EXTERNAL RELATIONS

The External Relations (ER) unit comprises four complementary functions: Private Fundraising, Marketing & Mobilization, Policy & Advocacy and Operations & Analytics. To enable IRC to deliver our Strategy100 commitments, the ER unit established a bold new approach that enhances our ability to raise diverse and flexible funding aligned with IRC’s top priorities, while raising our profile and influence. The ER unit is international, with colleagues in more than 10 offices globally.

The Purpose of the Role

As Director of Communications, UK, you lead IRC UK’s core communications strategy with the objectives of growing our profile, influencing policy, driving income, and building our reputation. This is done by taking a strategic approach to generating effective messaging for cross-team use, creatively collaborating to produce cut-through external products across media and digital channels, and generating top tier media coverage in collaboration with communications, advocacy and fundraising colleagues globally. In this role you will be expected to use expert judgment to manage IRC UK’s reputation, as well as ensure media and digital outputs protect clients, staff and programming from harm. 

The Director will report to the UK Executive Director and the Acting Senior Director of Global Public Affairs. The Director will collaborate closely with the Director for Digital Engagement, UK Advocacy Director, and the Director of UK Mass Markets to meet the organization’s strategic objectives surrounding profile, income and influence.

Scope and Authority

Authority:

●The role holder sets strategic direction for UK communications, with a focus on earned media, public advocacy and organic digital.

●The role oversees the UK comms operational budget, with access to the Global External Relations budget.

●The role has the authority to brief journalists with agreed messaging and act as spokesperson for the organisation.

●The Director will line manage the communications team and other positions when required.

●The role is a key member of the UK Senior Management Team, with collective responsibility for the leadership, culture and efficacy of IRC UK.

Key Working Relationships

●Reports to the UK Executive Director and Acting Senior Director Global Public Affairs & Communications.

●Close collaboration with External Relations staff in the UK, US and globally, including Policy and Advocacy, Mass Markets, Fundraising, Awards Management, Digital Engagement, Entertainment Relations, Creative Studio, and Experiential Marketing.

●Works closely with key country directors, country programme staff and technical unit colleagues.

●Supports policy staff in the IRC President’s Office on key UK messages and policy initiatives involving the IRC President.

KEY ACCOUNTABILITIES

Strategic Direction

●Raise IRC UK's profile, income, influence and brand in the UK market by developing and delivering a 360 comprehensive communications & marketing strategy that reaches target audiences, attracts new supporters, and connects supporters with IRC clients.

●Partner with global external relations leadership to set Key Performance Indicators for achieving the strategy, and drive and monitor progress towards them with the support of your team.

●Contribute to the development and delivery of the UK Strategic Plan.

Team Management & Stakeholder engagement

●Manage a team of communications professionals, setting objectives, portfolio scope, and partnering on professional development opportunities

●Drive creative insights and strategic thinking within the UK comms team and influence / maximize policy, advocacy and fundraising outputs and results

●Lead strategic communications planning to maximize opportunities of partnering with income and influence objectives and outputs

●Ensure the UK Communications Team are clear on systems, processes and organization to drive efficiency and team productivity

●Review team performance quarterly and present on results to global stakeholders

●Work alongside global communications colleagues, Policy & Advocacy colleagues, Digital Engagement and UK Fundraisers to develop appropriate messaging on key proactive and reactive issue areas across the scope of IRC’s work.

●Plan and identify key moments of opportunity for IRC UK Communications according to internal and external landscape and timetables.

●Ensure pro/reactive message accuracy and cut through calls to action that engage audiences for proactive campaigns and news cycle opportunities.

●Develop, commission and drive creative cut-through tactics and products, from revealing IRC research and analysis to emergency media briefings.

●Secure top tier media coverage of IRC’s work, solutions and innovation, balancing mentions with long-form/features and profiles.

●Influence and shape key media and digital narratives around IRC UK priority issues.

●Oversee strategic media opportunities by commissioning, writing, editing and disseminating messaging for multi-channel use includingpress-releases, op-eds, statements, web and social content to secure coverage of the IRC in the UK across print, broadcast and online media.

●Work with global communications colleagues and country office staff to create strong, persuasive and impactful outputs, and to arrange interviews and media visits to frontline work.

●Liaise closely with Fundraising teams to collaborate on timely messaging, client-centered storytelling, digital outputs, and media coverage to bring in donations to the IRC during emergencies and other fundraising appeals.

●Establish close relationships with press counterparts within statutory donor organizations that lead to opportunities to promote IRC in the media.

●Leverage IRC’s President and CEO, and UK Executive Director to grow our profile in the UK, through proposing and implementing op-eds, interviews and other media activities.

●Support, prepare and coach staff, spokespeople and board members for media interviews and visits; and provide guidance across the organisation to dealing with media.

●Build expertise on current and potential issues in the humanitarian NGO arena via research and monitoring of national media and competitors and in liaison with global colleagues.

●Work with the global media colleagues to ensure that IRC has a system for managing media enquiries at all times, as needed.

●Responsible for reporting to the IRCUK board, subcommittees and Executive Director on press activity, trends and upcoming opportunities.

PERSON SPECIFICATION

Experience

About the team

The Philanthropy Team raises income for Impetus and for Impetus partner charities. The team consists of 16 staff. Impetus has an annual income of £10 million, which we are looking to grow to £12–£14 million within the next few years. The team is led by the Director of Philanthropy and Partnerships.

The Philanthropy Team works with major donors, corporates and grant-making trusts, as well as collaboratively with colleagues across the organisation to ensure we make a compelling case to generate new financial commitments and wider support for our work. The team also delivers a high-quality engagement programme of volunteering and pro bono support for Impetus’s corporate partners.

In addition to our direct grants, we have several themed funds that support specific areas of our work, currently Connect and Engage, with plans to launch Skills and Attainment. An important part of this role is working closely with the Investment team to shape compelling cases for each fund, and with the Philanthropy team to connect them with the most suitable donors.

Impetus is driven by a shared belief in tackling the barriers that hold back young people from disadvantaged backgrounds in education and employment. About this role

This is an exciting opportunity to join our dynamic Philanthropy Team as an interim Events Officer. The successful candidate will be a highly organised individual who has a positive, can-do attitude, who enjoys working independently and as part of a team. ​

Impetus has a successful annual programme of fundraising and cultivation events including the Transforming Lives Dinner, the Impetus Triathlon and Impetus Future Party. We are looking for an Events Officer to support our programme of events, while also working creatively to innovate and improve our practices.​

Reporting to the Head of Events, the Events Officer is an integral part of the Impetus team, supporting our calendar of fundraising and engagement events.​

The Events Officer will be involved in all aspects of events management such liaising with venues and suppliers (catering, production, design), working with sponsors, event marketing, guest management and finance tracking. This is a role that will allow the postholder to take a high level of ownership for the sections assigned to them.​

You will join a small, passionate and hardworking Philanthropy team.

Key responsibilities

Event Delivery

• Work with the Head of Events and Events Manager on all Impetus’s major fundraising events, including the Transforming Lives Dinner, the Impetus Triathlon and the Impetus Futures Summer Party.
• Support our calendar of cultivation events such as the Pro Bono Breakfast and Philanthropy Breakfasts.
• Support research and planning of the annual events programme in line with the wider organisational strategy and objectives.
• Assist the Head of Events with on-site event management for all Impetus events.
• Source auction and raffle prizes, management of auction software and fulfilment of prizes.

Event Administration

• Manage the administration of all events, including invitation lists, invoices and general enquiries, working with the Head of Events to improve processes
• Responsible for managing all guest RSVPs across events, keeping guestlists up to date and accurately tracking responses on our CRM system
• Organise all administration resources for events, including name badges, delegate lists and signage
• Support the creation of post event reports, analysing data from each event and trends across previous years for the Philanthropy Team and wider organisation
• Supporting with invoicing, accounting, expenditures and financial reconciliation and assist with monthly reporting on income to Finance
• Proactively use our CRM system to manage event data
• Support on supplier and sponsor relationships

Team Support

• Manage all incoming enquiries for the Events Team via a shared inbox
• Fully comply with all of the organisation’s employment and other policies and procedures
• Provide general support to the Philanthropy Team where required, and work collaboratively with colleagues across the organisation
• Assist with project management, design, and production of all event communications, social media posts and collateral alongside the Communications Team

The role

Evidence and Evaluation Officers are key to generating and synthesising evidence on what works and developing resources to support its translation to policy makers, commissioners and practitioners.

The primary focus of the role is contributing to the Strengthening Families, Supporting Children programme – a flagship initiative involving three large-scale comprehensive evaluations of distinct social work practice models. This is a rare opportunity to contribute to high-impact evaluations that will directly inform national policy. You will join the project team and will work closely with other Evidence and Evaluation Officers and will be supervised by a Senior Evaluation Officer. You will also support commissioned evaluations.

About you

The role requires a strong mix of research and broader professional skills, including communication skills, initiative, and the ability to engage with a wide range of audiences. You will also need a master's degree in social science, social policy, public health, health services, or another related field, or relevant experience equivalent to a master's qualification.

You will have experience of:

• Conducting implementation and process evaluations and delivering outputs to time and to high quality
• Conducting research in sensitive and complex settings, including children’s social care
• Collecting data from children, young people, and families who may be vulnerable
• Analysing quantitative data, including survey and administrative data
• Coding qualitative data using NVivo and familiarity with different qualitative analytical methods

We are seeking a Philanthropy Officer to play a key role in supporting and delivering excellent stewardship for our Patrons and most generous individual donors. The role

The ECRN Training and Development Manager will work closely with the Head of ECRN and the ECRN Training and Development Officer to deliver the British Academy Early Career Researcher Network (ECRN) and Wellcome Leadership and Advancement SHAPE Programme. You will work closely with the Fundraising and Communications Manager to deliver compelling fundraising applications, steward donors, grow our community fundraising, and manage Caxton’s public-facing communications across digital and print. It’s a hands-on, varied role ideal for someone who’s an excellent communicator, highly organised, and motivated to make a difference.

Key Responsibilities

Fundraising

• Research, plan and draft compelling grant and funding applications.
• Maintain and update our CRM system (Beacon), ensuring records are accurate and communications are timely.
• Plan and deliver key supporter events.
• Lead on the development, delivery and stewardship of community fundraising activities, including challenge events.
• Prepare timely and engaging reports and updates for funders.
• Provide stewardship to individual supporters and donors
• Support on implementing our Monitoring and Evaluation Framework to capture meaningful programme insights to support funding applications and reporting.
• Collaborate with colleagues to gather and analyse qualitative data, including quotes, feedback and stories to demonstrate impact.

Communications

• Manage Caxton’s social media channels (Instagram, Facebook, LinkedIn, TikTok, Bluesky), creating engaging, youth-appropriate content that reflects our values and voice.
• Monitor, evaluate and report on social media performance to identify trends and opportunities for growth.
• Write and collect case studies and stories that showcase the experiences and successes of young people.
• Develop and maintain marketing materials, promotional assets, and internal communications tools.
• Maintaining the Caxton website, including writing blog posts and updating content as needed.
• Lead on the implementation of Caxton’s communications calendar to ensure consistent and strategic messaging.
• Strengthen our presence in the community and online through targeted communications initiatives

Person Specification

Essential:

• 2+ years’ experience in fundraising, particularly writing funding applications and/or managing donor relationships.
• Strong written and verbal communication skills with the ability to tailor messages for different audiences.
• Experience managing social media channels for an organisation.
• Confident using design tools (e.g. Canva) and email marketing platforms.
• Highly organised with excellent attention to detail.
• Comfortable working independently and managing multiple priorities.
• Committed to the values of inclusion, equity and youth empowerment.

Desirable:

• Experience using Beacon or another CRM
• Knowledge of the youth or disability sector.
• Basic photography, video or design skills.

Status: Fixed Term Contract for 12 months

Location: Home based in London area

Report To: Founder of The Black Economists Network

Hours: Part Time – commitment of 8 hours per week which must include at least 4 hours on Fridays

Salary: Based on experience; £23- £25 per hour.

Full time salary                      £45,000-48,100 per annum:

Pro-rata’d to                           £9,568-10,400 per annum

The opportunity:

We are looking for a Co-Director to join the team and be responsible for the overall leadership and strategic direction of the organisation.  The successful candidate will work with the Founder and stakeholders to ensure that TBEN fulfils its mission, but also ensuring that it maintains financial sustainability and delivers impactful programs.

This is a brand new role for TBEN and we are looking for someone who can join us and make a real difference to what we are able to deliver.

If you have:

Essential:

• Proven experience as an Economist or a field related to economics and related fields;
• Proven experience as a people manager who has recruited, nurtured and developed a successful team;
• Proven leadership and management experience
• Clear experience managing budgets, understanding funding cycles and financial reporting
• Excellent communication and relationship building skills;
• An in-depth understanding of – and a passion for – promoting diversity and inclusion;
• Experience of working collaboratively and making strategic decisions;
• Excellent organisational skills, multi-tasking and prioritising across multiple projects
• A minimum of a Degree in Economics or closely related within the economics field or relevant transferable qualification in Economics
• Commitment to TBEN’s mission; a deep understanding and passion for promoting racial equity and economic empowerment within Black communities
• Right to work in the UK.

Desirable:

• Organisational experience within a non-profit organisation, think tank or research organisation or an organisation focused on economic development or social justice
• Fundraising or partnership experience
