Senior Philanthropy Officer
Salary: c£36,300 per annum (plus Inner London Allowance £3,333 if applicable).
Location: Flexible Hybrid or Remote. (If remote, most of our major donors are based in London, so travel to London as needed for meetings and events will be a requirement of the role).
Contract / Hours: Permanent - Full-Time - 35 hours per week.

A bit about the role
Action for Children aims to deliver substantial growth from our high value audience over the next five years, with the Philanthropy and Trusts Team playing a vital role in achieving that ambition, working together with the Partnerships, Events and High Value Operations teams.
You will work to secure gifts from major donors and family foundations to deliver a wide range of organisational priority projects and services, also contributing to the development of the philanthropy pipeline to support the team's growth strategy.

How you'll help to create brighter futures
- Deliver an annual individual income target, focussing on securing 4- 6 figure donations from major donors and family foundations including reporting income against high standards of accountability.
- Initiate and develop long-term relationships with major donors and family foundations, to enable the delivery of challenging income targets.
- Develop and implement bespoke solicitation and stewardship plans for a portfolio of existing supporters and new prospects.
- Contribute to a communication and stewardship programme, seeking out opportunities to actively promote the impact of our work to current supporters and inspire future involvement.
- Collaborate with fundraising colleagues to track and report on prospecting activities, remaining supporter focussed and maximising opportunities to enrich and develop donor journeys.
- Take responsibility for ensuring that relationships with major donors and family foundations reach their full potential, and that the charity delivers on its commitment to funders.
- Work closely with the Philanthropy Manager, Trust Manager and Prospect Research Manager to identify and cultivate new prospects in line with departmental needs and to identify and translate project information into compelling fundraising and stewardship materials.
- Contribute to the overall efficiency and effectiveness of the Philanthropy and Trusts team through annual planning and reporting processes, maintaining written and electronic records of donors, in compliance with data protection legislation.

About the role
This is a new role within the Philanthropy and Strategic Partnerships team responsible for developing and leading our major donor programme. Myeloma UK is embarking on an ambitious five-year income generation strategy, which aims to increase income from £5m to £10m by 2028. This position will play a critical role, working alongside the Head of Philanthropy and Strategic Partnerships to double the income we raise from major donors and family trusts by securing 5-6 figure grants for a range of innovative and life changing programmes – including patient and family support, research and advocacy. The Philanthropy Manager is also responsible for managing and supporting the Philanthropy Officer in securing mid to high level donations from individuals.
The major donor programme at Myeloma UK is established - we have a strong community of existing high-level supporters and have identified significant potential donors within our community - but these opportunities have not been fully leveraged in the past. Building on this foundation, and a major fundraising Gala planned for Spring 2024, there is a significant opportunity to transform this area of fundraising and this role will be instrumental in delivering a step change in our approach. The role requires outstanding relationship building skills, and the ability to work with high-net-worth individuals, to build credibility and trust and inspire them to support Myeloma UK.
About you
You will be an experienced major donor fundraiser with the ability to secure 5-6 figure gifts and lead others to do the same. You will be a strategic thinker, who is ready to lead and implement our major donor strategy alongside the Head of Philanthropy and Strategic Partnerships.
We need someone with exceptional relationship management skills with the ability to nurture high value relationships and also work closely with senior colleagues, Trustees and other volunteers to build deep and long-lasting donor relationships. It will be crucial to work closely with colleagues across the charity to identify fundraising priorities, develop fundraising propositions and involve them in the cultivation and stewardship of key relationships.
You will be a skilled communicator and negotiator with the ability to communicate complex scientific information in an engaging way. We need someone who can build relationships from scratch, uncover donor motivations and convey the importance of Myeloma UK’s work to inspire support.

My Name’5 Doddie Foundation was set up by rugby legend, Doddie Weir, who was diagnosed with Motor Neuron Disease (MND) in 2017. A devastating disease with no effective treatments and no cure, each of us have a 1:300 lifetime risk of developing MND. The condition takes the life of one third within a year of diagnosis and half within two years.
The Foundation has a single, clear vision: a world free of MND. Funding research lies at the heart of everything we do; it’s what allows world-leading experts to investigate potential drugs, expedite new treatments and, fundamentally, work towards finding a cure for this disease. In April 2023, we launched our ambitious new research strategy “Catalysing a Cure” which outlines our continued commitment to our vision and to all people affected by MND.
About the role
The post-holder will have a strategic mindset, a track record of successful research management and experience of drug-discovery, gained either in the bio-pharmaceutical industry or an academic setting. The role’s core responsibility will be to lead on the implementation of strategic projects and funding programmes in priority areas, to support the implementation of our research strategy. This will include working with the MND community to identify research barriers, designing bespoke solutions and strategic partnerships, then administering, monitoring, evaluating and reporting on the performance of awards, ensuring the outputs are of the highest quality and supporting the charities activities.
Key responsibilities
Work closely with the MND research community to identify key research challenges and engage with all relevant stakeholders to build consensus and develop detailed scopes for future projects, funding programmes or partnerships.
Lead the development, peer review and management of strategic funding programmes in priority research areas by:
- Delivering competitive funding calls according to AMRC guidance, including developing and overseeing dedicated peer review processes with the right expertise and knowledge in place to provide robust due diligence;
- Working closely with the fundraising team to identify and engage potential co-funders (philanthropic, industry, investors) to secure major gifts;
- Managing project set-up, including contracting, the development of detailed project plans, including go/no-go milestones and budgets;
- Building and managing relationships with award holders and maintain regular communication through the project life cycle;
- Managing and overseeing delivery of approved programmes, including monitoring of progress according to agreed timelines and deliverables (including written updates, site visits and formal reports) and managing project finances, including reviewing and approval of invoices and monitoring project expenditure;
- Working with the Directors of Research and Finance to ensure that accurate research finance information is available for organisational budgeting and planning.
Lead on the development and management of strategic partnership opportunities to support the implementation of the Foundation’s research strategy by;
- Championing opportunities for potential partnerships, preparing proposal documents, briefing and engagement plans to develop relationships as well as acting as a liaison with both internal and external stakeholders;
- Leading on implementation of strategic partnerships including the development of operational models and contractual frameworks etc.;
- Being responsible for delivery of strategic partnerships, as well as their ongoing monitoring and evaluation.
Identify opportunities to communicate the impact of our research, and work closely with other members of the team to develop engaging content for our supporters.
Skills and experience required
- Educated to PhD level or with equivalent experience in biomedical science (e.g. biology, pharmacology, medicinal chemistry);
- Working experience of drug-discovery, gained either in the bio-pharmaceutical industry or an academic setting;
- A track record of successful inception, design and delivery of large research programmes and project portfolios involving multiple organisations;
- A strategic mindset with experience of operating with varying levels of ambiguity and uncertainty, with the ability to create clarity of direction;
- Experience of liaising with senior individuals in a variety of organisations with an ability to create favourable working relationships;
- Proven project management skills, with the ability to manage multiple projects at the same time;
- A great communicator, with excellent written and oral skills and the ability to maintain relationships with a wide variety of individuals, including those within the Foundation, researchers and clinicians, relevant organisations and industry bodies, people living with MND, and other relevant charities;

The Head of Philanthropy will lead Butterfly Conservation's major gifts, corporate fundraising, and legacy strategies - to deliver the high-value relationships and achieve the significant income growth that we know is possible.
Using your expertise, you will develop our national Corporate Fundraising, enabling us to secure more varied and multi-faceted partnerships, whilst also driving our small but growing Major Donor and Legacy functions.

With a new 5-year strategic plan recently approved by the Board of Trustees, Cathedral Music Trust has reached an exciting point in its journey, as we begin the next stage of development and growth. In your role as Interim Development Director, covering for the current Director while she is on maternity leave, your key focus will be to drive fundraising at Cathedral Music Trust, working closely with the Chair of Trustees and the Chair of Development to achieve the financial targets set out in our strategic plan.
You will have management responsibility for the Trust’s Development Office, overseeing the work of our Digital and Communications Manager and our Development Officer and line managing these two roles whilst also working to inspire our volunteer team across the UK in delivering a vibrant programme of events and recruitment activities.
As Interim Director of Development, you will be responsible for generating income for Cathedral Music Trust at a national level, including oversight of our regular giving and legacy programmes and targeting major donors, trusts and foundations. The Trust’s efforts to engage major donors is a relatively new area of fundraising, and you will play a vital role in building momentum in this area.
The successful candidate will have a background and experience in fundraising, possessing strong interpersonal, communication, planning and organisational skills. ESSENTIAL SKILLS

- Develop, implement, and review effective Major Donor, Legacy and Corporate fundraising models to ensure the charity’s funding requirements are successfully achieved.
- Contribute to the development and implementation of the charity’s overall Income Generation Strategy.
- Build and manage relationships with existing and prospective individual Major Donors, to secure long-term support and seek uplift of donations wherever possible. Continuously review progress and quality achieved in Major Donor fundraising.
- Oversee the implementation of a legacy giving programme to raise awareness of the importance of legacy income to the charity. Secure increased legacy pledges from members, supporters and the general public.
- Plan, lead and develop a corporate and commercial fundraising strategy to deliver sustainable income growth. Identify and develop new partnership opportunities to significantly increase income for the charity and oversee effective management of existing corporate partners to retain, develop and grow long term income.
The successful candidate will have the following skills & experience:
- Extensive experience of successful philanthropic fundraising, with a proven track-record of raising significant income within major gifts, legacies, and corporate partnerships.
- Ability to develop, plan and implement fundraising plans and strategies to meet income targets and deadlines.
- Extensive experience of writing inspiring and compelling case for support communications.
- Excellent people management skills, with demonstrable experience of leading, developing and motivating a diverse team across a range of functions.
- Creative and innovative with the ability to turn funding requirements into exciting propositions.
