Love books? Want to make a difference in your community? Acorns Children’s Hospice is thrilled to announce the opening of a brand-new Superstore and will include a book shop and we need you!

As part of our network of shops across the West Midlands, the Harborne Superstore helps us generate vital funds to support children and their families. By volunteering in our new store, you’ll play a key role in this mission while sharing your passion for books.

Step into a dynamic and exciting environment where no two days are the same!

As a shop volunteer you will.

• Organise and Catalogue books, journals, and other materials to keep our collection well-ordered and accessible.
• Assist Visitors in finding the right books and resources, ensuring they have a great experience.
• Engage with Customers by offering friendly service, answering queries, and creating a welcoming atmosphere.
• Curate and Sort Donations by arranging shelves, selecting featured titles, and helping process new book donations.

How Much Time Will It Take?

Our shop is open Monday to Saturday, 9am–6pm, and Sundays, 10am–4pm. You can choose the hours that suit you, but we’d love for you to volunteer at least 3 hours a week.

Full Training Provided
No prior experience is required—just enthusiasm and a love for books! While previous experience is a plus, it's not essential. We’ll provide all the training and support you need to succeed

About Acorns Children’s Hospice
At Acorns, we provide vital care and support for children with life-limiting and life-threatening conditions, and their families. Our shops play a huge role in funding this care – and that’s where you come in!

The Role
We are looking for friendly, reliable volunteers to join our sorting area team. You’ll be helping us process generous donations from our local community, ensuring items are prepared and ready to sell in our shops.

What you’ll do:

• Sort through donated items such as clothing, toys, books, and homeware
• Check the quality and suitability of donations
• Prepare items for display in our shops
• Work as part of a supportive, welcoming team

What we’re looking for:

• Enthusiasm and a positive attitude
• Willingness to get stuck in and work as part of a team
• An eye for detail (spotting hidden treasures is a bonus!)
• No previous experience needed – full training provided

Shop Volunteering Opportunities - Ilkley

Our shops are at the heart of local communities raising vital funds for our fight against homelessness and bad housing - and they’re powered by our volunteers!

Suggested Involvement: It’s up to you! We have volunteers who support for one hour a week and others who volunteer more. Many people volunteer for a morning or an afternoon each week, but we’ll have a chat about your availability after you’ve applied.

Availability: The shop is open Monday - Saturday 08:00-16:00.

What can I do?

After you’ve filled in an application, we will invite you for an informal chat to find the right role for you. Some roles involve a basic criminal record check being completed during recruitment. Having a criminal record does not mean that you cannot volunteer with us, but it may impact the ways you can get involved.

• Volunteering in the shop

Our retail volunteers are in the middle of it all, and there’s plenty to get involved with. You might be sorting stock, engaging with customers, ringing items through the till, creating fantastic window displays or keeping our shop floor looking organised.

- You will not undergo a criminal record check for this role   

• Volunteering in a leadership role

Our volunteer supervisors help with overseeing the running of our shop and creating a fantastic environment for our customers. You may be involved with coordinating and supporting other volunteers, operating computer systems, and being a key point of contact for the shop.

Skills and Experiences Required:

We welcome applications from people with a wide range of skills and experiences. You don’t need to have volunteered or worked in a shop before as full training will be provided. What’s important to us is that you are a team player, open to learning and willing to follow Shelter’s policies and can be an excellent ambassador for Shelter. We particularly welcome applications from people with lived experience of bad housing or homelessness.

Induction, Learning and Development:

To enable you to take part in this opportunity Shelter will:

• Welcome you with a Volunteer Handbook
• Provide training, induction, and ongoing support from your Shop Manager to help you feel confident in your role
• Refund any out-of-pocket expenses in line with Shelter’s volunteer expenses policy

The Role

We are seeking a new Chair of the Board to provide strategic leadership, ensure good governance, and support the long-term sustainability and growth of Filling Good. This is a rewarding opportunity to lead a purpose-driven organisation making real environmental and social change at the local level.

Key Responsibilities

Strategic Leadership

• Guide the Board in setting and reviewing strategic goals.

• Lead an annual strategy workshop (e.g. SWOT analysis, SMART goal setting).

• Ensure consistent progress tracking against the co-operative’s strategic plan.

Governance Oversight

• Chair Board meetings with clear agendas and effective timekeeping.

• Ensure compliance with legal, food safety, and risk management requirements.

• Support transparent communication with members and foster a shared understanding of priorities.

 Operational Support

• Act as a point of contact and line management for senior staff (e.g.Senior Retail Manager).

• Hold annual informal reviews with key volunteers to set goals and offer support.

• Monitor key performance indicators, financial updates, and operational risks.

Board & Team Development

• Facilitate reviews for individual directors and the Board as a whole.

• Support the ongoing learning and development of Board members.

• Represent Filling Good at events and within the wider co-operative and sustainability sectors.

About You

We’re looking for someone who:

• Brings leadership experience and a collaborative, facilitative approach

• Understands or is keen to learn about co-operative governance

• Is passionate about sustainability, social impact, and ethical retail

• Can commit time and energy to support a growing, purpose-led organisation

• Is diplomatic, organised, and a great communicator

Experience in strategy, governance, HR, or ethical business is desirable but not essential.
