We are looking for a dedicated Children’s Advocate to join our team and visit a secure children’s home in South Gloucestershire, near Bristol, to represent and amplify the voices of young people aged 10 to 18 who are in secure care.

Our Advocacy services offer direct support to children and young people in care, those in need, those in custody, care leavers, and those with mental health needs. Advocates across the country help ensure these young individuals have a voice in decisions about their lives. This support can be provided via a telephone helpline or through one-on-one advocacy, such as assisting a child at a review meeting or helping them file a complaint about their care. Coram Voice delivers visiting advocacy services to secure units nationwide, including Secure Training Centres, Juvenile Young Offender Institutions, psychiatric hospitals, residential special schools, and children’s homes.
About the Secure Unit:
The Secure Home accommodates up to 24 children, divided between two areas: 16 in the main home, which includes an educational unit, and a separate home for up to 8 young people. The children in this home require a secure placement for their protection and rehabilitation, and our role is to ensure that their rights are respected at every stage of their care.
About the Role:
As a Children’s Advocate, you will be an essential independent voice for the children in this secure home. You will regularly visit the home, meet with the children, and ensure their voices are heard in the decisions that affect their lives. Your advocacy will be pivotal in promoting their rights, safeguarding their well-being, and ensuring that their concerns and wishes are respected within the care planning process.
Key Responsibilities:
- Build trusting relationships with the children, creating an open and safe environment for them to voice their concerns.
- Conduct regular visits to the secure home to meet with the children, ensuring they feel safe and supported in expressing their views.
- Represent children’s interests ensuring their voices are heard in decisions about their care, treatment, and rehabilitation.
- Advocate for the Children's rights, ensuring they understand their entitlements and are fully informed about decisions affecting them.
- Collaborate with care staff, social workers, youth offending team workers and other professionals to ensure a holistic approach to safeguarding and supporting each young person, as directed by the wishes of the child.
- Ensure that safeguarding issues are identified and addressed in a timely and appropriate manner.

- Proven experience in children advocacy, youth work, or social care, particularly with children and young people in residential, secure, or care settings.
- Knowledge of children’s rights, safeguarding practices, care and youth justice system.
- Strong communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to engage children or young people from diverse backgrounds and support them in expressing their views.
- The ability to work independently and as part of a team.

The Lead Coach is primarily responsible for overseeing the training room and group sessions with young people. You will help shape the training environment and will confidently adapt and deliver materials and sessions to work within the group’s development towards work readiness.
Delivery of Spear Programme - Group and 1:1 coaching [60%]
- Preparing and coaching Spear Foundation sessions and 1-1s, ensuring that young people are engaged, retained and work-ready by the end of this initial phase of the programme.
- Building relationships with young people on the programme and managing culture, and attitudes in the training room.
- Adapting the Spear coaching material according to the needs of the Trainees and managing behaviour effectively.
Delivery of Spear Career [20%]
- Delivering weekly Spear Career sessions (including running workshops with past Trainees), maintaining records and reporting on statistics, and creatively developing ongoing relationships with Spear Trainees.
Training the Assistant Coach [10%]
- Contributing towards the training and developing of the Assistant Coach by modelling excellent coaching and giving regular feedback.
Trainee recruitment [10%]
- Developing relationships with Job Centres and local referral agencies to ensure that the maximum number of Spear Trainees are enrolled on each programme. This involves liaising with referral agencies, active face-to-face recruitment and monitoring recruitment statistics.

About the role
You will be the local leader for Shelter’s Community Services, leading a multidisciplinary team in implementing Shelter’s strategy locally, delivering the local response to the housing emergency and empowering the local community in Sheffield to fight for home.
You will take the lead on the delivery of services and contracts to provide consistently high levels of performance, and plan and deliver service development strategies, including seeking business development opportunities that align with our strategic aims, both across Community Services and in partnership with the Lead Solicitor.
As the strategic lead for Sheffield, you will promote and direct systems change activity, so we better understand what is influencing people’s experience of homelessness and bad housing and have effective plans to influence change.
You will act as an ambassador for Shelter in the local area, representing the organisation through media, networks and local stakeholder engagement.
Alongside this, you will plan and implement resourcing plans for your Hub, including staffing, volunteers and engaging people with lived experience and will manage the Hub Leadership team. Ensuring there are multiple and ongoing opportunities for people with lived experience of homelessness and bad housing to be part of Hub development, activities and learning is a key element of this role, as well as upholding and promoting a learning culture with the Hub.
About you
A natural leader, who can inspire, others to advocate for change, you will have a proven working knowledge of homelessness, housing and related issues affecting local communities. You will possess sound experience of managing and delivering contracts, partnerships and services along with experience of being involved in implementing and reviewing change management, whilst demonstrating excellent budgeting and financial reporting skills.
The ability to proactively develop and maintain key relationships and having impressive analytical skills to use insight and evidence to present data, manage performance and to identify and implement systems change are vital to this role, as are impressive interpersonal and communication skills, both verbal and written.

About the team
Our Lancashire hub offers a range of advice, support and guidance to people in the local area, specialising in homelessness and bad housing but also assisting with related issues such as welfare benefits advice. We work closely with the local community to understand the barriers faced by those in housing need to influence and make change, as well as delivering advice and awareness sessions in community settings.

Sounds great, what will I be doing?
In this role, the individual will work as part of a multidisciplinary team—alongside clinicians, social workers, and community partners—to support adults with moderate to severe mental illness. They will hold a caseload of service users, acting as the key contact and contributing to care planning, progress monitoring, and discharge support using the clinical records system. A key focus will be the collaborative development of person-centred recovery plans that emphasise social goals and community integration. Using trauma-informed and strength-based approaches, they will build strong therapeutic relationships to support individuals in achieving their personal recovery goals. The role involves helping service users access local resources, attend appointments, and engage in wellbeing activities, peer support, or psychoeducational groups. They will promote recovery-focused, jargon-free communication, advocate for co-production and integrated care, and liaise with statutory and voluntary sector organisations to ensure smooth service navigation and warm handovers. Attendance at relevant clinical meetings and community events is expected, representing both Hestia and the Community Mental Health Team. Accurate and timely documentation of support activities, risk assessments, and user progress is essential, along with maintaining safe and ethical practice in line with safeguarding protocols, health and safety procedures, and quality standards. The role also includes active participation in ongoing supervision, training, professional development, annual appraisals, and clinical oversight.

Here's what the team will be looking for
The ideal candidate will have an NVQ Level 4 in Care (or equivalent) or at least two years' experience in a mental health setting, with a strong understanding of mental health, recovery, and co-production principles. They will be skilled in care planning, risk assessment, and group facilitation, with knowledge of the Mental Health Act and experience working collaboratively across services and communities. Excellent communication, IT proficiency (including electronic case management tools), and the ability to work both independently and in a team are essential. About the role
Our passionate Regional Casework Coordinators are SSAFA’s front line of support for members of the armed forces community in need. They are the first point of contact for all beneficiaries into the Regional office, assessing needs and allocating the case to one of our volunteer caseworkers.
You will sometimes handle complex problems from individuals who may be distressed, identifying the presenting and potential underlining needs to determine the best way to support the beneficiary. You will have ownership of cases from beginning to end, coordinating the casework process in a timely manner and ensure that the beneficiary journey is at the centre of the Service. You will have the opportunity to shape processes and procedures within the office which will lead to improvements in the service offered to clients.
To help you establish yourself in this new post you will receive excellent training and induction to SSAFA.
Whilst the post is homebased, to be eligible for this role you are required to live in the West Midlands region, which includes:
Birmingham, Sandwell, Walsall, Dudley, Wolverhampton, Solihull, Coventry, Warwickshire, Worcestershire, Herefordshire, Shropshire and Staffordshire
There will be occasional travel around the West Midlands Region and you may be required to travel at short notice for face to face meetings.
About the team
The team work remotely and pride themselves in maintaining a close working bond which ensures the smooth operation of the office. You will work closely with volunteers from the eight SSAFA branches in the West Midlands, supporting them to administer casework for SSAFA beneficiaries.
