Community and Research Engagement Manager

Salary: £28,000 p.a. + excellent Benefits
Location: The Patrick G Johnston for Cancer Research, Queen's University Belfast
Contract length: 12 month fixed-term contract

We're looking for an innovative, confident and ambitious individual for an exciting role in Northern Ireland. Based at the Patrick G Johnston Cancer Research Centre, you'll drive both public and supporter engagement with our science, with a focus on the development of legacy giving.


You'll need to be self-motivated, energetic and enthusiastic about conveying the excitement about the work we do and the potential it holds. Every day we move closer to cures, developing new and more effective treatments and it will be your job to deliver engaging experiences that help us to share the life-saving research that's happening now while demonstrating the crucial role that gifts in Wills play in our future.

We're looking for a driven individual to...

  • Work within communities, and in conjunction with other internal teams, to build local presence and raise awareness of Cancer Research UK's impact on cancer, and the benefit this has for local people
  • Develop and implement exciting ways to involve supporters, building loyalty and increasing propensity to give
  • Bring local science to life by arranging events for supporters such as lab visits, open days, researcher talks and Legacy Inspire events
  • Identify and engage current and new supporters to encourage legacy giving
  • Develop and implement robust regional legacy and research engagement plans that support national strategies
  • Ensure CRUK's research messages are told at supporter and public events, through delivering activities or co-ordinating researchers' attendance at external events.
  • Build relationships with researchers to encourage their involvement in engagement activities
  • Work with our Professional Partnerships Team to engage with and on-board local solicitors for our Free Will Service.

  • Positive and proactive nature
  • Confident, adaptable communication skills
  • Excellent relationship, negotiating and influencing skills; with internal and external stakeholders
  • Understanding of the Legacy sector
  • Strong demonstrable IT skills including knowledge of Windows, MS office, and Raisers Edge/Care Contacts/Siebel or other sector recognised databases
  • Understanding of public engagement with science/research sector.

The successful candidate will spend approximately 3 days a week on legacy specific activities and 2 days per week on research engagement activities supporting Cancer Research UK's work in Northern Ireland.
