Deadline: Monday 13 July 2020 at 9am

Background

ShareAction is a charity and campaigning organisation working to unleash the power of the financial system to drive social progress and protect our environment. We focus on transforming the investment system, using it as a lever to generate positive social and environmental impact in the real world.

We do this by:

  • Educating and working with investors to improve their practices;
  • Influencing the policy-makers and industry regulators that can ensure the investment system serves society’s interests in the long-term;
  • Campaigning to unlock the power of investors, as shareholders in companies, to change corporate behaviour (on issues such as climate change, good work and human rights, sustainable food and public health);
  • Mobilising ordinary people, who have a stake in the investment system through their pensions and savings, to demand a change in how their money is invested;
  • Collaborating with other civil society organisations who share our vision.

Job Description

You will be joining us at an exciting time, when there is rising interest in how banks are addressing climate change risks and fostering the transition to a cleaner and safer world. This is a rapidly evolving field and we are looking for someone with excellent research skills and a passion to make a difference to join our team. You will be responsible for supporting ShareAction’s banking work with high-quality research and analysis, and contributing to the development of standards for the banking industry on climate change and other ESG issues going forward.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

Although your role will be varied and open to some change in the activities you will undertake, below are the types of activities that you can expect to be doing:

  • Responsible for drafting reports and briefings for a range of audiences, including investors, banks and companies, and leading research on new areas of work – e.g. forestry;
  • Shares guidance with the banking team and wider organisation where appropriate on the reports and briefings;
  • Supporting the banking team with ad hoc research, for instance to prepare for meetings or presentations;
  • Presenting research findings to banks and investors on an occasional basis and with the support of the Financial Sector Strategies and Communications teams;
  • Contributing to the development of standards for the banking industry – initially on climate change but this might include other ESG issues going forward, working closely with the Senior campaign manager and Director of Financial Sector Strategies;
  • Contributing to analyses aimed at increasing investor engagement standards with the banking industry on climate change – this might include other ESG issues going forward;
  • Helping the Head of Financial Sector Research develop survey methodologies and analyse survey responses. See for example the 2020 Banking on Climate Change survey we published in April 2020;
  • Working closely with our communications team to coordinate press and social media around publications;
  • Assisting in the submissions of responses to consultations, such as those ran by the Bank of England, European Central Bank and the European Commission;
  • Helping the banking team to file shareholder resolutions, draft investor letters and AGM questions, etc.

Please note that this list isn’t exhaustive and the role might change slightly from time to time.

Person specification

We are looking for a passionate, determined individual, with the following experience and skills:

ESSENTIAL

  • At least two years of work experience in or with the banking sector, ideally focused on sustainable banking;
  • Excellent and demonstrable research skills;
  • Excellent analytical skills – the ability to quickly get to grips with new and complex subject areas, assimilate information, pull out the relevant points and communicate them;
  • Great attention to detail;
  • Great team player, who is happy to take advice and direction from colleagues working in other work programmes, such as supporter network/grassroots organising;
  • Experience using research tools such as Eikon or the Bloomberg terminal;
  • Excellent organisational, project and time management skills with the ability to work under pressure, plan and prioritise work effectively and meet deadlines;
  • High standard of written and verbal communication;
  • 'Can do' attitude, willing to help support projects for the banking campaign, such as the filing of resolutions, and drafting of investor letters and AGM questions;
  • Demonstrable understanding of ShareAction’s theory of change and a commitment to the organisation’s values and principles on equality and inclusion;
  • Good working knowledge of Microsoft Office applications, particularly Word, Excel and Powerpoint.

DESIRABLE

  • Experience of working or volunteering for a civil society organisation;
  • Experience of implementing international sustainable banking best practices and standards;
  • Fluent in any of the following Danish, Dutch, French, German, Italian and/or Spanish;
  • Experience of using social media or speaking to the media for professional purposes;
  • A good understanding of responsible investment;
  • Experience of working with Microsoft Office 365, particularly SharePoint;
  • Experience of working with CRM systems, ideally Salesforce.

ShareAction values and respects all differences in people (see and unseen). One of the ways we do this is by actively encouraging staff to work in ways that best suit their needs and our flexible working policy outlines many of the options available - such as part-time and term-time working, job sharing, home working and working compressed hours. Please talk to us at the interview about the flexibility you need. We can’t promise to give you exactly what you want, but we do promise not to judge you for asking.

Due to Covid-19 all interviews will take place online, you will also be expected to work from home for the foreseeable future
