We are looking for an enthusiastic individual to join our operations team, someone with a strong financial background with excellent attention to detail, a flexible attitude, an ability to work effectively under their own initiative and as part of a small team, together with excellent organisation and administrative skills.

Effective financial control is central to our strategy and operating model. The finance officer plays an essential role in maintaining control over our finances and operations. You will process and monitor financial transactions, liaise with our payroll bureau regarding staff payroll and pensions and support the Head of finance. You will be experienced in using Dynamics 365 Business Central as an accounting system.

This is a part-time role for two days a week (0.4FTE), with flexibility about when the hours are worked. It's a hybrid role, working from home and from our office. You will report to our Head of finance. You will also work with all staff on financial matters including personal and credit card expenses, central and project income and expenditure, and processing of payroll by liaising with our external bureau.

The Finance Director is responsible for all aspects of the group's finances (National Federation of Music Societies, trading as Making Music and its trading subsidiary), to ensure accurate and complete recording of all financial transactions, adherence to internal controls and procedures, and timely and effective analysis and reporting to the Chief Executive, Senior Management Team and other budget holders, the Finance & Compliance Committee and the Board of Trustees.

The Finance Director post is an integral part of the charity's senior management team, working closely with the Chief Executive, the Deputy CEO Advocacy and Lobbying and the Marketing Director, setting the strategic direction of the organisation and ensuring it has the financial systems and resources to implement its strategy.

The role line-manages and oversees the work of the Finance Manager who runs the day-to-day financial accounting processes, with the help of two Finance Administrators.

The role also leads on supporting members with finances, e.g. leading Treasurers' events, relevant website resources and responding to finance-related consultations.

The 2 days (15 hours) per week can be worked flexibly, and at least some of them from home, by agreement with your line manager. We would expect you to spend at least 1 days each week in our London office in Moorgate.

The Accountant, Europe supports RAP’s international finance operations across multiple jurisdictions and legal entities, contributing to accurate financial reporting, strong internal controls, regulatory compliance, and effective grants financial management. This role partners with operations, payroll providers, external accountants, auditors, and banking institutions to support a complex global nonprofit environment.

The ideal candidate is a hands-on accounting professional who is comfortable operating across multi-currency environments, managing VAT and intercompany activity, improving financial processes, and supporting international compliance requirements. This position is well-suited for someone who enjoys both operational accounting and building scalable financial practices within a mission-driven organization.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

• Support the month-end and year end close across multiple entities.
• Prepare internal financial reports (cash flow, P&L, and departmental breakdowns).
• Assist with reporting under multiple accounting frameworks, including local GAAP (particularly applicable to Belgium), US GAAP or IFRS.
• Manage intercompany billing, reconciliations, and settlements across global entities.
• Prepare and review VAT calculations and support VAT compliance across European jurisdictions.
• Support grants accounting, including tracking restricted funding, preparing financial reports for funders, and ensuring alignment between grant budgets and actuals.
• Provide documentation and support during external audits.
• Support annual audit and tax preparation processes and responses to auditor inquiries.
• Coordinate with international banking partners for fund transfers, account monitoring, and reconciliation.
• Collaborate with external partners on foreign entity accounting and ensure local compliance.
• Assist in international payroll coordination by verifying time and payroll data and working with third-party providers.
• Track and reconcile payroll entries, including tax filings and benefit deductions, in multiple jurisdictions.
• Maintain RAP’s accounting software (Sage Intacct) and expense management platform (Nexonia), ensuring data integrity.
• Participate in process improvements and documentation of financial workflows.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

• Degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field
• 5+ years of progressive accounting experience
• Experience in nonprofit, international NGO, consulting, or professional services environments strongly preferred
• Demonstrated experience managing VAT accounting and compliance within Europe (particularly ASBLs in Belgium) required
• Experience with grants accounting or funder reporting in a nonprofit or similar environment
• Experience with intercompany accounting and multi-currency environments
• Exposure to more than one accounting framework, such as local GAAP, IFRS, or US GAAP
• Proficiency in accounting software (Sage Intacct strongly preferred) and advanced Excel skills (e.g., pivot tables, VLOOKUP).
• Experience with international finance and accounting principles and compliance (e.g., US, UK, EU).
• Professional fluency in English required, fluency in Dutch, French and other global languages preferred

About the team

 Shelter’s Finance Team sits within the Strategy Enablement Directorate, which also includes HR Operations, Technology and Data, and Governance, Planning and Property. The Finance Team consists of 32 people led by the Assistant Director of Finance.

This role sits within the Financial Planning and Analysis (FP&A) Team. FP&A produces financial reports and analysis, provides expert advice, and enables collaboration to support effective decision making throughout the charity.

Location: Truro, Cornwall (Hybrid) or Remote (UK based) with travel to Truro approx four times per year

Role purpose:

This is a new role created in order to support and strengthen our financial capacity. The role will have day to day responsibility for all finance matters at ShelterBox and will play a pivotal role in ensuring the strength, integrity and effectiveness of financial management at ShelterBox.

The Head of Finance will be a key business partner across the business for all financial matters. Reporting to the Director of Finance, they will lead the finance function overseeing budgeting, financial reporting, compliance and statutory accounts, as well as oversight of the work of the operational finance team and board and committee reporting. While this is a leadership and management position, the small team structure means the successful candidate will be expected to take an active, hands on role in delivering work in addition to leadership responsibilities; They will have their own suite of projects and activities to deliver, as well as leading the finance team, and working across the organisation to support other teams. They'll work closely with our Director of Finance and senior leadership team.

Who are we looking for?

ShelterBox is seeking a qualified accountant with a minimum of ten years PQE in a management capacity.

The successful candidate must have extensive leadership experience and have proven experience in creating a modern, progressive finance function, with customer service at its core; we want this role to create long term impact.

Experience in accounting for projects, professional services and/or inventory would also be beneficial. Sector experience in an INGO is highly desirable.

Main role and responsibilities

· Lead and support finance team including four direct reports

· Provide guidance, advice and be a point of escalation for the finance team

· Represent the Finance Team in senior leadership forums

· Provide business partner support, to exec team, senior managers and international affiliate organisations

· Be a key point of contact for financial matters relating to larger international affiliates

Provide guidance, leadership, advisory support and quality control, across core services provided by direct reports including:

o Monthly financial reporting

o Developing and monitoring annual budgets and quarterly forecasts

o Finance operations including payroll, accounts payable, expenses, forex, cash and bank

o Financial business systems

o International Programmes project financial management including donor reporting; and

o Internal audit services

· Relationship management of investment advisory company and ongoing assessment of performance to ensure we are maximising returns on our investments in a risk appropriate manner

· Preparation of Board and Finance Committee reporting including cover at meetings for Director of Finance in periods of absence

· Setting and monitoring annual team deliverable timeline

· Carrying out ad-hoc financial analysis and reporting

· Development and maintenance of finance KPIs

· Manage relationship with external audit partner

· Provide a quality control review point and support and advise to Financial Controller over annual external audit.

· Guiding and directing team in an advisory capacity on all components of direct and indirect taxation

· Monitor processing of Gift aid to ensure we are compliant but also to drive improvements in gift aid recovery through simple supporting processes and trend analysis

The Finance Manager is responsible for the management of the financial accounting functions of the organisation, for the preparation of statutory accounts, regular management reports, the preparation of all tax returns, supporting budget holders and assisting them fulfil their responsibilities, and for compliance with statutory requirements including compliance with tax laws and regulations.

The Finance Manager will work closely with colleagues across the organisation, including the nation offices, supporting and advising, building excellence in standards within the finance office and injecting innovative solutions to the organisation’s financial strategy.
 

About you

We are looking for a proactive and visible finance professional who is able to engage and build relationships across the organisation as a pivotal member within a values led high performing organisation. You will be a qualified accountant with proven track record of financial management awareness and a solid understanding of charity audits and statutory accounts preparation. You will have the ability to work with staff across the organisation in supporting good financial governance and oversight of financial operational matters. You will have the ability to analyse financial information and present this in a suitable format for the audience. You will have good ability to meet deadlines, be IT literate with an emphasis on financial systems, spreadsheets, Quickbooks and Excel. You will be highly organised with excellent attention to detail and be able to work with minimum supervision.

The role will involve the management of the day-to-day financial activities, VAT, gift aid, payroll and the monthly, quarterly and annual reconciliations and statutory accounts preparation. The job holder will work closely with the Chief Operating Officer, Finance Officer and volunteers within the team. There will be a requirement to work closely with the income generating staff, budget holders, auditors, banks and credit card providers on a regular basis. The Finance Manager will be responsible for managing the Finance Officer and Finance volunteer.
