Volunteering in the shop

The Derby Shop has a fresh new look and is our first ever streamlined superstore for customers and supporters – providing a range of pre-loved items at discounted prices. It’s a high volume, fast paced shop bursting with energy, enthusiasm and creativity.

Our Derby Shop Volunteers are in the middle of it all, and there’s plenty to get involved with. You might be sorting and pricing stock, engaging with customers, ringing items through the till, creating fantastic window displays or keeping our shop floor looking organised.

Care Rights UK is a national charity dedicated to championing the rights of people in care. For over 30 years, the organisation has provided information, advice, and support to empower individuals using care services, as well as the relatives and friends who support them.

As a community of families and experts, Care Rights UK campaigns for better lives for people in care. The charity identifies poor practice, highlights examples of good care, and advocates for a stronger, fairer care system.

The Role

Care Rights UK is entering an exciting phase of growth and is seeking to diversify and expand its reach across the UK. To support this next chapter, the organisation is looking to appoint a new trustee to join its established and welcoming Board of Trustees.

The Board plays a vital role in the strategic oversight of the charity, working alongside a small but dedicated staff team led by an experienced CEO. Trustees help guide the organisation’s work, ensuring it continues to provide the national advice line for older people needing care and to campaign effectively for systemic change.

Despite its modest size, Care Rights UK is recognised as a leading voice in the sector, “punching above its weight” through its influence, advocacy, and impact.

Who They Are Looking For

Care Rights UK welcomes applications from people with a positive, can-do attitude and a passion for promoting the rights of older people. The charity is particularly interested in individuals with knowledge or experience of:

About Florence Nightingale Museum

The Florence Nightingale Museum is a much-loved cultural institution that celebrates the life, work and enduring impact of one of history’s most iconic figures. Situated within St Thomas’ Hospital, just across Westminster Bridge, it brings to life the story of Florence Nightingale – pioneer of modern nursing, statistics, and public health reform – through immersive storytelling, personal artefacts, and dynamic exhibitions.

Who we are looking for

We are looking for a confident, collaborative leader with a strategic mindset and a deep appreciation for the museum’s mission. You will bring both passion and pragmatism – able to guide the organisation through an exciting period of development while ensuring sound governance and long-term sustainability.

You will possess:

• Proven strategic leadership with experience chairing boards or leading organisations through growth or change
• Strong governance understanding, including financial oversight and charity board responsibilities
• Excellent communication and influencing skills, able to represent the museum externally and build relationships across sectors

What we're looking for:

Our Friends of Cheltenham are a small, passionate team of volunteers who organise a calendar of local events to raise awareness of, and vital funds for, our services for children. We're looking for more members to join our friendly team, have some fun and make a difference for children in Cheltenham and beyond!

Every term we organise events such as Easter craft sessions, Grandparents Day, and a Swap Shop. Our next events are a big fundraiser in Cheltenham for Childhood Day on Saturday 14th June, a ‘Back to School' session for parents in September, and then we'll be gearing up for Christmas! We always need a few extra people to lend a hand – coming up with ideas, promoting our events locally and on social media, organising events, gathering donations, and being there to chat to local families. 

If you can't commit regularly but are happy to be called upon every now and again, that's great too! Around 90 per cent of our income comes from our supporters and we couldn't continue doing what we do without them. That means, our community fundraising volunteers play a really important part in rallying people together to raise vital funds which help to protect children and prevent abuse.

What you'll do:

• Promote our services and resources for families and children
• Work as a team to plan awareness raising events and fundraising activities
• Talk to parents, carers and other community members about our services that support children and families, such as Childline, Building Connections, local campaigns, and our Schools Service
• Share news about our work and help promote upcoming initiatives
• Help at our big fundraising events such as Childhood Day and Christmas

You will be representing the charity in a professional manner, and will be regularly updated with key information and opportunities to encourage people to get involved.

Pelican Parcels takes pre-loved and new item donations for babies and children up to age 12 and redistributes these to families facing financial hardship via various existing family services in Brighton & Hove and Sussex.

We are the only baby bank in Brighton and Hove!

We are looking for volunteers who are passionate about wanting to help local families. Our warehouse hours are from Monday to Thursday, 10am till 2pm.

Volunteer tasks vary but may include:

• Quality checking clothing, bedlinen, toys, books and other donations.
• Cleaning and safety checking prams, beds and highchairs.
• Greeting people bringing their donations and family service staff when they come to collect an order during course of duties.

Our next warehouse tour and volunteer inductions are on Monday 13th October or Monday 17th November. The training programme will then run on Mondays for four weeks with the option to switch to another day on completion. Please get in touch for more info. 

Role Requirements

• Positive can-do attitude
• A reasonably good level of fitness
• An good understanding of the English language
• Ability to work with other volunteers
• Ability to listen to and follow instructions
• Attention to detail in quality checking donations
• Passionate about helping local families experiencing financial hardship
• Appreciation and respect of the confidential nature of information that may be acquired.

Practical considerations

Our address is Units 1 & 2, Manor Industrial Estate, Newtown Road, Hove, BN3 7BA. We are close to Hove Station and other public transport. There is also free parking locally.

Our hours are 10am till 2pm from Monday to Thursday. We ask that volunteers give at least 2 hours a week during these hours.

We require our volunteers to have a reasonable level of fitness. Occasionally there are heavy bags to carry and other items such as beds and mattresses. This is for when we bring items out to our referral partners, when they collect these for the families they support, and when we bring donations in. We use step ladders to reach items that are on high shelves. There are online safety courses that all our volunteers need to undertake but if any of our volunteers have any prior injuries or medical conditions that prevent them from undertaking certain tasks then they can be excused from these particular tasks.

We provide basic DBS check for volunteers, otherwise we require volunteers to bring in their existing DBS certificates. We do not work directly with the families we support.

What we're looking for

Volunteers can offer their support for a variety of local events and initiatives. To help build a group of passionate people we can call on if we need an extra pair of hands.

Around 90 per cent of our income comes from our supporters and we couldn't continue doing what we do without them. That means, our community fundraising volunteers play a really important part in rallying people together to raise vital funds which help to protect children and prevent abuse.

What you'll do

Helping out when you can at local fundraising and awareness raising events in support of the NSPCC - organised locally by our District Committees, local campaigns team and/or Community Fundraising Manager.

You will be representing the charity in a professional manner. Some examples include:

• Helping in-person events run smoothly
• Childhood Day collections
• Acquiring prizes for events
• Assisting with ticket sales
• Advertising and promoting events through networks and social media

A key role will be to share news about our work in the local community and helping promote upcoming fundraising events and initiatives.

Bright Futures UK is looking for passionate and knowledgeable GCSE Science tutors to provide educational support and a fun, safe learning environment for young people living with serious illnesses.
