Role Title: External Communications and Advocacy Lead
This is a rare opportunity to shape the new communications function in a thriving cancer charity, establishing Shine as the go-to charity supporting all young adults living with any type of cancer in the UK.
Responsible to: Co-CEOs
Location: Hybrid, with two to three days per week at Shine’s offices in Blackheath, Southeast London.
Hours & salary: Full time (35 hours per week). Salary range is £39,000 - £43,000pa depending on experience. This is a permanent job with a three-month probation period.

Main purpose of the role:

As part of our growth plan, we are delighted to be hiring our first Communications and Advocacy Lead. Working on our external communications strategy to build authority and be the go-to voice for younger adults (aged 20 to 49 years) living with cancer, this person will be responsible for managing all external communications. In addition, will work closely with the rest of the Shine team to ensure consistent external messaging.
Key Responsibilities
These include:
● Develop implementation plans to support Shine’s communications strategy to build authority in the cancer support space.
● Responsible for developing the Shine narrative, brand voice, and talking points to support external stories and campaigns, and to co-create fundraising messages with the Fundraising Manager and Fundraising Consultant.
● Responsible for all external communications with media including national and regional outlets, print and broadcast, digital channels and titles read by healthcare professionals.
● Supervision of the social media output from Shine, ensuring consistency with the overall communications plan.
● Ability to represent Shine at external stakeholder meetings.
● Working closely with the Shine team to raise Shine’s profile through advocacy activities in the cancer community and healthcare professionals.
● Work with Shine co-CEOs to develop their external profiles through thought-leadership, speaker and advocacy platforms.
Person Specification
Essential skills:
● Ability to develop multi-channel communications plans, using social, digital and traditional media platforms
● Knowledge of UK health media including health correspondents and reporters for national news outlets (print & TV and radio)
● A good eye for design, with the ability to manage, develop and implement brand guidelines
● Experience of working with media databases and press release distribution services
● Excellent writing skills and experience of writing materials for media
● Ability to create media angles and stories from data and third-party content
● Identify platforms for Shine thought-leadership, particularly for the co-CEOs
● Strong skills in using online technology platforms including Google workspace, Canva, YouTube and MS Office.
Desirable skills:
● Experience of working alongside expert suppliers including design and content, public relations agencies and consultants.
● Experience of managing projects remotely, including using tools such as Asana.
Core competencies:
● Empathy - understanding of the issues faced by the young adults (20-49 yrs.) living with cancer
● Attention to detail -must deliver accurate content to a high standard
● Self-directed - must be able to work independently and make strategic recommendations to Shine co-CEOs on all aspects of Shine communications

About the role

About the role:
The Floating Support Worker will specialise in working with women for whom housing, and risk of tenancy breakdown is a priority. You will provide specialist housing and domestic abuse support to women aged 18 and over. The accommodation needs of the women you support will require you to advocate and support for each woman efficiently and empathically, whilst liaising with providers and stakeholders to ensure her accommodation needs are met. The role is dynamic and requires the post holder to respond to women with effective crisis intervention, advocacy and support. They will be required to coordinate the provision of multiagency support which focuses on working with clients to maintain their tenancies and prevent homelessness. The post holder will establish positive, proactive, and innovative working relationships with housing services and partner agencies.
The Floating Support Worker will ensure that the women survivors views and needs inform every stage of the process, and so the post holder will be empathic, empowering and able to advocate for women. You will also share your learning with your team, Advance and other stakeholders to ensure best practice is consistently achieved.
Working as part of a team of Floating Support Workers, you will make proactive contact and provide high quality non-judgemental advocacy and support based upon a client led needs and risk assessment. You will be responsible for a number of women at a time and you will be their designated and consistent support worker. You will also support women and referrers at the first stage of referral by completing assessments and providing crisis intervention support as part of a ‘duty’ team with designated days for you to do this.
The Floating Support Worker will have an excellent understanding of domestic violence and its effects on women and children and of best practice within the domestic abuse and the housing sectors. As an experienced domestic abuse advocate who has worked with complex and multiple needs, you will be skilled in risk management and safety planning, remaining calm in a crisis and in handling sensitive information appropriately.
Experience of supporting female survivors of domestic violence with housing and accommodation needs, in partnership with other organisations, and of safeguarding procedures is essential for this post.
Key Responsibilities and Duties
· Create effective working partnerships with housing service providers and the local council to promote the Floating Support Worker Service
· Provide information, guidance and support to referral stakeholders to enable them to identify women at risk of and experiencing domestic violence, enabling them to confidently respond and refer women to the service. This may include delivery of briefings and information sessions to upskill housing workers. To continuously build awareness of the service and confidence of stakeholders in order to ensure women in need are identified and supported
· Effectively support a number of women at any one time, undertaking case management activities such as excellent assessments, action planning, referrals, and record keeping
· Conduct comprehensive assessments of needs and risk for women experiencing domestic violence, carry out short- and longer-term risk management, safety planning and support; and identify and refer to services appropriate to their needs, including attendance at specialist/dedicated courts and MARAC as required
· Develop and deliver support plans that include delivery of high-quality face to face or telephone crisis intervention, information, advocacy and support, in respect to criminal and civil remedies, housing, health, welfare rights, children’s legislation and other appropriate interventions. Ensure that focus on safe tenancy sustainment and homelessness prevention underpins all work
· Advise women of their rights and options for seeking help and support from other agencies, making referrals and co-ordinating the provision of multi-agency support where necessary, and proactively advocate ensuring barriers to accessing support and protection are minimised
· Proactively assess the needs and safety of any children that women using the service may have, ensure that any risks/needs identified are addressed directly with the woman, and take appropriate action to safeguard them
· Proactively assess the needs and safety of women at risk proactively following Adult at Risk policies and procedures
· Participate in multi-agency conferences in respect of children and adults at risk as required, providing reports and undertaking actions as necessary
· Ensure all monitoring and evaluation for each woman, all cases and the project overall is accurate and up to date. Work in partnership with your team and the Advance Insights and Evidence team to ensure all reporting requirements are met. Highlight issues and successes in a timely manner
· Ensure that agreed case recording and monitoring systems are kept up to date and secure, and write internal and external reports where required, including for safeguarding conferences, team meetings, managers and other appropriate partners and stakeholders
· Participate in multi-agency working and focus groups when requested to do so and follow through on agreed appropriate actions that arise from these
· Work effectively as a member of your own team and as a team member of Advance supporting all organisational objectives
· Work in partnership with housing staff and provide institutional advocacy to maximise positive outcomes and use the appropriate reporting mechanisms to highlight persistent or recurring issues that arise

The Landscape Recovery team was set up as a response to the urgency of the inextricably linked nature and climate emergencies. The purpose of this team is to encourage and facilitate cross-Wildlife Trust action on landscape scale recovery, inject the rewilding approaches into the work of the Wildlife Trusts, coordinate land management activities where scale-economies are clear and to substantially increase funding for nature’s recovery across the Wildlife Trusts. The team is developing a range of programmes where RSWT acts as a ‘collective vehicle’ for groups of Trusts. For example, RSWT is leading a programme of peatland restoration through the Precious Peatlands project. Opportunities for such programmes are increasing – the UK is at a tipping point where either wildlife continues to decline or we finally grasp the opportunities of nature’s recovery.
About You
Working closely with colleagues at the Royal Society of Wildlife Trusts and with Local Wildlife Trusts, the Land Management Practice Officer will support The Wildlife Trusts Nature Reserves community of practice. This role will focus primarily, in the first instance, on supporting local Wildlife Trusts to reduce their pesticide use.

GENUINE OCCUPATIONAL REQUIREMENT

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
Team Supervision:
- Oversee the working practices of night staff to ensure high standards are maintained.
- Conduct regular meetings with direct reports for supervision and support, handling disciplinary or performance issues as needed.
- Carry out the induction and training of new staff and volunteers, and participate in team appraisals.

Resident Support:
- Participate in annual safeguarding training for children and adults and act as Designated Safeguarding Lead (Level 3).
- Provide emotional and practical support to distressed residents, fostering development and independence.
- Ensure the resident’s records are accurately maintained and updated.

Compliance and Safety:
· Ensure adherence to all health and safety and safeguarding policies.
· Report any incidents or concerns to the Night and Weekend Manager promptly.
Administrative Duties:
· Assist in updating internal management information systems (e.g., INFORM) with relevant data.
· Support basic rent account management tasks as needed.
· Help coordinate staff schedules and cover arrangements for night shifts.
· Monitor and report on stock levels of essential supplies used during night shifts.
· Participate in occasional meetings or training sessions outside regular hours to stay informed about organisational updates.
· Ensure all administrative practices comply with MPMT’s policies and procedures.

Qualifications

Duties and responsibilities:
- Process and monitor Criminal Record Checks for our employees and contractors.
- Process employee changes, following relevant procedures.
- Update and enter information on various systems, ensuring a high level of data quality is maintained.
- Monitor data reports and ensure compliance with key processes.
- Work collaboratively with our wider teams, including our Talent Acquisition, People Partnering, IT, and Payroll.
- Signposting employees and managers to relevant policies and information.
- Comply with data protection regulations.
