Join Us as a Charity Trustee: Help Shape the Future of Befriending 

Are you passionate about building a more connected society, where no one feels forgotten or alone? 

Befriending Networks, the world’s largest network of befriending projects, is recruiting two trustees to help us champion the vital role of befriending in reducing loneliness and social isolation.

Around 1 in 6 people worldwide experience loneliness. Befriending services respond to this need by matching people in their communities for planned social activities that build meaningful connections.

Befriending Networks supports over 300 member organisations to deliver quality befriending services, through sector-specific training, events, resources, awards and 1:1 support. 

As a Befriending Networks trustee, you will be part of a welcoming and active board that enables befriending services across the UK and beyond to thrive. You will join us at an exciting time, as we begin to deliver our next strategic steps as an organisation. 

Following a recent board skills review, we are seeking two individuals who can offer skills in the following areas: 

• Income generation – This trustee will have an enterprising mindset, with experience of strategic fundraising, working with grantmakers, trusts and foundations or devising corporate sponsorships. Their guidance will help our charity to move into new ways of generating income, allowing us to become more resilient and advance our vision for a society where the importance of meaningful connections is valued. 
   
• Sector influence and advocacy – This trustee will be a great communicator, with a skill for forming and sustaining effective relationships. They will have a broad professional network which might include national or international connections. They may have connections which include the private sector, academia, thinktanks or investors interested in making social impact. Their experience might include research, policy making or campaigning. Their guidance will help us advocate for the befriending sector with greater impact and effectiveness. 

By joining the Befriending Networks board, you will play an integral role in moving our charity forward and helping us champion the impact of befriending on loneliness and isolation.  If you have the skills we’re looking for and are energised by working collaboratively to help organisations (and others) succeed, we’d love to hear from you. 

We are keen to hear from applicants with diverse lived experiences, especially those currently underrepresented in trustee boards. No previous board experience is required and you do not need to meet all requirements listed in the role descriptions to apply. 

Location: Remote/UK-wide (with one in-person meeting in Edinburgh per year) 
Time commitment: Approximately 4-6 hours per month. We have 6 board meetings per year (5 online and 1 in-person)

Our Board Executive will review all expressions of interest and will want to set up an online call with applicants to discuss their suitability for the role.

At MS Society all our activities and services are shaped by our MS community – people affected by MS, volunteers, staff and other experts. We aim to raise as much awareness as possible about MS, to ensure that people with MS have the support and information they need.

We've been successful in securing funding from Wales and West Utilities for a 'test and learn' Community Connections project (covering Wales and the South West of England) which will run until March 2026. 

Community Connections aims to: 

• Connect people with, and affected by, MS across Wales and the South West of England (Cornwall, Devon, Somerset, Bristol, Gloucestershire, and Wiltshire) with services, activities and resources to enable them to live well with MS.
• Develop links with local service providers which enable people with, and affected by, MS to access support and activities in their local areas, whilst improving connections within the community
• Provide information and guidance on a range of subjects, including advice about finances, cost of living-related information, energy efficiency information, carbon monoxide awareness and the Priority Service Register. 

As part of the project, we’re looking for volunteers to deliver MS Awareness sessions to partner organisations that the project will signpost to (such as Citizens Advice Bureau). MS Awareness volunteers will help us to ensure that these partner organisations are equipped to support people with MS (who will be accessing their activities and services). To help people to understand how people with MS feel.

Here’s an overview of what will be involved - 

• Delivering talks (via Zoom/Teams) to organisations to increase their understanding of MS and its symptoms. 

• Signposting to the relevant MS Society team for further information and practical support, as required.

• Note taking and helping us understand how effective sessions were 

• Attending regular volunteer support groups, where you will debrief and share experiences with other volunteers, as well as receive support from your supervisor.

We will support you to develop the skills you need for this role which will include an induction into all the areas outlined. You will have a chance to discuss your role and any additional needs you may have with us.

We appreciate any volunteering help that you can offer YBTC and want to make sure that our

volunteers have a positive experience with us. We pledge to support you as much as we can.

We want to ensure that volunteering with us does not feel too daunting, so the exact tasks might

vary depending on your circumstances. However, some typical tasks may include:

· Asking people you know who might be willing to have a collection box in their business

· Approaching local businesses to display the boxes and collect loose change from their customers

· Building and maintaining relationships with your box holders to inspire loyalty and encourage people to continue giving year after year

· Collecting the boxes in your area as and when required and taking to your YBTC contact

We’re looking for new Trustees for the Board of Spear Bournemouth Trust, which runs the Spear Programme in partnership with Resurgo Trust, equipping and empowering unemployed 16 – 24-year-olds to overcome barriers to employment and turn their lives around by moving into sustainable work or further education.

Responsibilities

Governance and meeting attendance

• Attend Trustee meetings (approx. 6-9 times a year)
• Responsibility for the governance of the Trust, including meeting any legal and Charity Commission requirements
• Ensure the Trust complies with all legal duties including annual reporting, audits, insurance and data management

Local relationship building

• Build relationships with individuals in local churches to build and develop a network of supporters for the Spear Programme
• Act as a spokesperson for Spear Bournemouth, building the charity’s profile locally

Income generation

• Develop and manage relationships with local donors or companies (working with Spear coaches and other trustees)
• Steward relationships with funders, keeping them engaged in the work of Spear Bournemouth
• Input into a fundraising strategy (with significant input and support from the Resurgo team) to fundraise ~£120,000 per year to cover the costs of the Spear Programme

Working together

• Develop strong working relationships with fellow Trustees
• Support the Spear coaches in line with Resurgo’s coaching approach, ensuring the centre continues to thrive and deliver outstanding impact

Active participation in and support for church team and mission

• As the Spear programme is run in partnership with local churches, the Trustees will ideally have a personal presence in a Bournemouth-based church and actively work with and support the mission of Love Church, a key partner. As part of this you may be asked to speak at church/events

About the Role

All Trustee positions are voluntary with reasonable expenses remunerated. To be an effective Trustee, you will need to commit up to 1-2 days per quarter to attend and prepare for board meetings which are held virtually.

We are a membership organisation which brings together patient, research and healthcare professional organisations working in MSK health. Working together as an alliance, we have a powerful voice to influence policy and improve standards of care.

• Everyone with MSK conditions receives appropriate, high quality interventions to promote their health and well-being in a timely manner.

ARMA is a registered charity and a limited company, meaning that the board are both trustees of the charity and directors of the company. ARMA is a strong, stable and highly regarded charity with a track record of influence and success. We are relatively small in financial terms with a core budget of circa £100K in addition to project budgets, which vary from year to year. We also have healthy financial reserves.

We value the role our Trustees make. Our Treasurer plays and an important role alongside our CEO overseeing the financial health and integrity of the organisation.

While you may not have held a trustee position before, you will have the ability and professional confidence to work as part of a dynamic board of trustees. You will bring:

• Financial background with a firm understanding and appreciation of income statements and balance sheets, not-for-profit awareness and knowledge

• Proven ability to communicate and explain financial information to members of the board and other stakeholders.

Volunteering is and always will be at the heart of Cats Protection. It is joyful and inclusive. As a charity, working in partnership, together we transform the lives of cats, people and communities.

The difference you will make to cats and people

As a charity we are able to help thousands of cats each year thanks to the generous donations we receive from members of the public. Our fundraising volunteers use their passion for cats and people to raise the vital funds needed to help more cats and kittens in need. As a fundraising volunteer we want to support you to fundraise in whatever way suits you best, whether that’s organising a fundraising event, fundraising online, promoting fundraising activities on social media, completing administration or supporting the development of new fundraising ideas! Whatever your skill set, this could be the role for you!

What we need from you

This is a really flexible role, you can choose what you’d like to get involved with, for example: 

• face-to-face fundraising. Organising or helping with fundraising events, running supermarket collections and fundraising stands, monitoring collection tins 

• online fundraising. Setting up online appeals and writing impactful cat case studies that maximise donations

• marketing. Spreading the word about our fundraising activities, for example on social media and with the local press  

• completing administration. Processing donations, sorting and recording donated goods, completing Gift Aid paperwork

● championing our work. Getting involved with developing new fundraising ideas and increasing community engagement

● photography. Capturing images of cats in care, cats we are helping, events and all things Cats Protection

Time expectation

This is a flexible role that can fit around your other commitments to suit you. You’ll be part of a team raising vital funds while having fun in the process!
