equipment is well maintained and arranging annual gas safety checks
• Carrying out daily checks
• Keeping track of levels of cleaning supplies and ordering more as needed

Fire Safety

• Carrying out weekly fire alarm tests
• Carrying out other regular tests and checks, such as emergency lighting tests & fire door seal tests

Health & Safety

• Understanding and ensuring compliance under the COSHH regulations
• Regularly checking and re-stocking first aid kits

General Maintenance & Ad Hoc

• Performing maintenance tasks as required, such as painting, gardening etc
• Moving items as need between our buildings and off-site storage unit
