Young Carers Volunteer: Role Description 

We are recruiting passionate and motivated volunteers looking for an opportunity to make a significant impact on the wellbeing of Young Carers’ in Wandsworth.

Please note that this role is not eligible for visa sponsorship.  

Outline of service 

Our new Young Carers’ Connect project is designed to support the wellbeing of Young Carers’ in Wandsworth. The aim of the service is to reduce isolation, promote wellbeing, connect young people and provide opportunities for fun and respite.

Wandsworth Carers’ Centre supports individuals who are looking after someone who has an illness or disability. By volunteering with us you can help look after the health and wellbeing of Carers and provide them with the opportunity to take a break from their responsibilities and have time out for themselves. 

Outline of Role 

As a Young Carers’ volunteer, you will have the opportunity to support in a wide range of exciting and dynamic activities such as peer support groups, workshops, events, activities and trips. 

Main Responsibilities 

• Building rapport with Young Carers and helping them to feel safe and comfortable 

• Co-facilitating workshops and groups 

• Supporting with the facilitation of trips, events and activities 

• Supporting with setting up and tidying up 

• Supporting with keeping a record of attendance 

• Actively participating in activities, games, events and trips 

• Recognising and responding appropriately to safeguarding concerns by reporting to them to the responsible member of staff 

• Upholding confidentiality 

• Maintaining good communication with responsible staff member.

Other Duties: May be agreed with the responsible staff member as per the requirements of the group.

Hours: Availability after school and/or during school holidays. For peer support groups or regular activities: A minimum commitment of one session a month. 

Expenses: Reasonable expenses (e.g. travel and parking) incurred through carrying out volunteering activities will be reimbursed, upon the production of receipts. 

Supervision: Regular sessions with the appropriate staff member to be arranged mutually.

Are you interested in volunteering in a role supported, supervised and guided by experienced Integration Casework Coordinators to provide telephone and/or face to face advice about welfare and housing rights and pathways to refugee clients, including assistance with filling forms, liaising with government agencies and council offices, drafting letters, among other assistance to newly granted refugees?

Would a varied role where you could help clients by researching housing options updating client information on our casework database and much more throughout your volunteering enhance your skills and experiences to achieve your goals whilst making a difference?

Would you like to be a part of a busy team, working with experience Integration Casework Coordinators to provide much needed support to their caseload of clients?

Are you able to commit to at least 1 day (10:00 – 17:00) per week on either Tuesdays, Wednesdays or Thursdays consistently, ideally for a minimum of 6 months in this role?

If yes, then this could be the perfect voluntary role for you within the Refugee Council.

You will be a part of our friendly and supportive London Integration & Housing Pathways team and will receive regular support and supervision from Integration Casework Coordinators. As part of a comprehensive induction process, you will receive training on working with refugees and people seeking asylum, including an introduction to the asylum process and the legal framework, rights and entitlements, and on how to support people practically whilst volunteering as a Refugee Integration & Housing Pathways Volunteer. If you are successful in this role, you must be available to attend the below in person training sessions.

• Tuesday 2nd September - 

  AM - Induction & Working with refugees – move on period

  PM - Working with refugees – confidentiality, boundaries, working with interpreters

• Wednesday 10th September - 

  AM - Housing pathways training – to include homelessness law and housing pathway options

  PM - Universal Credit & other benefits options

• Tuesday 16th September - 

  AM - Practical systems training

  PM - Client database training

You will also receive support and information throughout your role and will have access to organisational training sessions that are accessible to staff and volunteers. We will also reimburse you with lunch and travel expenses, in line with our volunteer expenses policy.

Along with all other staff, the worker may be required to:

a) carry out legal research of case outcomes, providing brief (approximately 200 words) case summaries in civil law, criminal law and family law.

b) assist with the general day to day administration (including providing case updates to clients and other third parties, drafting of documents and helping to create and update a monthly newsletter)

c) supervise and mentor student volunteers;

d) support the Centre in contact with the public, legal practitioners and other community sector organisations;

Amy’s Place is a partnership between the Amy Winehouse Foundation and Clarion Housing, providing supported living accommodation for young women aged 18-30 in recovery from drugs, alcohol and other addictive behaviors.

An enthusiastic, reliable and compassionate volunteer with good interpersonal skills and a desire to help others. The volunteer must be a fully qualified Dietitian or Nutritional Therapist and have training and/or experience working with individuals with eating disorders.

Activities

• Supporting the nutritional needs of young women with health issues on a limited budget.
• Providing support with meal planning, cooking skills, food safety, and day-to-day problem solving around food and eating.
• Providing wisdom and accurate nutrition education around healthy eating for the individual.

Qualifications/ Experience

• Must be a fully qualified Dietitian or Nutritional Therapist.
• As many of the residents have eating disorders it is essential for the volunteer to have training and/or clinical experience working with individuals with eating disorders.
• Must have professional liability insurance and be a member of a professional body ie. HCPC, BANT
• This role requires us to carry out a check through the Disclosure and Barring Service for the Enhanced DBS

Commitment

Baking and cooking helps to relax, get creative and indulge in our senses. Often, it can spark nostalgia and helps us to recreate positive experiences or memories. Inspire and motivate people in our services to do something that brings joy, an opportunity to learn new skills whilst connecting with others over sharing baked goods and delicious meals.

We work with people who need support with their mental health across London and the South East. Our support ranges from registered accommodation services for people with severe mental health conditions to drop-in community and crisis services.

In the last year, 9,499 adults accessed Hestia’s mental health support.

We help people to feel safe, develop hope for a better future, and achieve their personal goals. These goals may include rebuilding relationships with family members and friends or connecting more with their local community.

What you will be doing

• Research and plan new recipes for cooking/baking sessions in collaboration with the group each week
• Encourage individuals to participate in the sessions and delegate cooking tasks
• Support individuals to shop for ingredients needed for the session
• Support individuals each week in setting up for the sessions and tidying away afterwards
• Encourage individuals to participate in all aspects of the planning and attendance
• Keep a record of attendees, provide feedback and report any concerns to the staff team

The skills you need

• Food Safety Certificate/knowledge or willingness to complete relevant training
• Passion and knowledge of healthy eating and cooking
• Ability to engage, encourage and motivate individuals to participate in sessions
• Ability to provide a supportive and inclusive atmosphere

Amy’s Place is a partnership between the Amy Winehouse Foundation and Clarion Housing Group providing supported living accommodation for young women in recovery and receiving support with drug and alcohol issues.

A confident and well-experienced music teacher, who will support young women to develop their musical abilities, and positively encourage creative expression to help young women channel their feelings into music.

• Providing musical instrument lessons to students encompassing both theoretical and practical education.
• Developing and delivering individual session plans and documented session outcomes in order to assist each student’s personal growth
• Supporting the creativity and self-expression of the students
• Working collaboratively with other staff at Amy’s Place in order to provide the best support for each individual student
• Offering a range of skills such as; songwriting, improvisation, song interpretation for covers.

Support 

•  Volunteers receive a thorough induction and have access to any relevant in-house and external training.
•  Volunteers have a named supervisor providing day-to-day support and encouragement.
• Reasonable travel and will be reimbursed.

This is a flexible opportunity and volunteering times and frequency will vary depending on your availability and the needs of service users.  It might be every week or fortnight, 3 to 4 hours, ideally for a minimum of 3 months.
