Job description

We are desperately seeking more volunteer teachers to deliver outdoor learning sessions.

The River Thames Boat Project provides outdoor learning for primary schools. The holistic benefits of outdoor learning, and the high quality of our education programmes means that we're over subscribed and school children face the possibility of missing out on a fantastic learning opportunity.

A school group arrives at the boat in the morning and are allocated into small working groups which rotate around different activity stations. Activities involve hands-on learning and cover geography, science, and environmental information. Each working group will be chaperoned by an adult that comes with the class. Volunteer teachers are provided with pre-set lesson plans and teaching objectives. Volunteers can use their own experiences, and personalities to bring the sessions to life.

No prior teaching experience is required - full training and ongoing support are provided. We just ask that volunteers meet the following criteria:

  • enthusiasm for outdoor learning, with primary school children
  • ability to learn and deliver set lesson plans
  • maintain the charity's excellent standards of professionalism

Volunteers help with equipment set-up before client groups arrive, deliver engaging sessions and pack equipment away/clean up after client groups have left. Volunteering days start at 9am and finish around 3:15pm.

Education days are weekdays in March-November (excluding school holidays) and exact dates vary each month subject to school bookings. Volunteers are asked to provide a minimum of 12 days per year, and should be available regularly during their initial training period.

in return, we offer opportunities to:

  • join a friendly and sociable team of like-minded people
  • learn new skills/information
  • network with clients and volunteers
  • give back to the community
