What you'll do

Policy & Influencing

• Develop accessible and compelling policy briefings, consultation responses, reports, speeches, and presentations for a range of stakeholders, including MPs, government officials, and sector partners.
• Translate complex ideas into clear, persuasive communications that support positive change.
• Collaborate with our Youth Voice Manager to ensure our policy positions reflect the real experiences of the young people and families we support.
• Help deliver and monitor our policy and influencing strategy in collaboration with the Head of Policy, Voice and Influencing.

Research & Evidence

• Carry out high-quality research and analysis from both internal and external sources.
•  Centre the experiences and insights of disabled children, young people, and their families in policy solutions
• Monitor policy developments across the SEND landscape and lead on timely, evidence-led responses.
• Track progress against our influencing goals and ensure our actions remain targeted and impactful.

Engagement & Relationship Building

• Build strong relationships with decision-makers across government and the public sector.
• Support the Head of Policy, Voice and Influencing to plan and deliver our strategic external engagement plan in order to focus and drive our wider influencing work
• Represent Kids at meetings and events, including engaging MPs, civil servants, and other key influencers.
• Work closely with internal teams and front-line colleagues to ensure our influencing work is grounded in practice and informed by those delivering services.

Collaboration & Strategic Partnerships

• Work alongside the Head of Policy, Voice and Influencing and Youth Voice Manager to deliver our external engagement strategy including deputising at meetings when required.
• Support collaboration across teams to bring in parent, carer, and young person voices.
• Contribute to external coalitions and alliances – attending meetings, aligning with others’ work, and championing Kids' policy priorities.

• Proven experience in a policy role and demonstrable experience of using policy and evidence to influence outcomes– ideally within the disability sector.
• Strong understanding of the SEND system and related policies and legislation (through lived or professional experience).

The post holder will lead the development of the Hub, situated on the periphery of central Birmingham, serving the community of the Woodview estate, supporting the Oasis Academy and wider local community. In September 2024, National Numeracy launched a new ‘Schools & Families’ programme to support Primary School staff, parents and carers in increasing pupils’ confidence with numbers, positive feelings about maths, and awareness of the value of maths outside of the classroom. The programme also works to improve parents’, carers’, and school staff’s own confidence with numbers and with supporting children with their maths.

The programme has been hugely successful and is growing rapidly – we have now secured funding to deliver activity in all four nations of the UK and we are working with almost 300 schools currently.

The Schools & Families Programme Officer will support the Schools & Families Programme Manager in managing fast-paced activity across the UK, particularly delivering online training directly to school staff, recruiting schools, and visiting selected schools to ensure the success of the programme.

We are looking for someone who can support with this dynamic activity, is flexible, able to manage their time, and willing to adapt to the changing needs of the charity. National Numeracy has an office in Falmer near Brighton, in East Sussex, but the expectation for this role is that you will be based at home, travelling occasionally as needed across the UK.

Public Affairs Manager (Fixed term contract)

Salary: £34,237pa

Your purpose 

This is a critical role in the Communications, Campaigns and Public Affairs Department. As Public Affairs Manager, you will support the Head of Communications, Campaigns and Public Affairs to make oracy education ordinary, co-ordinating and  project managing and delivering public affairs work as well as leading public relations work that increases our profile with policy makers. In doing so, you will play  an integral role in ensuring all children, regardless of their background, find their voice for success in school  and in life.

Your responsibilities 

This is a senior role in the Communications, Campaigns and Public Affairs Department, as part of the wider Learning, Impact and Influence Directorate 

Public Affairs (80%)

• Drive forward Voice 21’s public affairs strategy, building key relationships, understanding and momentum that develops Voice 21’s influence with Government and non-parliamentary policy makers, ensuring that we have a meaningful role in shaping an oracy entitlement for every child, and appropriate mechanisms for its implementation

• Deliver Public Affairs business as usual work, for example; organising school visits, leading political and parliamentary monitoring, stakeholder mapping and horizon-scanning and organising events in parliament and at party conferences

• Work with policy makers on local, regional and national level to influence those responsible for the delivery of education at primary and secondary level

• Engage and manage stakeholders and other key people across and beyond the organisation who work with the Learning, Impact and Influence directorate to leverage relationships in pursuit of our organisational strategy and mission

• Lead on Voice 21’s role as secretariat to the Oracy All-Party Parliamentary Group (APPG) 

• Produce/co-produce consultation responses, blogs, internal and external briefings, parliamentary questions and other related communications in line with our content strategy

• Act as an internal expert consultant on public affairs, decision makers and implementation of our agenda

Public Relations (20%) 

• Deliver public relations activity to raise our profile and support our brand, including through awards, events and speaking engagements 

• Spotting reactive communications opportunities in line with the public affairs strategy 

Your progression

Within 1 month, you’ll have:

• Started building strong working relationships with the team, warm policy makers and sector partners

• Created a database of influential head teachers

• Helped refine our policy asks in key areas into easy-to-communicate goals

Within 3 months, you’ll have: 

• Used analysis and polling to build reports on key advocate groups who can help spread our messages

• Launched our Oracy APPG

• Refined our monitoring and reactive opportunity spotting systems

From 6 months onwards, we expect for you to be:

• Have worked with our research team to develop a literature review of oracy education policy at local and national level

• Migrated our contract tracking to Salesforce and expanded it to capture relationships help at local and national levels

• Having developed a public profile among education policy makers

The Opportunity:   

The Aspiring Professionals Programme Coordinator (APPC) role will be well-suited to someone who is focused on the best ways they can help the aims of the charity as well as those of our participants and partners. An APPC is responsible for supporting the delivery and development of the Social Mobility Foundation’s programme of activities for young people through their S5-6/sixth form and university years.   
The SMF offers in-person and online support and opportunities, so this role will involve providing virtual and in-person support to students and working with employers across the UK.

Key Responsibility Areas:
1. Project Delivery 

• Deliver key projects including recruiting and onboarding students, creating digital resources and student events  
• Support with programme pilots, scoping (and delivering on) new activity   
• Collaborate and build relationships with our employer partners, schools, and universities to support our young people in their applications for university, internships and graduate roles  

 2. Monitoring and Evaluation  

• Maintain accurate records across relevant databases, updating data accurately and in a timely manner  
• Contribute to evaluation for key work areas (residentials, events, internships etc), produce high quality evaluation reports where required.

3. Stakeholder Management

• Communicate to internal and external stakeholders in a timely and professional manner  
• Proactively update external partners (i.e. employers) on your work areas, flagging risks in a timely manner with relationship managers  
• Manage internal student queries and maintain consistent stakeholder (e.g. students) processes through regular communication  

4. Activity Delivery  

• Coordinate planning and delivery of skills sessions, partner events, university visits, and other activities, both virtually and in person across the Social Mobility Foundation’s target cities across the UK

Ways of working:

• Most of our work is office based, but you will spend a lot of time collaborating with other teams and clients via email, telephone and other communications channels such as Teams or Zoom.  
• This role requires you to staff residentials for students on our Programme. This means that during the summer period (Jul – Aug) you will be expected to stay overnight on-site (in the UK - exact location to be confirmed closer to the time) for a period of up to two-weeks, help run the residential and be responsible for the welfare of the young people involved.

Travel:

• Some travel, to other offices and other locations, will occasionally be expected.

About The Role
We are recruiting for a Senior Participant Experience Manager to join on a part-time basis, working 21 hours per week (0.6 FTE) as part of a job share. This is a fixed-term contract until the end of October 2026.

This is a fantastic opportunity to join our successful Events team, co-leading our 7-person Participant Experience team. Working closely with the other Senior Participant Experience Manager, you’ll be jointly responsible for identifying and delivering strategic projects and multi-channel supporter journeys to improve the supporter experience for all events participants, resulting in maximised income, retention and lifetime value.

You and your team will work across the Events team, adding value to our participants’ experience across our full range of products, from sign up to thanking and beyond. You’ll lead the team to drive cross product testing, learning and innovation. You will also maximise the impact of our communications across multiple channels, such as telephone, email, post, SMS, whilst pushing efficiencies by streamlining processes and ways of working across teams.

Working as part of the Events Management team you will contribute to the strategy and direction of the wider Events team.

About you
We’re looking for a strategic thinker who has a strong background in stewardship and customer experience with an understanding of the charity sector.

About the role

This is a unique and exciting opportunity to help deliver SSAFA volunteer support to the serving community.

You will work closely with the Serving Community Manager to develop SSAFA’s support to the serving community through its volunteer delivered Serving Community Teams and the Community Volunteering Service.

Your role will be to ensure a safe and quality service is delivered by volunteers, and support them from the recruitment and induction stage through to becoming a fully trained volunteer.
