Job summary

The Communications and Marketing Manager plays a central role in helping Overcoming MS reach and support more people living with multiple sclerosis worldwide. The role leads the creation of compelling, evidence-based, and emotionally engaging communications that strengthen connections with our community, raise awareness of the Overcoming MS approach, support fundraising, engagement, and behaviour change, and showcase our services and offerings. 

Working across communications channels, campaigns, storytelling and community engagement, the postholder will enable our audiences to feel they have the appropriate level of information and confidence to make lifestyle changes, through the support we offer to live a full and healthy life with MS. 

Key responsibilities and duties: 
The role comprises the following key areas of responsibility: 

Communication and campaign creation 

• Craft engaging, accessible and audience-focused communications which inspire action, deepen engagement and build trust. 

• Plan and execute integrated marketing and communications campaigns across digital channels, print, PR and Community channels in alignment with our Fundraising and Communications Strategy.

• Support the Head of Communications, Marketing & Digital with campaign planning, aligning Communications objectives to organisational and income generation objectives. 

• Support the Services team with the promotion of our services, including the dissemination of insights and data, to grow our awareness and engagement 

• Support colleagues and audiences. Working with stakeholders to ensure communications are planned and delivered at the right time to meet their needs.

• Ability to communicate complex or sensitive information in a clear, accessible and empathetic way. 

• Understanding of inclusive and accessible communications best practice. 

Using results to drive change 

• Use audience insight, analytics and user behaviour to shape campaigns and improve engagement. 

• Test, learn and optimise marcomms communications through experimentation, AB testing and evaluation. 

• Contribute to Marcomms evaluation on performance and impact. 

Storytelling and Community voices  

• Build trusted relationships with people living with MS and the wider Overcoming MS community to develop authentic and inspiring stories. 

• Support contributors sensitively and ethically, ensuring appropriate consent and safeguarding processes are followed. 

• Identify opportunities to amplify community voices across campaigns, fundraising and communications. 

• Ensure storytelling reflects the diversity and inclusivity of the Overcoming MS community. 

Social media and content creation 

• Lead on building our impact and engagement on social media with our audiences, in line with our objectives, including supporting awareness and engagement campaigns and fundraising. 

• Ensure that we are using the best tools and techniques by staying up to date with trends. 

• Monitor social media, ensuring prompt and accurate responses to enquiries. 

• Use analytics to constantly optimise our social media impact. 

• Ensure content is accessible, audience-led and aligned with best practice in health communication. 

• Support content development across both digital and print communications where required. 

• Working closely with the services team, lead the content creation and maintenance of our website to maximise our impact with audiences. 

• Build and nurture relationships with celebrity ambassadors, influencers and public supporters. 

Email marketing 

• Develop content for email marketing, including for fundraising and events campaigns. 

• Optimise email by A/B testing content to maximise performance through design and content improvements, and creating triggered email sequences to build our message. 

• Use audience segmentation and personalisation to support campaigns. 

• Use analytics to identify ways to constantly optimise our email impact. 

Community Engagement 

• Support our digital community through different discussion groups and platforms (social media, hubs, etc). Including liaising with internal teams and promoting best practice. 

• Support online events and drive positive engagement opportunities.

Brand communication 

• Ensuring all activity aligns with brand priorities. 

• Championing on-brand messaging. Acting as a trusted expert on brand tone of voice.  

• Ensuring all media and communications guidelines/policies are followed and kept updated. 

• Sharing best practice with the wider organisation and continuing professional development.

Creative skills 

• Generate and develop creative and innovative ideas with a good eye for brand, design, film and photography.

• Develop clear briefs and oversee production of high-quality digital and printed communications materials. 

• Create engaging collateral through design software.

• Edit small amounts of audio or video (desirable). 

• Support content development across both digital and print communications where required. 

PR and Media 

• Support the Head of Communications, Marketing and Digital with media relations through press releases and statements. 

• Support with securing regional, national and international media coverage, sourcing case studies and creating campaign assets and messaging for media partners. 

 
PERSON SPECIFICATION 

• Self-motivated and adaptable/proactive, with strong organisational skills and the ability to manage competing priorities effectively

• A keen eye for detail with a consistently high quality of work output.

• Highly organised, able to manage a content schedule, and plan and deliver digital campaigns. Able to prioritise work across multiple projects to meet deadlines.

• Demonstrable experience in developing, leading and executing high-quality, effective communications and engagement strategies that achieve desired results.

• Excellent writing, editing and communication skills for social media, web, email and PR.

• Experience in managing and optimising website content, with strong on-page SEO skills.

You will have proven experience in fundraising, business development, or partnership management, with a track record of generating income and building strong external relationships. Ideally, you will have experience developing fundraising plans, pipelines, or income streams from an early stage, and will be comfortable working in an environment where processes, opportunities, and supporter journeys are still evolving.

PURPOSE OF THE ROLE 

We are looking for a confident, ambitious, and entrepreneurial Fundraising Manager to help grow sustainable income for Adoption UK by building and developing strong relationships with corporate partners, supporters, volunteers, and local communities.

MAIN DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

• Supported by the Director of Fundraising, take ownership of developing, delivering and monitoring fundraising events and activities in line with our fundraising strategy. 

• Lead on key income streams to maximise net income and develop sustainable income streams for short, medium and long-term growth. 

• Monitor and evaluate progress against plans using management information and budgets to produce reports and forecasts as required 

• Deliver effective supporter journeys to improve supporter experience, retention, and long-term engagement. 

• Work alongside the Director of Fundraising to develop and implement processes and policies.

Join SmellTaste and lead the development of the charity’s involvement in research, shaping how lived experience of those affected by smell and taste impairment is integrated in research projects. As Research Development and Engagement Manager, you will lead engagement with researchers, our patient community, and external partners to develop and support new research collaborations. This includes leading the Public and Patient Involvement activity for a 12-month National Institute of Health Research-funded Programme Development Grant, the ICAST Programme: Improving Care for patients with Smell & Taste Disorders, and undertaking planning work for the prospective Programme Grant which is expected to follow this.

This post is funded for 2 days (15 hours) per week for an initial 12-month period, with the potential for the contract to be extended and for it to become a full-time role subject to further funding being secured.

Key responsibilities

• Lead the SmellTaste contribution to a 12-month National Institute of Health Research-funded Programme Development Grant, led by Prof Carl Philpott at the University of East Anglia (the ICAST Programme: Improving Care for patients with Smell & Taste Disorders).  
• Develop a Patient and Public Involvement and Engagement (PPIE) strategy for the above project, including evaluation of impact and dissemination
• Manage a PPI panel for the NIHR project, organise PPIE meetings and ensure participants and panel members are remunerated for activity.
• Develop a detailed, costed delivery plan for the national survey element of the planned Programme Grant which is expected to follow on from the Programme Development Grant, including marketing and publicity, recruitment and dissemination.

Purpose of the role 

We are seeking a project coordinator to contribute research, project management and stakeholder management skills to support key projects advancing the consumer voice in the sustainability transition. This is a critical role in our team, and it comes with significant development opportunities. 

An initial focus will be supporting delivery of key workstreams in our Clean Energy Futures Programme, where our vision is for an affordable and accessible energy system in which all people can enjoy the benefits of increasingly clean, decentralised and interconnected energy. The Research and Events Coordinator will work alongside the Strategy and Projects Leads for Clean Energy Futures to manage engagement with the communities of practice that feed into our Clean Energy Futures work. This includes the Member Taskforce on Energy and the Multi-stakeholder Expert Group, comprised of cross-sector experts from business, academia and government.

The Coordinator will also contribute to project delivery through research into energy policy and practice and report writing, as well as joining programme strategy discussions in a strongly collaborative and non-hierarchical environment. We also anticipate the Coordinator working closely with our Insights Lead to conduct desk research and stakeholder interviews to deliver insights components of Sustainability Programme workstreams. 

After an initial 6-month period focused on Clean Energy Futures, there will be opportunities for the Coordinator to broaden their remit to other projects and topics within the Sustainability Programme.

Reflecting this breadth and the opportunities to grow, the Coordinator will initially report into the Director of Sustainability, who will provide guidance and mentoring support.

The ideal candidate is a highly organised, proactive and energetic individual who can demonstrate their knowledge and professional interest in sustainability and an understanding of the importance of consumers in the transition. They should be comfortable working remotely in a busy and varied global environment and able to communicate clearly and effectively, verbally and in writing.Prior knowledge of the energy sector is useful but not a pre-requisite.

Key responsibilities of the role include the following:  

• Project Coordination: Support the implementation of Sustainability Programme projects, with an initial focus on Clean Energy Futures. This will include managing project plans and tracking timelines for project deliverables, as well as engaging project partners to keep them updated on project progress. 

• Research support: Support the Clean Energy Futures Strategy and Project Leads in conducting research and gathering examples and insights from our global network of stakeholders to inform the development of our analysis, reports and proposals. Support the Insights Lead with consumer insights research and stakeholder interviews. 

• Community coordination and meeting organisation: Support organisation of in-person and online stakeholder workshops or meetings including supporting the development of agendas, invite lists and online and in-person logistical arrangements where needed. This may include project related meetings and representation at other events and high-level global moments such as COP31. 

• Communications support: Draft, provide input to, and disseminate communications (e.g. meeting minutes, research reports, topic briefings) to project stakeholders, ensuring accurate, timely and appropriate communications. 

• Strategic inputs: Contribute your thoughts and ideas to development and delivery of the clean energy futures and wider sustainability work programmes and strategy as needed. 

The overall work of Consumers International: 

• Work collaboratively with colleagues across the organisation to support the implementation of the Strategic and Business Plans.

• Contribute as needed to team meetings and other Consumers International-wide communication and outreach. 

• Embody the culture and values of Consumers International and help us deliver on those.

About The Noah Jordan Foundation

The Noah Jordan Foundation is a fast-growing UK children’s charity established in memory of Noah, who died in 2024 from POLG mitochondrial disease, a rare and devastating paediatric mitochondrial disorder which can cause severe neurological deterioration and liver failure in children, and for which there is currently no effective treatment or cure.

Following Noah’s death, his family made him a promise: that his legacy would help change the future for children and families affected by mitochondrial disease.

The Foundation was established to deliver that promise through three charitable objectives:

Medical Research

Funding pioneering medical research to improve clinical management, accelerate the development of effective treatments and ultimately help drive progress towards cures for rare paediatric mitochondrial diseases, including POLG-related mitochondrial disorders.

Raising Awareness

Increasing awareness and understanding of mitochondrial disease amongst healthcare professionals, organisations and the wider public through campaigns, events, education and training.

Supporting Children and Families

Providing practical and emotional support to children and families affected by mitochondrial disease through information, resources, services and financial assistance where possible.

Since launching in September 2024, thanks to our incredible community, the Foundation has grown rapidly, raising more than £400,000 in just over 18 months.

Our Impact

The Foundation has already:

• Fully funded a three-year medical research PhD programme into POLG mitochondrial disease at the Mitochondrial Research Group (MRG) at Newcastle University, under the guidance of one of the UK’s leading Professors of Paediatric Mitochondrial Medicine, who also serves as a Charity Medical Advisor to the Foundation.
• Supported affected children, families and organisations across the UK.
• Developed national corporate partnerships and strategic relationships.
• Built a growing national supporter community and dedicated volunteer network.

The Opportunity

Main duties and responsibilities

Manage the DUK project portfolio

• Become a subject matter expert in applied and translational research in DMD, allowing informed decision making and effective communication with key stakeholders
• Support identification of new project and collaborative opportunities, including the ongoing management and delivery of our applicant-led funding call
• Support the Director of Research and Development in project scientific review, working with the Scientific Advisory Board, Patient Advisory Board, Senior Leadership Team and DUK Board of Trustees
• Manage project development and initiation, including contracting, the development of detailed project plans, including go/no-go milestones, and budgets
• Manage and oversee project delivery, including monitoring of progress, according to agreed timelines and deliverables (including written updates and formal reports), and managing project finances, including reviewing and approval of invoices and monitoring project expenditure
• Support research budget forecasting in liaison with the finance team and the Director of Research and Development, and ensure compliance across the project portfolio
• Build and manage relationships with external partners and maintain regular communication through the project life cycle

Research governance and processes

• Support the Director of Research and Development to ensure compliance with the Association of Medical Research Charities (AMRC) requirements, such as - contributing to annual data collection and surveys; implementation of AMRC processes and reviews recommendations, as relevant; keep up to date with relevant news and opportunities for training, collaboration and networking

Support the Director of Research and Development on the following external engagement activities

• Development and implementation of outreach and engagement activities in the DMD patient and research community to inform areas for research focus and prioritisation
• Scoping and development of formal and informal strategic partnerships and relationships with key stakeholder organisations (e.g. membership societies, other charities, consortia etc)

Support delivery of DUK flagship strategic programmes

DUK has strategic programmes in clinical research access and capacity, care standards and care access, assistive technologies and patient data. Under the oversight of the Director of Research and Development and working closely with the relevant programme team:

• Coordinate key programme updates and discussions between the DUK team and the programme teams
• Working with DUK comms team, support the development of external comms and marketing
• Working with the Director of Research and Development and the programme teams, support development of new initiatives and external funding opportunities

Other key responsibilities

• Provide general research admin support (e.g. arrange research meetings, both internal and external, prepare agendas and take minutes)
• Work with DUK comms team to identify case studies and success stories and support the development of the research comms strategy
• Coordinate research comms and work with the Director of Research and Development and comms team to ensure all research content is accurate and appropriate
• Work with the income generation and comms teams to provide updates to our key co-funding partners
