The Finance Director is responsible for all aspects of the group's finances (National Federation of Music Societies, trading as Making Music and its trading subsidiary), to ensure accurate and complete recording of all financial transactions, adherence to internal controls and procedures, and timely and effective analysis and reporting to the Chief Executive, Senior Management Team and other budget holders, the Finance & Compliance Committee and the Board of Trustees.

The Finance Director post is an integral part of the charity's senior management team, working closely with the Chief Executive, the Deputy CEO Advocacy and Lobbying and the Marketing Director, setting the strategic direction of the organisation and ensuring it has the financial systems and resources to implement its strategy.

The role line-manages and oversees the work of the Finance Manager who runs the day-to-day financial accounting processes, with the help of two Finance Administrators.

The role also leads on supporting members with finances, e.g. leading Treasurers' events, relevant website resources and responding to finance-related consultations.

The 2.5 days (18.75 hours) per week can be worked flexibly, and at least some of them from home, by agreement with your line manager. We would expect you to spend at least 1 days each week in our London office in Moorgate.

As Head of Finance, you will be a member of the Executive Team, supporting the Chief Executive with the overall direction and long-term financial viability of the Charity. You will be accountable for developing and implementing the organisation’s financial strategy, delivering effective financial planning, monitoring and reporting, and maintaining sound financial and risk management systems.

Key responsibilities:

• Provide sound financial advice to the Chief Executive, Board of Trustees and senior managers to support effective leadership and management of the Charity
• Lead financial planning, budgeting, cash flow management and resource allocation, ensuring strong processes for performance monitoring at all levels
• Establish and oversee financial reporting systems, monitoring key performance indicators and delivering management information to the Board
• Take responsibility for compliance with accounting, tax and regulatory requirements, ensuring internal financial systems and controls are robust and scalable
• Undertake the role of Company Secretary, ensuring all statutory and regulatory governance obligations are met
• Lead procurement of systems, products and services, driving cost savings and value for money in line with the Charity Governance Code
• Oversee relationships with banks, auditors, payroll providers, insurers and charity finance specialists, ensuring the Charity manages its assets effectively
• Ensure appropriate risk management techniques and financial controls are embedded at strategic and operational levels

About you:

This role will suit a fully qualified accountant (ACA, ACCA or CIMA) with senior-level finance leadership experience in a charity or not-for-profit organisation of comparable scale. You will bring strong technical knowledge of Charity SORP, charity law and financial governance, a collaborative leadership style, and the confidence to operate with minimum direction in a small Executive Team. Experience of company secretarial duties and charity governance is essential.

Key Responsibilities

Funding & Commercial Support

• Support funding applications by preparing and reviewing budgets for grant bids and proposals
• Monitor and report on restricted funds from a management reporting perspective
• Produce financial models to support commercial relationships and decision-making
• Undertake first-stage financial review of commercial participator agreements, escalating where required

Financial Capability & Continuous Improvement

• Design and deliver budget holder training and ongoing financial literacy support
• Act as a financial sounding board for non-finance teams
• Improve management reporting within finance systems and reporting tools (e.g. Business Central, Power BI)
• Identify opportunities for automation, improved data quality and reporting efficiency
• Support finance systems enhancements, testing and implementation

About You
We’re looking for someone who combines strong technical skills with empathy, curiosity and a commitment to using finance as a tool for impact.
You will ideally have:

• A recognised accounting qualification (ACA, ACCA, CIMA or equivalent) (Part-qualified or qualified by experience also considered)

The Management Accountant acts as a finance business partner to circa 20 budget holders across a diverse portfolio, including Building and Projects, Philanthropy and Fundraising, and corporate services functions such as Finance and IT.

The role supports stakeholders throughout the annual budget, forecasting and year end reporting cycle, ensuring that financial information is accurate, well understood and actively used to inform decision making. Responsibilities include producing monthly management accounts and commentary, providing financial analysis and insight for senior stakeholders, supporting budgets and forecasts, contributing to year end and audit processes, and delivering operational finance and ad hoc analytical support.

This is a hands on, outward facing role in a fast moving environment, offering broad exposure across a complex organisation.

The person

Candidates will have a proven finance background, ideally in management accounting or business partnering. You will be part-qualified, qualified, or with equivalent experience.

The successful individual will be technically strong, analytical and detail focused, with the ability to work to tight deadlines and manage competing priorities. They will be confident engaging with non finance colleagues, building trusted relationships, and explaining financial information clearly and pragmatically.

Strong systems skills are required, particularly in Excel, with the ability to interrogate finance systems to extract insight. A flexible mindset, a proactive approach and a desire to continuously improve processes are essential.

Assistant Accountant

Position: Assistant Accountant

Location: Hybrid working: two days a week in the Bolton office combined with home-working and travel across the network as required.

Salary: £30,000-35,000 per annum (dependant on experience)

Hours: Full-time, 37.5 hours per week

Contract: Permanent

About the Role

This newly defined Assistant Accountant role is designed to work closely within the team together with the Youth Zones to provide proactive financial support service to drive sustainability. This is a varied and interesting role providing support to the Finance Manager in maintaining the accounts for future and current Youth Zone Projects.

This will involve managing a varied workload and supporting the preparation of monthly management accounts for several organisations. The aim is to deliver sound excellent service, with an entrepreneurial approach, rooted in financial practices that are robust and empower Youth Zones to thrive and deliver their mission effectively.

The charity has recently started to development systems and processes, and need someone who combines a curious, forward thinking and collaborative mindset to embrace, drive and have a passion for the ongoing development of the financial services. As a growing and ambitious charity, they offer responsibility, variety and the chance to work with a team wholly invested in providing young people with the opportunity to fulfil their potential. This role will support the Finance Manager in delivering accurate financial reporting and maintaining strong financial controls across multiple Youth Zones.

About You

You will have an AAT Level 3 qualified or be working towards it and experience of:

• Working in a finance or accounts function
• Maintaining purchase and sales ledgers, including invoice processing
• Bank and balance sheet reconciliations
• Using finance systems (e.g. Xero) and strong Excel skills
• Supporting month-end processes (journals, accruals, prepayments)

Essentials:

• ICAEW, ACCA or CIMA qualification or similar
• Demonstrable experience in strategic financial leadership, with a track record of leading financial governance, compliance, and team development
• Knowledge of VAT, tax planning, and advanced accounting practices
• Excellent verbal and written communicator
• Excellent analytical and reporting skills, proficient in financial software and Microsoft Office Suite
• Willingness to undertake some basic tasks as part of a small finance team
