Head of Marketing & Communications

About the role

The Head of Marketing and Communications plays a leading role in developing the gallery’s brand, growing and diversifying audiences, and strengthening the visibility of the organisation locally, nationally and internationally.  Working closely with the Director and Senior Management Team (SMT), this pivotal role is instrumental in helping to meet the gallery’s objectives to increase footfall and digital engagement, strengthen relationships with existing visitors and develop new audiences. This post-holder plays a central role with the Director in maintaining the artistic reputation and profile of Modern Art Oxford as one of the UK’s most ambitious and influential contemporary art organisations, and driving ambitious marketing and communications campaigns. 

The position is responsible for developing and delivering the gallery’s audience development, communications and digital strategies, and plays a central role in nurturing relationships with stakeholders, including press, partners, artists and audiences.  Ensuring compliance with data protection legislation and championing the gallery’s value of equality, diversity and inclusion are central to this role.

Reporting to the Director and forming part of the Senior Management Team, the Head of Marketing and Communications is a full time position which manages and is supported by a full-time Marketing Manager and a full-time Design and Communications Officer, with freelance support on press/PR and design as required for specific exhibitions and projects.

Principal Responsibilities

Marketing and Communications

• To grow and diversify Modern Art Oxford’s visiting and online audiences by leading audience development, communications and digital marketing strategies that will enable the organisation to build on its brand and profile, and strengthen its visibility in Oxford, the UK and beyond.
• To develop and oversee implementation of all marketing, communications and PR activity including media relations, social media and digital activity, development of marketing and branding collateral, and on-site interpretation.
• To formulate with the direction of the Director a transformational vision for the use of digital technologies to drive engagement and interaction with our online audiences.
• To manage effective and efficient relationships with any external PR and marketing consultants and companies.
• To develop and nurture key stakeholder, media and marketing relationships and partnerships and cultivate new relationships to ensure that our profile is high locally, nationally and internationally, and that our position as a leading tourist attraction in Oxfordshire and the South East grows.
• To strategically develop distinctive and innovative digital content, working closely and in creative collaboration with the Head of Exhibitions, Head of Communities, Participation and Practice as well as the wider Marketing and Communications team.
• To work with colleagues to strengthen visitor experience and engagement, both on-site and digitally, to increase profile and ensure that the organisation continues to thrive as one of the UK’s leading contemporary art spaces.
• To work closely with the SMT to drive audience research, development and evaluation, ensuring that the gallery attracts significant visitor numbers and closely addresses our stakeholder priorities.
• To manage the Marketing Manager  and the Design and Communications Officer positions.

Fundraising and Finance

• To attend events at Modern Art Oxford and externally to represent the gallery and build relationships with key external stakeholders. Occasional weekend and evening work will be required.
• To ensure tight, clear, budgetary setting, control and regular re-forecasting against targets working with the Head of Finance.
• To work closely with the Head of Development to support new fundraising initiatives and partnerships as required.
• To regularly review all communications activities, suppliers and resources to ensure best value for money.
• To prepare reports as required by Arts Council England and Oxford City Council and other funders/stakeholders in relation to digital, marketing and communications activities.

General

• To support the work of the gallery in strengthening the equality, diversity and inclusivity of the working environment and practices.
• To ensure team management and cross-departmental work is effective and timely in achieving annual targets.
• To ensure that Modern Art Oxford complies with all aspects of the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) in relation to marketing and communication activities with audiences, stakeholders and any other third parties.
• To participate in training and development activities as required and assist with the training and development of colleagues.
• To carry out all duties in accordance with all Modern Art Oxford’s policies including Equal Opportunities, Access, Employment, Health and Safety, Child Safeguarding, Data Protection and Equality, Diversity and Inclusion Policies and the Creative Case for Diversity.
• To report to Modern Art Oxford’s Board of Trustees when requested.

Person Specification

• Experience of running a Marketing and Communications team at a senior level within an arts organisation or similar field
• Experience of leading on mixed marketing campaigns, including setting measurable targets 
• Significant experience of managing and motivating teams and being a supportive and encouraging team player
• Excellent arts press contacts and/or partnership development experience.
• Demonstrable experience of audience research, segmentation and development
• A strategic and analytical thinker able to devise, implement and report on strategies and to evaluate data using platforms such as Google Analytics and AdWords and experience of SEO, Content Management Systems, and social media platforms and analytics.
• An ability to prioritise competing workloads and work effectively under pressure in a fast paced and leanly resourced working environment
• Strong project management skills, including budget management

The Humane League is seeking a self-motivated, organized, collaborative individual with the drive to create progressive change for millions of farmed animals as part of our Global Corporate Engagement team. As Temporary Global Corporate Engagement Coordinator, you will support global corporate engagement work by recording and maintaining data on cage-free and broiler chicken welfare policies and providing crucial administrative support to the team. You will manage our research databases and conduct research on food companies, finding corporate policies, company contacts, and other information to inform global campaigns and corporate relations work. You will also work closely with members of the Open Wing Alliance (OWA), our global coalition of animal protection groups, to share data and progress, and you’ll coordinate with member organizations and/or third parties to translate global commitments into key languages. 

You are passionate about The Humane League’s mission of ending the abuse of animals raised for food and are keen to use data to support this work. While working autonomously is an important part of this role, the ability to communicate and collaborate effectively with both internal and external stakeholders will also be paramount to your success. You are able to work independently and as a member of a team in a fast-paced environment, and you bring the organizational skills needed to prioritize and manage multiple tasks effectively and efficiently. This position reports to the Director of Global Corporate Engagement.

This is a temporary, full-time, remote position, beginning in late February and ending in late August. The duration may be extended or shortened at The Humane League’s discretion. The temporary hire will provide coverage while a permanent staff member is on maternity leave, with overlap for training and onboarding. This position provides the opportunity for optional domestic and international travel, equivalent to 1 or more trips per year.

CORE RESPONSIBILITIES

• Update and maintain THL’s global commitment tracking database by transferring,  fact-checking, and proofreading data submitted by other animal welfare organizations. Keep policy information, corporate contacts, translations, and other details up to date in the database and other tracking documents so that progress and statistics can be shared internally and externally.
• Maintain our database of country-level cage-free information to inform global corporate relations work. Track relevant information on countries’ cage-free status, major commitments, legislation, and more. 
• Work with the OWA to collect key language translations of global cage-free and broiler chicken commitments so that groups around the world can leverage commitments in their respective regions.
• Assist with setting the Global Corporate Engagement team’s strategy, bringing a data lens to inform strategic decisions. 
• Independently perform research on food companies to support global campaigns and corporate negotiations, finding details such as executive contact information, existing animal welfare policies, corporate brand portfolios, worldwide locations, and more. 
• Refine the team’s list of hundreds of global companies in order to identify the top companies to prioritize. Annually update data on the top global companies, tracking their revenue, number of locations, countries of operation, welfare commitments, and more.
• Carry out administrative duties for team meetings including scheduling, agenda creation, note-taking, and facilitation. 
• Create presentations for OWA corporate engagement webinars. Co-lead presentations and provide tech support as needed.

In addition to the above essential job duties, other duties may be assigned as business needs arise. These may include non-essential, marginal job duties.

Compensation and Benefits

The annual compensation range for this role is:

• $56,895 - $69,539 USD for candidates based in the United States
• $56,269 - $68,773 CAD for candidates based in Canada
• £34,086 - £41,661 GBP for candidates based in the United Kingdom
• R$23,200- R$34,800 for candidates based in Brazil
• $34,060,829-  $51,091,243 COP for candidates based in Colombia

Compensation ranges for candidates based in other locations will be determined prior to extending an offer.

ABOUT THE ROLE 

As Fundraising and Communications Coordinator, your main focus will be trusts and foundations: researching opportunities, writing persuasive applications and producing clear reports. You’ll also play a part in growing support from corporates, community fundraising, individual donors and major gifts, helping to build a broader base of income over time. 

Alongside this, you’ll lead on communications. That means keeping our website and social channels current, producing supporter newsletters, and sharing our story more widely through PR and campaigns. You’ll help make sure the difference TRAIN makes for young people is seen and understood by funders, partners and the local community. 

It’s a hands-on role, well-suited to someone who enjoys writing, building relationships and juggling different projects. You don’t need to be an experienced fundraiser — we’re open to people with transferable skills, whether from corporate, public or third sector backgrounds. What matters most is that you can communicate clearly, organise your workload, and are motivated by making a difference for young people. 

You’ll report directly to the CEO and work closely with the rest of the team. This is a part-time role of approximately 30 hours per week, which can be worked flexibly. The role is based in Didcot with hybrid working, but for the right candidate we will consider a fully remote arrangement.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES 

Fundraising (approx. 80%) 

• Pipeline and planning – work with the CEO to keep a clear fundraising plan, with trusts and foundations as the main focus alongside manageable growth in corporates, community, and individual giving. 

• Trusts and foundations – research prospects, build a live pipeline, and write strong, tailored bids. Prepare accurate budgets and gather evidence from the team to strengthen proposals. 

• Reporting and stewardship – deliver timely reports, thank funders and donors well, and manage renewals and uplift opportunities. 

• Relationship development – nurture links with local businesses, community groups and potential major donors. Prepare simple proposals and support fundraising events or activities as needed. 

• Systems and compliance – maintain accurate records of applications, deadlines and outcomes. Ensure fundraising activity is compliant with GDPR and charity regulations. 

Communications (approx. 20%) 

• Supporter communications – produce engaging newsletters, updates and thank-yous that connect donors and partners with TRAIN’s impact. 

• Digital presence – update the website and social media channels with accurate, timely content that reflects TRAIN’s work and values. 

• PR and profile – share stories with local media, partners and networks. Ensure TRAIN’s messaging is clear, consistent and accessible. 

• Community engagement – promote TRAIN’s profile, youth offer, brand and presence in the community. 

General 

• Work closely with the CEO to align fundraising and comms priorities. 

• Collaborate with youth work staff to gather stories, quotes and data that demonstrate TRAIN’s impact.
