CANCER AWARENESS BANK NURSE - SOUTH-WEST ENGLAND (REGISTERED ADULT NURSE)

Location: Home-based in South-West England. This will cover anywhere from Watford to the South-West including Bristol, Bath, Southampton, Portsmouth, Poole, Bournemouth and Cornwall.

Working hours: We expect to offer a minimum of 8 shifts per year, but the average is between 8 and 48 shifts dependent on availability and willingness to travel. We are looking for a Bank Nurse to join our Cancer Awareness in the Workplace (CAW) team. You'll join a team of Bank Nurses that provides vital contingency cover where needed to Cancer Research UK's nurse-led face-to-face cancer awareness and health promotion activity across the UK.

In this role, you'll inform and empower people to make positive changes for their health and promote early diagnosis through providing face-to-face information in hard-to-reach audiences.

What will I be doing?

• Face-to-face delivery of the latest cancer prevention and early detection information in an appropriate and relevant way

• Delivering face to face cancer awareness activities for people at their place of work with our Cancer Awareness in the Workplace team - typically health information stands and occasionally short presentations

• Providing cover on the Cancer Awareness Roadshow, working alongside a small team to engage the public in indoor and outdoor community settings through individual face-to-face conversations

• Supporting other cancer awareness activities and Cancer Research UK events

• Representing Cancer Research UK in a positive and professional way and ensure that all information shared is in line with CRUK's core messages

• Responsible for collecting and inputting data for evaluation purposes and contributing to other general feedback

• Ensuring familiarity with local stats and local health information sheets to tailor activity and enable effective signposting to local services.

What skills are you looking for?

• Registered Adult Nurse - NMC registration is mandatory for this role and must always be maintained

• An interest in or experience of at least one of the following: health promotion, practice nursing, occupational health, health visiting, district/community nursing or other qualification/experience

• Excellent verbal communication skills - an ability to engage people in conversation and to use motivational interviewing techniques while ensuring accuracy of information conveyed

• Strong oral presentation skills, with the ability to convey clear and accurate information confidently and pitched appropriately for the audience

• A clear, demonstrable understanding of boundaries and of the importance and need for always adhering to data protection and other compliance policies

• Experience in delivering public-facing work, and a good understanding of the challenges associated with engaging hard to reach groups and addressing health inequalities

• Excellent written, administration and organisation skills with the ability to keep accurate confidential records

• Willingness to travel, including occasional unsocial hours work or overnight stays.

• We want everyone with Prader-Willi syndrome to get equal access to diagnosis and treatment no matter where in the world they live and to ensure better, more consistent outcomes for people with the syndrome and their families.

• Our membership comprises PWS associations in 47 countries and we support individual families and professionals in over 70 other countries.

Key Fundraising Responsibilities

• Develop communications content that will invigorate our existing donors and inspire new ones leading to increased giving by individuals to IPWSO.

About the role

Our West London Partnerships and Volunteer Recruitment Manager (P&VRM) works closely with P&VRMs in Herts and Surrey and our Communications team, to promote the MCR programme to organisations and individuals.  The purpose is to recruit committed volunteers who will mentor a young person in their school for one hour a week during term time. Shine has a membership of over 14,000 members living with Spina Bifida and/or Hydrocephalus and associated conditions and over 6,500 associated members.

Our Little Stars project for 0–12-year-olds has been established for over 5 years supporting younger members and their families with their diagnosis and beyond. We also have a growing Teen membership known as FIRE (Friendship, Independence, Resilience, Equality) Working alongside our multi skilled, established team, you will be supporting members across all age groups and building on the great foundations already in place. 

We are looking for an Early Intervention Project Worker who can cover the South of England, primarily you will be home based, supporting members through phone calls and using online platforms.  You will be required to attend clinics, events and meet members one to one where necessary within your allocated area and occasionally across wider areas and nationally. 

Purpose of the role 

• To deliver Shine's Little Stars (funded by The National Lottery Community Fund) project for 0–12-year-olds, supporting early years and younger members with their families, their diagnosis and beyond across the Southern Region. To provide advice, support and guidance to enable people with Spina Bifida and/or Hydrocephalus to access the correct benefits to become financially stable, the right services to improve their health and well-being, and to better co-ordinate their support and independence through a variety of methods. 

• To improve the life wellbeing of children 0-12 years old with spina bifida and/or hydrocephalus by promoting independence and providing them and their families with early intervention support. 

• To create a community whereby those affected by spina bifida and hydrocephalus can connect with others, are empowered through knowledge and feel confident in the support networks surrounding them.
