About us: 

Established in 2021, Opportunity Green is a fast-growing not-for-profit organisation that helps to identify and unlock opportunities to tackle climate change. We build ambitious coalitions, support climate vulnerable countries in international negotiations and find innovative legal pathways to fight climate change. We are now looking for a Climate Economics & Diplomacy Senior Director to expand our work on a climate just economy.

What’s the role? 

Economics is the study of the distribution of finite resources across our planet. And yet the profession often seems to forget that resources really are finite, and that distribution must be equitable. The number one argument we hear against most climate measures is economic: what about growth? What about jobs? What’s the business case? Opportunity Green’s Senior Director will develop our narrative to ward off these questions but more fundamentally, bring economics systems change – and how to influence policymakers to incorporate this change into their thinking - to the forefront of all our work. This is an incredibly exciting opportunity for any economist who believes that the climate movement needs more economic expertise and can bring ideas on how to embed the necessary change in economic thinking to climate policy. You will be OG’s first economist hire (other than the CEO) and you will have the opportunity to shape our economics strategy.

Initially you will work with our established international shipping policy team, working to ensure that the shipping sector which is historically undertaxed, begins to contribute in financial terms to climate vulnerable countries. Meanwhile, many large shipping companies have large revenue which goes to shareholders in the global north. One of your first projects could be to assess the current geographical imbalance of financial flows from the shipping industry, and work alongside our international shipping team to reimagine the economics of the shipping sector to meet our climate goals. 

A very similar argument can be made on the aviation side. The EU Emissions Trading System (ETS) currently only covers intra-EU flights but soon a discussion will be had on whether that should also cover international flights. Opportunity Green believes the EU ETS should cover international flights and that, very importantly, some of the ETS revenue must go to support the climate vulnerable. We are looking for someone who can support both these goals but more fundamentally, raise the profile of both sectors as potential sources of climate finance in broader international climate finance discussions.

However, we recognise that agreeing to raise revenue from aviation and shipping sectors is only the first step. The next step will be to ensure that those revenues actually reach climate vulnerable communities. The Senior Director will work with the international shipping team to expand OG’s policy on the distribution of revenues, with the explicit goal of maximising their support for climate vulnerable communities. You will follow international climate finance discussions and strategically intervene for OG when our goals can be supported. 

Initially you will report to the CEO, while the Chief Strategy and Impact Officer is on parental leave. You will manage a team of three, with one direct line report initially, who are already well established in supporting climate vulnerable countries in the International Maritime Organization.

About the candidate: 

We are looking for someone who can think strategically about how to gain the support of policymakers in the global north to support the most climate vulnerable across the world. 

We are looking for a candidate with: 

• An inspirational leadership style, who is brave enough to tell the truth about the climate crisis but is also respectful of international policymakers, who can use detailed economic arguments to inspire ambition. 

Desirable skills and experience: 

We do not expect any candidate to have all the skills listed below but rather we look for transferable skills and potential as well as past experience. 

• Economics degree or equivalent working experience 
• Experience working with policymakers to improve and drive ambition 
• Experience of generating ideas to drive economics systems change and crafting an easily understandable narrative that can be communicated to policymakers around that change 
• Ability to get to grips with technological and policy detail around aviation, shipping, buildings, steel and agriculture as necessary and to know when that detail is needed in policymaker meetings 
• Experience of leading a team and working with staff to inspire the greatest possible impact, including remote staff 
• Ability to clearly articulate a theory of change and direct a team to articulate that theory of change 
• Active listening skills, negotiation skills and the ability to work collaboratively with a wide range of stakeholders
• An engaging public speaker 
• Ability to think critically, independently and creatively
• Effective at building relationships at all levels of the organisation 
• Experience of philanthropy and fundraising for an NGO

What we offer 

The successful candidate will be offered an annual salary of £80,000 plus 10% employer-contributed pension. Please note that OG has fixed salary scales, with the possibility of step increases with strong performance. When hiring we always hire at the bottom of a band and do not enter negotiations with new employees as negotiations have been historically shown to disadvantage women and minorities.

Senior Ecologist

About the role

We are looking for a new team member to use their skills and experience to make a difference to peoples’ lives, encourage sustainability and help protect and improve the natural environment.

Our vision and mission have never been more relevant.  Across the UK governments are pledging investment and action on walking and cycling with an increasing demand for high quality infrastructure. As part of this we are keen to further develop the National Cycle Network as a network for nature, as well as people. To help achieve this Sustrans produced a Biodiversity Action Plan (BAP) in October 2023.

As the Senior Ecologist you will advise staff on all ecological aspects of Sustrans work across the north of England, as well as parts of Scotland and Wales (as required). 

In collaboration with colleagues and partners across a wide range of disciplines, you will undertake field surveys, manage ecological and arboricultural sub-consultants, prepare reports to support planning applications and use your expertise to help shape the design of new walking and cycling paths so that they benefit people and wildlife.

Candidates should be based within the geographical area with regular travel expected to either hub base in Manchester or Leeds.

About you

You should be a skilled ecologist with significant experience in relevant previous roles and a higher-level vocational qualification, or degree in ecology or associated subject.

Your expertise will help to embed best ecological practice across the charity and shape our approach to delivering biodiversity improvement as part of route management and construction activity across the UK, with an emphasis on projects in our Northern region.

As an excellent communicator, you will have good verbal and written communications skills demonstrable in ability to communicate effectively to a range of different audiences. You will also be skilled in ecological report writing including reviewing and interpreting third party reports.

In2scienceUK’s aim is to promote social mobility and diversity in science, technology, engineering and maths. We do this by leveraging the skills and passion of researchers and STEM professionals to support young people (16+) from low socio-economic backgrounds to achieve their potential and progress to degrees and careers in STEM.

The successful applicant will be joining In2scienceUK at an exciting point in its mission having recently launched a number of new initiatives, both in-person and online, to support young people build the skills, knowledge and confidence to build successful careers in STEM.

Role Summary:

We are looking for an experienced Safeguarding Manager to join our growing team and own our safeguarding processes end to end. This is a crucial role to ensure the safety of the young people we work with and that In2scienceUK provides a safe environment for all.

This role is part time and contract based and would be ideal for someone who has significant experience of safeguarding and child protection law, as well as experience

in carrying out safeguarding audits, implementing safeguarding processes for both in person and online offers, as well as internal and external safeguarding training.

Duties and Responsibilities:

• Review and audit existing safeguarding practices and procedures throughout the organisation.

• Manage and deliver a plan to improve practices and ensure compliance with all relevant legislation and guidance.

• Produce safeguarding policies, codes of conduct, and any other documentation needed to meet our commitment to safeguarding.

• Design and deliver effective in-person and online safeguarding training and guidance for trustees, staff, volunteers, partners and beneficiaries.

• Provide safeguarding support and guidance for our volunteers and partners, particularly concerning work experience placements and mentoring.

• Manage safeguarding concerns and disclosures as they arise, and escalate concerns in line with our safeguarding policies including making external referrals. 

• Ensure that our safeguarding records and processes are in compliance with Child Protection Law and GDPR regarding the processing of data and acting as a data controller.

• Responsible for fostering a culture of ‘safeguarding first’ across the organisation and with our volunteers, ensuring that our activities are designed with safeguarding embedded. 

• Stay up to date with all legislation and guidance on Safeguarding, child protection and protecting Adults at Risk within locations In2scienceUK operates and provides a single point of contact for this support - currently England, Wales and Scotland with ambition for future expansion.

• Support with the development of any policy, guidance and practice that relates to safeguarding our stakeholders, e.g. the legal status of work experience hosts, health and safety, DBS checks.

Knowledge and Experience:

Essential:

• Level 4 safeguarding accreditation.

• Strong existing knowledge of safeguarding and child protection laws in England, Wales and Scotland.

• Experience of implementing safeguarding processes to online, in-person and residential programme delivery designed for young people 16+.

• Experience of designing and delivering relevant training appropriately tailored to different audiences.

• Experience of working across departments and with trustees to produce appropriate processes and policies.

• Experience of dealing with being the first point of contact for complex cases for both children and adults at risk and making necessary referrals.

About the Role

In your role you will be responsible for developing, delivering and overseeing RSPB’s wider countryside conservation work and managing associated staff on the islands to ensure conservation of the many species and habitats of international importance and so ensure delivery of relevant outcomes of RSPB’s Saving Nature Strategy across Orkney. The role will lead, manage and develop the conservation team in the area, helping to deliver a work programme focused on our priority landscapes including some of Scotland’s rarest and most iconic species and habitats.

This will be achieved by using detailed knowledge and experience of the appropriate conservation toolkit to ensure we achieve our objectives. This may include site safeguard casework, species recovery work, land management advice, overseeing conservation projects and engagement in land use and marine policy.

This post will have a key role in instigating and managing programmes and projects across the Area and in association with RSPB colleagues. This includes those led by RSPB in the local area such as Species on the Edge and those where delivery is achieved across wider partnerships. You will be proactive with other island stakeholders to deliver ambitious targets for key marine, upland, wetland, peatland & farmland species and habitats. The position will have an important external role, building positive relationships with key partners and stakeholders so that RSPB’s policies and messages are understood and furthered within relevant partnerships and fora. As the conservation leader within the area team, you will contribute expertise to the Area management structures, monitoring and reporting on the work plan and development of new work plans and/or project ideas. You will also be expected to contribute expertise and experience to RSPB’s policy and advocacy work and contribute to the delivery of our funding and communications objectives, through communicating our conservation messages in various ways.

You will ensure we can identify threats to priority species and habitats and work with internal staff and external stakeholders to develop and implement projects, strategies and programmes of work to address these threats. You will lead on casework response in the islands and manage projects and internal budgets and staff. You will help shape where we carry out species recovery work across the islands and help spot out future opportunities to work on our key species and habitats. • Ability to rapidly analyse significant quantities of information, prioritise and balance a diverse workload often to tight deadlines
• Sufficient understanding of landscape scale conservation; land use and management; planning systems; to be able to lead casework response and advise staff on appropriate responses and interventions.

Desirable skills, knowledge and experience:

• Experience of raising funds from external sources for projects
• Experience of public engagement work
• Experience of major site conservation casework
• Specialist conservation knowledge in relevant areas, such as wetland, upland, farmland, marine conservation
• Experience of living in remote areas
