Role Title: External Communications and Advocacy Lead
This is a rare opportunity to shape the new communications function in a thriving cancer charity, establishing Shine as the go-to charity supporting all young adults living with any type of cancer in the UK.
Responsible to: Co-CEOs
Location: Hybrid, with two to three days per week at Shine’s offices in Blackheath, Southeast London.
Hours & salary: Full time (35 hours per week). Salary range is £39,000 - £43,000pa depending on experience. This is a permanent job with a three-month probation period.

Main purpose of the role:
A rare opportunity to shape the new communications function in a thriving cancer charity and to establish its reputation as the go-to charity supporting all young adults living with any type of cancer in the UK.
As part of our growth plan, we are delighted to be hiring our first Communications and Advocacy Lead. Working on our external communications strategy to build authority and be the go-to voice for younger adults (aged 20 to 49 years) living with cancer, this person will be responsible for managing all external communications. In addition, will work closely with the rest of the Shine team to ensure consistent external messaging.
Key Responsibilities
These include:
● Develop implementation plans to support Shine’s communications strategy to build authority in the cancer support space.
● Responsible for developing the Shine narrative, brand voice, and talking points to support external stories and campaigns, and to co-create fundraising messages with the Fundraising Manager and Fundraising Consultant.
● Responsible for all external communications with media including national and regional outlets, print and broadcast, digital channels and titles read by healthcare professionals.
● Supervision of the social media output from Shine, ensuring consistency with the overall communications plan.
● Ability to represent Shine at external stakeholder meetings.
● Working closely with the Shine team to raise Shine’s profile through advocacy activities in the cancer community and healthcare professionals.
● Work with Shine co-CEOs to develop their external profiles through thought-leadership, speaker and advocacy platforms.
Person Specification
Essential skills:
● Ability to develop multi-channel communications plans, using social, digital and traditional media platforms
● Knowledge of UK health media including health correspondents and reporters for national news outlets (print & TV and radio)
● A good eye for design, with the ability to manage, develop and implement brand guidelines
● Experience of working with media databases and press release distribution services
● Excellent writing skills and experience of writing materials for media
● Ability to create media angles and stories from data and third-party content
● Identify platforms for Shine thought-leadership, particularly for the co-CEOs
● Strong skills in using online technology platforms including Google workspace, Canva, YouTube and MS Office.

Interagency work
· Work to embed the Case Manager role into multi-agency responses to domestic abuse in the area.

ACCOUNTABILITY
The Communications Manager will report to the Leadership Team. Latin Link seeks to ensure that every member of our team has opportunities for developing and learning new skills relevant to their work.
TIME COMMITMENT AND FLEXIBILITY
We see this as essentially a full-time role, but we are open to a variety of flexible working arrangements to help the right person achieve a good work/life balance. The expectation is that the Communications Manager will be in the Reading office at least one day a week, with the flexibility to work from home the rest of the time.
SALARY
The full-time salary for this role will be £28,500 per annum. All salaries are reviewed on an annual basis with any increase made from 1st April.
The appointment is subject to the satisfactory completion of a six month probationary period, after which there is three months’ written notice period for both parties. Holiday entitlement for full time staff is 28 working days per year including all bank and public holidays. In addition to this we usually close for the period between Christmas Day and New Year.

Role Overview
The Film & TV Charity’s Looking Glass research on the mental health of the UK film, TV and cinema workforce has consistently shown that mental health and rates of loneliness at work are significantly worse in this sector than among the population as a whole. Further Charity research has also shown that the two are closely linked, strongly suggesting that tackling loneliness is vital part of the industry-wide fight to protect the mental health of the workforce.
As the Community Development Manager, you will use our research insights to help develop the Charity’s community strategy, managing a programme of work that seeks to embed social connection as a core mental health priority in the Charity’s work and among the wider industry. You will also deliver specific projects stemming from the community strategy. Foremost among these is the Charity’s Community Partnerships programme. This involves working with a cohort of peer and community-led industry support groups to meet the needs of their communities, primarily through regular events-based engagement at our Soho offices. But it may also involve contributing to the co-working space offer at our offices in Soho, and to the Charity’s research on themes related to loneliness and social connection.
You will need to have experience of strategy development and partnerships or community management, and the excellent relationship management skills on which this depends. A background in developing mental or social wellbeing interventions is highly desirable, as is experience working in the film, television or creative industries. The Account and Support Manager will be responsible for working with the Upshot team to deliver high quality customer service to all clients. They will manage the implementation of the Upshot system for new clients, deal with customer support queries and manage contract renewals for existing clients.
