 About the role

As digital content officer, you’ll design, edit and optimise our web content to help our users feel empowered throughout their breast cancer experience.

From personal stories and blogs to landing pages and webforms, you’ll support teams across the charity and lead the content creation for some of our key projects and campaigns.

You’ll know content design, search engine optimisation (SEO), user experience (UX) and accessibility best practices like the back of your hand and be able to advise teams on the correct approach for their pages. And with support from our digital analytics manager, you’ll be able to advise teams on how to improve their content to drive conversions. 

Not only will you be able to take the lead, but you’ll also be a team player. You’ll be able to take direction from the digital content manager on bigger projects and collaborate with other members of your team. 

You’ll join the team at an exciting time as we’re amid our digital transformation project. You’ll play a key role in moving our content from the old to the new website. You’ll also help set the standard of content on the new website by training teams on new processes on the new CMS and coaching them on web best practices. 

This role is a 12 month fixed-term contract.

About you

A successful candidate will have a strong background in digital and experience in creating web content that packs a punch. You’ll have a can-do attitude, a methodical approach to your work and enjoy creating content.

You’ll have a comprehensive understanding of content design, accessibility, SEO and UX principles. And know how to take this knowledge and use it to create engaging content that supports our user's and charity’s needs.

Primary location of role and hybrid working

This role can be based in our Cardiff, Glasgow, London or Sheffield office. However, our hybrid working model allows full-time staff members to work up to 3 days per week at home.

About the position 

This is an exciting opportunity to create change at scale, informing and promoting a practical transition to plant-based diets, in order to reduce the number of animals suffering in factory farms. Part of our Farmed Animal Campaigns team, the role will work to increase the quality and availability of plant-based options with major caterers and universities in the UK, impacting hundreds of thousands of meals daily. 

This role also includes an opportunity to support the delivery of a campaign to end the use of farrowing crates, one of the worst forms of cruelty to farmed animals in the UK today. In this role you will support the Senior Manager for Farmed Animal Campaigns to create public-facing campaign assets, and develop compelling research to underpin our policy and industry engagement.

If you are results-oriented, persuasive, organised and, ideally, have knowledge of food and/or farming systems, along with a commitment to animal welfare, then we would like to hear from you. 

Key areas of responsibility:  

• Initiate and maintain relationships with universities, food service companies and public sector institutions to support and oversee their delivery of goals to reduce meat/animal products  

• Work with consultants to develop and deliver our Forward Food culinary training programme to food service professionals, to support their understanding of plant-based food and marketing, and their role in the just protein transition.  

• Identify and support opportunities to encourage people to eat fewer animal products, including working with media and celebrity ambassadors. 

• Conduct environmental impact assessments on menus and food procurement to effectively monitor and report on progress towards meat-reduction goals 

• Deliver compelling and informed advocacy to UK political stakeholders to encourage the adoption of policies that catalyse a just protein transition and better farmed animal welfare. 

• Support development and delivery of HSI UK’s farmed animal campaigns strategies  

• Research and present on industry-related trends and developments in the plant-based food market and alternatives to cage confinement.  

About you 

Our successful candidate will be confident, articulate and creative with a proven track record of supporting the delivery of effective campaigns through research and advocacy. You’ll be a proactive self-starter, and someone who brings positive energy to work within teams. You’ll have a keen eye for detail and accuracy, as well as experience and ability to produce compelling and effective advocacy materials, including analysing scientific data and translating it into meaningful language for stakeholders. You’ll have experience of building strategic relationships in the private or public sector to deliver agreed goals. You will have an ambition and drive for creating positive change for animal welfare, and a willingness to regularly evaluate our progress and impact with a view to further improving our strategies.

• Support the CEO in their role as Data Protection Officer for the trust, taking administrative responsibility for key duties as required.

• Have worked in the not-for-profit or education sector and have an understanding of the critical role that good governance can play in making an organisation impactful and effective.

In support of Mercy Corps’ mission, the global Corporate and Foundation Partnerships team manages Mercy Corps’ fundraising relationships with major global companies and foundations. We set bold visions for the positive social change we can create with our partners, provide outstanding partner services and relationship management, and together build meaningful partnerships that provide value to all parties while creating lasting impact for the local communities where we work. Our partnerships span areas including emergency response, economic and market development, food and water security, climate change, and peacebuilding. We work across many teams at Mercy Corps, including marketing and communications, mass market fundraising, the executive office, and with our programme and country-based colleagues around the world. This position sits within Mercy Corps’ Development team.

The Position 

The Communications Officer, Global Corporate & Foundation Partnerships will focus on two key workstreams: 1) Implementing the communications and profile-raising strategy for the Development team’s $250M Climate: Possible global campaign and 2) Communications projects supporting European corporate and foundation partners. Working closely with the Communications Director, Global Corporate & Foundation Partnerships, and the Senior Director of Development in Europe, this position will coordinate across internal teams, including fundraising relationship managers and communications and marketing team members, and liaise directly with external partners.

Essential Responsibilities 

CLIMATE: POSSIBLE COMMUNICATIONS & PROFILE-STRATEGY SUPPORT (60%)

●Support the execution of the Climate: Possible communications plan, including managing the creation of thought leadership deliverables, developing written and other creative content, and coordinating internal reviews.

●Create an editorial calendar, develop and track an ongoing stream of content for executive and agency social media channels that highlights Mercy Corps’ expertise in climate adaptation programming.

●Event support, including developing briefing documents, talking points, invitation copy, and social media promotion for external climate conferences and events and Mercy Corps-organised corporate and foundation partnership events.

●Create new deliverables and update the existing suite of Climate: Possible marketing materials, as needed.

GENERAL COMMUNICATIONS SUPPORT FOR CORPORATE & FOUNDATION AUDIENCES (35%)

●Contribute to the development and implementation of multi-channel profile-raising strategies in support of the European strategic plan. Contribute to the profile and influence strategy to raise Mercy Corps’ profile with key corporate and foundation donors and prospects.

●Manage emergency response coordination for the Global Corporate and Foundation Partnership teams in partnership with the Global Sr. Communications Officer. Write emergency response communications (creating and sourcing content from internal teams), including email solicitations and updates, and help create donor deliverables, including decks and webinars to support emergency response fundraising amongst Corporate and Foundation partners.

●Source, transform, and create content into compelling Corporate and Foundation audience-specific products, including emails, blog and social posts, pitch decks, fact sheets, and videos.

●Serve as the communications lead, in partnership with corporate relationship managers, for corporate co-fundraising opportunities and submission prizes and competitions.

●Support strategic employee communications efforts for top European corporate partners in partnership with the Employee Engagement Officer.

●Monitor social media accounts of key Corporate and Foundation partners, and draft suggested posts for executive or agency engagement. 

KNOWLEDGE MANAGEMENT AND TEAM PROCESS IMPROVEMENT (5%) 

• Develop and maintain internal documents to track communications projects and evaluate and prioritise communications opportunities with partners.
• Stay abreast and socialize internal communications resources and general fundraising communication trends with the Corporate and Foundation teams. 
• Contribute to Mercy Corps’ ethical fundraising and communications strategy by creating materials in line with our ethical storytelling approach and guidelines.

Minimum Qualifications & Transferable Skills

• 4+ years of experience in corporate or non-profit communications
• Expertise across various marketing and communications specialties, including public relations, social media, digital marketing, and corporate communications.
• Outstanding writer with experience in multiple formats.
• Ability to translate dense, technical, and specific information into compelling and accessible messaging and copy.
• Excellent project management skills, with the ability to manage and prioritise competing demands while maintaining attention to detail. 
• Visual thinker – design skills are a plus; experience working closely with designers.
• Ability to adapt and pivot in a fast-paced environment.
• A strong understanding of relevant fields such as business, communications, marketing, non-profit management, or international development, as demonstrated through practical experience, coursework, or self-directed learning.

The Communications Officer, Global Corporate & Foundation Partnerships, will have demonstrated experience creating high-quality, fit-for-purpose communications deliverables. An outstanding writer and project manager, they will work collaboratively with multiple teams and individuals across many departments to ensure successful project outcomes. Experience in corporate social impact, climate programming, or international development will be a strong asset.

About You

As the Head of Marketing & Development, you will be responsible for bringing the brand of The Postal Museum to life in new and innovative ways to reach ambitious admission and visitor targets -  across all marketing channels, press and media, and in all communications to engage their varied audiences. Additionally, you will be responsible for driving individual giving and developing corporate support for the museum.This is a strategic leadership role, in which you will be sitting on The Postal Museum’s Executive Management team. You will be responsible for achieving the organisation’s admissions income and visitor number targets and building its profile externally. As a Community Fundraising Volunteering Officer, you will be responsible for the coordination and delivery of new and existing fundraising volunteering programmes, with a view to increasing levels of participation and enhancing volunteer’s experiences through sector-leading volunteer stewardship. Position: UK Fisheries Transparency Advocacy Officer & Coordinator

Position overview

This is an exciting opportunity to work with leading UK NGOs dedicated to protecting, conserving, and restoring our ocean. The Environmental Justice Foundation (EJF) will be working with Client Earth and Open Seas to promote UK leadership in improving domestic and international fisheries transparency and governance to end illegal, unreported and unregulated (IUU) fishing and related abuses.

This is a new coalition which pools the expertise of three leading NGOs in the marine space to improve the UK’s anti-IUU fishing systems and policies and to promote UK leadership on ocean governance and fisheries transparency across the world, such as through its spearheading of the IUU Fishing Action Alliance. We are intent on driving positive policy change at a UK-wide level towards sustainable and legal fishing, prioritising increased transparency in the UK fisheries sector, and endorsement and adoption of the Global Charter for Fisheries Transparency, which is the bedrock of our work. We are also encouraging the UK, as a significant global market for seafood, to work closely with other markets, such as the EU, the USA or Japan, to harmonise policies to stop IUU fishing. To make this happen, we are engaging with key decision-makers, strengthening relationships with the seafood industry and the NGO community, and using media engagement strategically.

To oversee the delivery of these objectives, we seek a full-time Advocacy Officer & Coordinator to drive positive change in the UK Government and Parliament and coordinate our project's successful management. You will have excellent advocacy, public relations and organisational skills and can work with a highly motivated and diverse team. You also possess great written and verbal communication skills, initiative and professional drive. Experience in working within coalitions and on fisheries policy are advantages.

Responsibilities

Advocacy delivery:

• Drive the coalition’s policy and advocacy goals towards the UK Government, parliamentarians, advisers and other relevant stakeholders.
• Develop and deliver effective advocacy strategies
• Draft persuasive, concise policy briefs that demonstrate why transparent fisheries benefit the UK, the devolved regions, and the UK’s relations with other countries.
• Support cross-party advocacy efforts in London in parallel to coalition efforts in Edinburgh.
• Help craft meaningful communication materials for both traditional and online media.
• Engage the UK seafood industry and retailers where needed to push for joint action towards policy-makers.
• Organise meetings and events to achieve policy goals.

Strategic coordination:

• Act as the focal point for the coalition's three NGOs, managing and overseeing the delivery of coalition outputs.
• Convene broader meetings with other NGOs working on relevant issues to update them on progress and seek inputs and perspectives.
• Ensure coalition processes are respected and coordinate the further development of the coalition’s strategy, vision, and mission.
• Advise and creatively support partner organisations in designing and implementing campaign strategies to achieve set objectives and outcomes.
• Organise and chair the coalition’s in-person meetings and regular update calls.

Project implementation support:

• Support the project team in implementing our clear objectives and allocating resources to various outcomes/outputs. Ensure that work plans and deadlines are adhered to or adjusted if needed.
• Facilitate discussion, negotiation, consensus-building and decision-making within the coalition. Although each coalition partner is responsible for designing and implementing their work plan and strategies, your guidance is essential to ensure that goals are met and progress is tracked.
• Oversee the project budget with support from EJF’s COO, including creating annual budgets, monitoring expenses, and ensuring all expenditures on planned activities are done on time.

Requirements

• Experience: At least three years experience in policy and public relations roles, preferably within environmental or advocacy organisations, or in government. Excellent organisational and project management skills, with a collaborative and positive attitude. Strategic and pragmatic thinker, ideally with expertise in policy and advocacy. Have a proactive attitude and an ability to function on your own initiative with limited supervision.
• Experience working in partnerships: Great interpersonal, facilitation and negotiation skills. and the ability to apply a structured and flexible approach are essential.
• Education/relevant experience: Relevant experience or degree in public policy or relations, environmental policy, political science, economics, organisational management or any relevant field is an advantage.
• Language skills: Excellent written and verbal communication skills in English.
• Passion for conservation and human rights: Genuine interest in bringing about policy change on marine conservation, biodiversity, human rights and environmental issues.
• Travel: Availability for travel within the UK and potentially Europe.

Background

Hackney Migrant Centre (HMC) delivers a free advice and support service for vulnerable migrants who have immigration, housing, welfare and health problems. We support visitors to secure their immigration status and move out of homelessness and destitution in the long-term, as well as assisting to address immediate issues, such as access to healthcare. HMC’s work is informed by a vision of a UK where no one is forced into destitution, exploitation or vulnerability as a result of their immigration status.

We have secured funding from Trust for London to employ an Immigration Advisor. The Immigration Advisor will provide immigration advice and assist visitors to make immigration and asylum applications. The postholder will work alongside external advisors to provide initial immigration advice on matters including human rights based applications, asylum, trafficking and family reunion. Advisors will work alongside Immigration Caseworkers and volunteers to coordinate and oversee the next steps for visitors after the initial immigration advice has been provided.

This role sits within the Immigration team, consisting of an Immigration Team Manager (part time), an Immigration Caseworker and a Long Residence Immigration Caseworker. HMC also benefits from two Housing & Destitution Caseworkers and the support of a Fundraising Officer and Volunteer & Participation Manager who are managed by the Operations Manager and CEO. HMC is supported by over 50 dedicated volunteers who work across the organisation. In addition, HMC works closely with a number of partner organisations to ensure visitors can access specialist legal advice and long-term support with immigration, housing, destitution, health and wellbeing. These include, Together with Migrant Children and Islington Law Centre.

We are keen to hear from applicants who have OISC Level 3 accreditation, the equivalent IAAS or a valid exemption. We will consider applicants with OISC Level 2 accreditation who can demonstrate experience of skills required below.

MAIN DUTIES

1. Advice and casework

- Provide high quality advice and representation for visitors with complex or urgent cases, specific vulnerabilities or those who would otherwise face particular difficulty in accessing representation from legal aid providers. For advisors with Level 3 OISC accreditation, this will be up to and including appeal-stage casework.

- Assist in the supervising of the work of the Immigration Caseworkers and volunteers.

- Provide training to HMC’s volunteers on immigration issues and maintain up to date resources.

- Provide immigration advice and support to the Housing staff team where available housing options and routes out of destitution are dependent on future immigration applications.

2. Collaborative working

- Work with HMC’s existing external advice partners to ensure effective, co-ordination of advocacy and casework support on a wide range of issues.

- Develop links and partnerships with other organisations to enable effective joint working.

- Provide information, statistics and case studies to external and internal stakeholders to support campaigning, advocacy and research relevant to HMC’s visitor group.

- Work closely with partner organisations to identify legal issues affecting HMC’s visitor group and, where appropriate, contribute to litigation and strategic policy work undertaken by external stakeholders to address these matters.

3. Compliance and Regulation

- Ensure HMC is meeting the standards required to maintain OISC accreditation.

- Keep up to date with legislation and guidance required to provide immigration advice at OISC L3 or OISC L2 dependent on accreditation level and meet the relevant OISC competence requirements, including maintaining a Personal Competence record of personal objectives regarding training and development.

- Ensure accurate record keeping using HMC’s case management system.

- Work with the Immigration Team Manager to ensure an effective monitoring system for the work and outcomes of the Immigration Team for funding and reporting purposes.

- Administrative tasks relevant to the post.

4. OTHER DUTIES

The post holder will be expected to:

- Implement sensitively HMC’s policies and procedures, especially with regards to confidentiality and equal opportunities

- Work collaboratively with other HMC staff, volunteers and professional advisors

BACKGROUND

The Helen Bamber Foundation (HBF) is a pioneering Human Rights charity supporting refugees and asylum seekers who are the survivors of trafficking and torture, including gender-based and ‘honour-based’ violence. Recognising the complexity of each client’s suffering and needs, the Foundation provides specialist medical consultation, therapeutic care, legal protection and practical support to survivors of human rights violations by helping men, women and children heal the emotional and physical damage they have suffered through torture, trafficking or other forms of cruelty.  We take the learning from our work to develop partnerships to increase survivors’ access to services, and use the learning generated by our clients and partners to drive system change.

Since August 2020, Asylum Aid has been part of the Helen Bamber Foundation Group. Asylum Aid operates as an independent charity, led by its own Executive Director within the group structure, and is ambitious about growing its impact and reach in the future to ensure protection from persecution for those who need it.  For over thirty years, Asylum Aid has been providing legal representation to some of the most vulnerable people seeking asylum. It has built an expert service, delivering vital and life-saving services in some of the most complex legal cases, with a particular speciality working with unaccompanied children, survivors of trafficking, torture or other forms of human cruelty, and stateless people.
