About us
Crisis is the national charity for homeless people, working side by side with thousands of people each year as they find ways out of homelessness. We know that homelessness is not inevitable; we know that together we can end it.
This year, we will begin our new ten-year strategy to end homelessness. Key to our mission is thinking differently and more ambitiously about how we engage with corporate partners and the commercial sector and how we can generate more support for our cause across England, Scotland, and Wales.

The role also involves leading the continued development of our fundraising and partnerships outside of London, creating a national support network to end homelessness.

-
Can think creatively about partnerships, leveraging the unique opportunities that Crisis has.

About First Step Trust (FST)
FST was established in 1994 with the aim of providing access to work experience and salaried employment for people with severe and enduring mental health problems and other disadvantages. Over the years we have managed to adapt our service offer to meet the ongoing changes in funder requirements. We have achieved this by extending our offer to a wider group of long term unemployed people to include a range of practical work and office based work and good quality training courses.
Our approach is about giving workforce members the chance to overcome some of the difficulties facing them by getting them involved as colleagues. We provide ‘on the job’ training, advice and support to enable each person to improve their basic skills and knowledge of the various work undertaken. This will include supporting workforce members to gain recognised qualifications and access to work placements with our customers and other organisations.
In the run up to the pandemic we had 4 garages and Abbevilles. During the pandemic we lost 3 garages due to the loss of trade (Salford), the ending of a lease (Lambeth) and an agreed early termination of the lease in Bexley. We also lost funding for the Lambeth project March 2023 when our contract came to an end.
In addition to the pandemic, funders have increasingly been looking for projects that get people into work and then offer support to help them stay in employment. The Individual Placement and Support (IPS) is the preferred model for most funders.
Whilst IPS has it benefits it is not suitable for the group of people FST works with due to the levels of literacy / numeracy, low self-esteem, low self-confidence and other factors including low level or no formal marketable skills to offer employers. The majority of the FST workforce have been unemployed anywhere from 5 to 10 years or more; 44% have never worked. We also know that most find it difficult to engage with more traditional forms of learning e.g. college, when they first join us. Prior to joining FST 55% of workforce members had achieved Level 1/Foundation or below (41% have none).
In practice this means that IPS is not suitable for them as the type of work they are eligible for (shelf stacking, warehouse work etc.) does not pay enough to make the transition from welfare benefits viable. Furthermore there is a genuine concern about not being able to return to the same level of benefits if they are unable to stay in work.
The welfare benefit trap is well known and our response has been to focus on developing people’s marketable skills across a range of practical and office / finance work.
In practice it can take 2 to 3 years or more to help people overcome the issues they face in learning new skills and overcoming the psychosocial issues alongside the fear of losing welfare benefits. The results of this approach, however, are impressive with a core group of people moving (sustainably) on to salaried employment with FST or externally.
In more recent years we have shifted our focus to developing new ways of learning and accreditation using technology including Virtual Reality (VR) QR codes and other assistive technologies (SMaRT Pathways). These programmes are aimed at helping the FST workforce gain the skills they need to access well paid employment in sectors where there are severe skills shortages e.g. the automotive trades, construction and catering.
In addition to SMaRT Pathways there is FST’s SMaRT garage services. Our social enterprise based in Woolwich which provides MOT testing, vehicle repair and servicing to both private and commercial customers. It also provides learning opportunities and work placements for workforce complementing SMaRT Pathways training. The garage also offers opportunities to gain work skills in reception, customer service, parts ordering and other relative administration tasks.
FST’s main office, also based in Woolwich, offers work skill opportunities in finance, marketing, training and general administration in addition to delivering short course training programmes.
We also run 3 work projects in secure units in the North West offering work experience in catering, car valeting and delivering training courses.
About the role
The General Manager will play a pivotal role in overseeing all aspects of FST’s operations, including service delivery, human resources, outcomes governance and compliance, finance, and administrative functions.
Working closely with the CEO, you will be responsible for ensuring the smooth and efficient functioning of our day-to-day operations across the organisation, while contributing to the strategic planning and growth of the organisation.
Working closely with the CEO you will lead the day-to-day internal operations and business activities to ensure the smooth running of FST. You will act as a strong team leader, who motivates and inspires a small team, fostering and supporting the CEO to champion a positive organisational culture.
Who are we looking for?
We are looking for someone with sound experience in a range of management roles including direct line management and senior management. FST is poised to grow and as we develop our capacity it is likely things will change and develop organically. As such the General Manager will need to be flexible in their approach to overseeing this part of our growth.
Whilst you don’t have to be an HR professional/expert or be qualified, we are looking for someone who has experience of managing staff in a supportive environment. This means that you will have some understanding of managing staff within an HR framework, finance and budgeting, team dynamics and the FST philosophy
We need someone who can demonstrate the ability to oversee the successful delivery of our services, both via funding contracts and our trading activities. You will also be involved in sourcing new business and the expansion of our existing customer base.
You will come with flexibility and adaptability to navigate the unique challenges and opportunities faced by a small organisation. Whilst this is a strategic role there will be times when the situation demands direct action. This is particularly relevant when developing and supporting the people who use our services (workforce) to develop their skills, confidence and work ethic.
You will be a strong, hands on line manager with the experience to make things happen, along with the ability to think strategically with a track record of taking a project from inception to conclusion.
Main duties and responsibilities:
- Oversight and management of day to day operations of all FST activities including staff management and support, budgetary management, health and safety, training and development of the workforce.
- Under the direction of the CEO, implement FST strategies, plans and processes.
- Manage and monitor finances, analysing income and expenditure against project budgets and produce reports as required.
- Ensure our social enterprises are commercially viable without compromising on the values underpinning FST.
- Ensure services are delivered in line with service delivery agreements and in line with FST’s vision and philosophy
- Developing and maintaining good relations with local community organisations, funders and referring agencies.
- Managing and monitoring outcomes to ensure funding contract requirements are being met.
- Ensure FST is compliant with Health & Safety, GDPR and other relevant legislation
- Work in accordance within the limits and parameters as set out in FST’s policies and procedures, by the Board and CEO.
- Perform other tasks as reasonably required according to the needs of the project and FST.
Candidates will have:
- Demonstrable experience of all aspects of managing staff and operations, ideally within a smaller organisation.
- Experience of implementing strategies, policies and procedures.
- Awareness of the demands of operating within a trading environment where commercial standards are applied.
- Excellent administrative skills.
- Understanding of and commitment to diversity, equality and inclusion
- Demonstrable organisational skills
- Excellent communication skills.
- Excellent knowledge of MS Office programmes, Internet Explorer and Social Media.
- Commitment to equal opportunities principles and practice.
- Understanding and commitment to the values, principles and approach of FST.
The client requests no contact from agencies or media sales.

Prospectus is delighted to be partnering with The Postal Museum, in the recruitment of their new Head of Marketing and Development. The Postal Museum is one of the newest and most exciting museums in London. It opened in 2017 and the museum is already established as a must-visit destination with award-winning experiences and marketing campaigns. Alongside hands-on exhibitions exploring over 500 years of British social and communications history, visitors can experience a subterranean ride through the tunnels of the old Post Office Underground Railway – Mail Rail. The museum welcomes over 160,000 visitors and its online content reaches a million users a year. This position is offered as a permanent, full-time position and will report to the CEO.
As the Head of Marketing & Development, you will be responsible for bringing the brand of The Postal Museum to life in new and innovative ways to reach ambitious admission and visitor targets - across all marketing channels, press and media, and in all communications to engage their varied audiences. Additionally, you will be responsible for driving individual giving and developing corporate support for the museum. This is a strategic leadership role, in which you will be sitting on The Postal Museum’s Executive Management team. You will be responsible for achieving the organisation’s admissions income and visitor number targets and building its profile externally. This role oversees all marketing, PR, digital, internal communication, branding activity and fundraising efforts focussed on individuals and Corporates undertaken across the organisation. This is an exciting time to join the museum, as it begins to plan for two important anniversaries in 2027, 10 years since the museum opened and 100 years since Mail Rail first began operation.
Marketing of the museum is at the heart of the job, and good experience is needed for that function. It is not necessary to have direct experience of managing a development role if you have had experience of working on fundraising campaigns or with fundraising colleagues. The Postal Museum is a young museum with developing practice and so, they are more interested in recruiting someone with the enthusiasm, work ethic and curiosity to develop in their career than someone who knows everything about marketing and development but cannot think beyond that. The ideal candidate will have extensive experience of working at a senior level in a marketing or communications role, together with experience of developing, implementing, and delivering PR, Digital, and Marketing strategies to achieve sales targets. You will have experience delivering successful integrated marketing campaigns with demonstrable ROI, and a proven ability to motivate and lead teams, advise, and influence senior colleagues. You should have experience of building and managing a brand, as well as building and managing relationships with media contacts, partner organisations, stakeholders, and agencies.
To apply, please submit your CV and Supporting Statement explaining how you meet the requirements of the position in detail. Following your application, you may be contacted by Prospectus for an informal discussion and be asked to provide further information to assist with this recruitment process. Prospectus are committed to building inclusive and diverse organisations, and welcome applications from all sections of the community, including those with lived experience. We invest in your journey as a candidate and are committed to supporting you in your application.
About us:
Established in 2021, Opportunity Green is a fast-growing not-for-profit organisation that helps to identify and unlock opportunities to tackle climate change. We build ambitious coalitions, support climate vulnerable countries in international negotiations and find innovative legal pathways to fight climate change. We are now looking for a Climate Economics & Diplomacy Senior Director to expand our work on a climate just economy.
What’s the role?
Economics is the study of the distribution of finite resources across our planet. And yet the profession often seems to forget that resources really are finite, and that distribution must be equitable. The number one argument we hear against most climate measures is economic: what about growth? What about jobs? What’s the business case? Opportunity Green’s Senior Director will develop our narrative to ward off these questions but more fundamentally, bring economics systems change – and how to influence policymakers to incorporate this change into their thinking - to the forefront of all our work. This is an incredibly exciting opportunity for any economist who believes that the climate movement needs more economic expertise and can bring ideas on how to embed the necessary change in economic thinking to climate policy. You will be OG’s first economist hire (other than the CEO) and you will have the opportunity to shape our economics strategy.
Initially you will work with our established international shipping policy team, working to ensure that the shipping sector which is historically undertaxed, begins to contribute in financial terms to climate vulnerable countries. Meanwhile, many large shipping companies have large revenue which goes to shareholders in the global north. One of your first projects could be to assess the current geographical imbalance of financial flows from the shipping industry, and work alongside our international shipping team to reimagine the economics of the shipping sector to meet our climate goals.
A very similar argument can be made on the aviation side. The EU Emissions Trading System (ETS) currently only covers intra-EU flights but soon a discussion will be had on whether that should also cover international flights. Opportunity Green believes the EU ETS should cover international flights and that, very importantly, some of the ETS revenue must go to support the climate vulnerable. We are looking for someone who can support both these goals but more fundamentally, raise the profile of both sectors as potential sources of climate finance in broader international climate finance discussions.
However, we recognise that agreeing to raise revenue from aviation and shipping sectors is only the first step. The next step will be to ensure that those revenues actually reach climate vulnerable communities. The Senior Director will work with the international shipping team to expand OG’s policy on the distribution of revenues, with the explicit goal of maximising their support for climate vulnerable communities. You will follow international climate finance discussions and strategically intervene for OG when our goals can be supported.
Initially you will report to the CEO, while the Chief Strategy and Impact Officer is on parental leave. You will manage a team of three, with one direct line report initially, who are already well established in supporting climate vulnerable countries in the International Maritime Organization.
About the candidate:
We are looking for someone who can think strategically about how to gain the support of policymakers in the global north to support the most climate vulnerable across the world.
We are looking for a candidate with:
- An inspirational leadership style, who is brave enough to tell the truth about the climate crisis but is also respectful of international policymakers, who can use detailed economic arguments to inspire ambition.
Desirable skills and experience:
We do not expect any candidate to have all the skills listed below but rather we look for transferable skills and potential as well as past experience.
- Economics degree or equivalent working experience
- Experience working with policymakers to improve and drive ambition
- Experience of generating ideas to drive economics systems change and crafting an easily understandable narrative that can be communicated to policymakers around that change
- Ability to get to grips with technological and policy detail around aviation, shipping, buildings, steel and agriculture as necessary and to know when that detail is needed in policymaker meetings
- Experience of leading a team and working with staff to inspire the greatest possible impact, including remote staff
- Ability to clearly articulate a theory of change and direct a team to articulate that theory of change
- Active listening skills, negotiation skills and the ability to work collaboratively with a wide range of stakeholders
- An engaging public speaker
- Ability to think critically, independently and creatively
- Effective at building relationships at all levels of the organisation
- Experience of philanthropy and fundraising for an NGO
Diversity and inclusion
Diversity and inclusion are important principles at OG. We believe that diversity and inclusion make teams stronger and more effective. We are committed to fair and equitable employment practices, and are striving to ensure that a variety of voices and experiences are included in our organisation. Our commitment to diversity and our parental leave policy are available to view on our website.
We will consider all applicants who meet most or all of the essential competencies regardless of their identity or background. That said, we know that diverse candidates may be reluctant to apply for jobs where they don’t meet 100% of the criteria outlined in the job description. We encourage anyone to apply who can demonstrate the variety of skills and experiences relevant to meeting the requirements of this role.
We recognise that many diverse experiences and perspectives are not represented in our current workforce, and are seriously underrepresented across the non-profit sector in general, and as such, we particularly welcome applications from people with disabilities, people of colour, people from marginalised backgrounds, and members of the LGBTQIA+ communities. We will use positive action under the Equality Act 2010 to appoint from these groups if two candidates are equally qualified. We also value flexible working and are open to those who would want to work part-time in this role.
To learn more about our application process and receive advice on how to prepare in such a way as to showcase your full potential, please find our Application Guide on our website.
What we offer
The successful candidate will be offered an annual salary of £80,000 plus 10% employer-contributed pension. Please note that OG has fixed salary scales, with the possibility of step increases with strong performance. When hiring we always hire at the bottom of a band and do not enter negotiations with new employees as negotiations have been historically shown to disadvantage women and minorities.
We take our team’s wellbeing and professional development seriously. In addition to a competitive salary, we offer:
- A commitment to work/life balance, with a 4-day work week at 28 hours
- A generous holiday entitlement of 20 days holidays per year, plus bank holidays and office closure between Christmas and New Year’s that does not count towards your holiday entitlement (and expectation that you fully disconnect when taking time off)
- A market-leading pension of 10%
- A progressive parental leave policy, including 26 weeks paid leave for both parents
- Flexible working with plenty of opportunities to come together as a team.
- Support for your professional development as part of Opportunity Green, with a budget to support your learning & development plus opportunities to lead projects, publish content, learn from experts, work directly with policymakers and stakeholders, and take part in conferences and events.
- However, it is important to note that while this role is permanent, employment is always reliant on Opportunity Green continuing to receive philanthropic support from our funders, which we expect every member of the team to play their part in working towards.
