The Role
What will I be doing?
As the Community Support Officer (Engagement and Volunteering), you’ll be at the heart of our work to build a vibrant, inclusive physics community. You’ll be the first point of contact for our volunteer-led Groups, Nations, and Branches — helping them to thrive, connect, and deliver meaningful activities that bring physics to life.
Your role will be varied, people-focused, and purpose-driven. You’ll:
- Support and empower volunteer committees with planning, elections, onboarding, and governance
- Design and deliver engaging training and resources to help volunteers feel confident and connected
- Celebrate and recognise contributions through awards, spotlight stories, and appreciation campaigns
- Coordinate inclusive events and forums that foster collaboration and community
- Use data and feedback to evaluate impact, improve experiences, and inform decision-making
- Champion collaboration and best practice across committees, departments, and the wider IOP network
You’ll work closely with passionate physicists, volunteers, and colleagues across departments — from Communications and EDI to Learning and Skills — to ensure every member feels supported, valued, and inspired.
Projects you work on may include:
- Creating a new Volunteering Guide and Welcome Handbook
- Designing and delivering onboarding and training for new committee members
- Organising flagship events like the annual Committee Welcome Day
- Helping shape our first Volunteering Development Plan and inclusive volunteering strategy
You’ll also be part of a wider team of Community Support Officers, each with their own focus area, working together to build a connected, thriving membership community.
Who will I work with?
As a Community Support Officer (Engagement and Volunteering), you’ll be part of a dynamic, collaborative environment where relationships matter. You’ll work closely with:
- The Community Support team and Student & Early Career Support Officer – sharing insights, coordinating efforts, and supporting each other to deliver a seamless member experience.
- The wider Membership department – especially colleagues in Professional Registration, Events & Conferences, and CPD – to ensure volunteer activities align with member development and recognition.
- Cross-functional teams across the IOP – including Science and Innovation, Education and Workforce, EDI, and Public Engagement – to embed inclusive practices and amplify the impact of volunteer-led initiatives.
- Members across our Groups, Nations and Branches (GNBs) – building trusted relationships with committee members, volunteers, and local champions to support their work and celebrate their contributions.
- External partners and sister societies – occasionally collaborating on joint events, campaigns, or volunteer initiatives that extend our reach and deepen our impact.

About the role
This is an exciting opportunity to join the Individual Giving & Legacies Team at Dementia UK, where you will play a key role in growing two of the charity’s most vital income streams, gifts in Wills and in memory fundraising. Together this amounts to over £8 million annually, representing more than a quarter of our total income.
As a Legacy and In Memory Executive, you will help increase awareness of gifts in Wills and maximise opportunities for in memory giving through the delivery of compelling, timely and supporter-focused communications. You will lead on the development and implementation of multichannel marketing campaigns, including copywriting, compiling design briefs and liaising with suppliers and agency partners to ensure that all activity is insight-led and aligned with strategic objectives.
You will be responsible for stewarding supporters with sensitivity and care, managing enquiries and pledges related to gifts in Wills and coordinating the delivery of meaningful journeys for in memory donors. Working closely with internal teams and external suppliers, you will oversee the production of marketing and collateral, managing relevant content across social media channels and sourcing case stories for use across the charity.
To be successful in this role, you will have experience delivering fundraising or marketing projects in any area. You should be confident using a relationship database to inform and report on stewardship activity and ensuring data is used effectively to enhance supporter journeys. We are looking for an experienced IDVA to join our dynamic team in Tower Hamlets, working with people who have experienced domestic violence and abuse. You will be working as part of a multidisciplinary team.
As an IDVA you are responsible for carrying out risk and needs assessments, safety planning and providing support and intervention to victim/survivors of domestic violence identified at Poplar jobcentre. In addition to this you will build relationships with, and provide advice, guidance and training to external professionals.
About You
You will need a passion for working with victim/survivors and a thorough understanding of domestic abuse and its impact on women and their children, as well as experience of providing emotional and practical support and strong casework management skills.
You will have the skills to provide effective crisis intervention, carry out risk assessments, safety planning, assessment of needs and individual support planning. You should have demonstrable experience of working in an IDVA or similar position with this or a similar client group.

About the ESU
The English-Speaking Union delivers high-quality oracy education programmes and projects across England and Wales. Role Overview
ESU Competition Leads host our ESU competitions, including the ESU Schools’ Mace Debating Competition, the ESU Public Speaking Competition and the ESU Performing Shakespeare Competition. The ESU Competition Lead is responsible for ensuring the smooth running of events (heats) throughout the competitions, with duties including Zoom hosting and MCing. If required, Competition Leads may sit on the judges’ panel and provide constructive feedback to students and teachers participating. You will also support and provide guidance for our volunteer judges, ensuring they have a positive experience while volunteering with the ESU. NB The ESU is committed to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children and young people. Therefore, we expect all contractors to share this commitment. Responsibilities
For all competitions you will:
- Support and promote the charitable objectives of the ESU, acting as an ambassador for the organisation
- Assist the ESU Competitions Team in ensuring competition heats run smoothly and act as point of contact for schools and volunteers on the day of heats
- MC or compere Zoom and in-person heats, engaging both students and audience whilst following ESU scripts
- Be the technical host for Zoom ESU competition heats, setting up and hosting Zoom meetings, creating break-out rooms and acting as tech support throughout heats
- Provide accurate heat results in a timely manner to the ESU Competitions Team
- Support volunteer judges and ensure they have a positive and rewarding experience
- If required, be part of judging panels at ESU competition heats (which may include acting as chair judge) offering fair, positive, constructive and unbiased feedback based on our judging criteria
- Follow the ESU’s safeguarding policies and provide oversight of safeguarding and equity requirements, in line with ESU policies
- Signpost teachers and volunteers to resources, other ESU programmes and additional support, such as through the ESU website

Person Specification
Essential criteria:
- Be over 18 years of age and have the right to work in the UK
- Be confident in engaging with and motivating young people of different abilities and backgrounds
- A passion for education, social mobility and/or developing young people's oracy skills
- Fully proficient in the English language with excellent spoken language skills
- A confident and engaging public speaker with experience hosting events or judging

Core Responsibilities
With proven leadership experience in the charity sector, you must bring a passion for our work and an ability to translate strategy into action. A key aspect of your role will be overseeing the financial health of the organisation ensuring effective budgeting, forecasting and resource management. You will work closely with the Fundraising Manager to develop and implement a sustainable fundraising strategy, identifying and securing diverse income streams (e.g. grants, donations corporate partnerships), as well as working with the Financial Director and the Board to prepare annual accounts and financial reports.
You will be responsible for ensuring the charity operates in accordance with its constitution, policies and legal requirements; maintaining high standards of accountability, safeguarding and risk management across all aspects of the organisation. You will support the Board of Trustees by providing timely and accurate information to ensure effective governance and decision making.
Alongside these skills we are looking for an inspirational and entrepreneurial leader who can galvanise and optimise the performance of our team and dedicated volunteers, ensuring the effective delivery of our programmes. You will be someone who can think strategically but is not afraid to roll their sleeves up and has an energetic, positive and can-do approach. To be successful you will also be adept at managing a range of stakeholders and be credible and inspiring as an ambassador, equipped with excellent communication and influencing skills to promote TimeGivers.

Our unique Online Reading Volunteer programme currently supports over 3,200 children a year. About the Role
The Finance Assistant has responsibility for a variety of finance functions including the purchase and sales ledger, making payments to suppliers, invoicing Corporate Partners and Schools and reconciling bank accounts. They support the day to day running of the Finance Team ensuring that tasks such as posting invoices, reconciling customer accounts, supporting credit control and chasing non-payments are carried out in a timely and accurate fashion.
The Finance Assistant reports to and works closely with the Head of Finance and plays a critical role in resolving finance queries from Chapter One colleagues, maintaining accurate financial records, supporting internal processes and contributing to the effective financial management of Chapter One.
This role is ideal for someone who has experience in a similar position within a finance team and has good working knowledge of accounting principles and a basic understanding of income for charities. They will work remotely and will need to have access to a reliable internet connection. This role is subject to an Enhanced DBS check, and the post-holder must be permanently based in the UK at the time of applying and for the duration of their employment.
All Chapter One employees are required to attend quarterly in-person staff meetings held in various locations across the UK (all expenses covered) as well as monthly all staff virtual meetings which are held on the first Wednesday of each month from 12:00 - 13:00; participation is mandatory.
