Independent Living Advisor - Direct Payments
Location: Centre for Independent Living, Mo Mowlam House, Clem Atlee Court, SW6 7BF
Salary: £26,500 per annum pro rata
Hours: Full-time, 37.5 hours per week (Monday to Friday 9am–5pm)
Contract: Fixed to 31st March 2026, with potential to extend to permanent

The Organisation

Action on Disability (AoD), founded in 1979, is one of London’s leading Deaf and Disabled People’s Organisations. As we believe in the social model of Disability, our values and principles embrace inclusive and accessible ways of working both internally and in all our activities, seek the participation and contribution of our members, and encourage and respect diversity.

The organisation is a medium sized charity with a Board of Trustees (at least 75% is Disabled trustees), 20 staff and a strong ad hoc staff and volunteer base including many with direct experience of Disability - all of whom are passionate about removing the barriers that Disabled people face.

AoD provides five key services. These are: Youth, Employment, Welfare Benefits, Independent Living and Advocacy.

AoD’s Independent Living Service
The Independent Living Service (Direct Payments) is a new service that will provide support to Direct Payment users within the borough of Hammersmith and Fulham. The service will enable Disabled people to have genuine choice and control over the way in which they lead their lives. The post-holder will be working alongside disabled people to enable them to have more choice and control over their care and support needs.

The Role

In this role you will be providing essential information, advice and support to individuals from diverse backgrounds. You will work with Disabled clients to empower them to take control of the support they need by using Direct Payments, employing their own staff and accessing activities or services. You will ensure that individuals have the right information to make informed choices and will help them to set up and manage their chosen support.

You will have excellent communication, interpersonal and IT skills and the ability to work as part of a team. Experience of budgeting and recruitment are essential for this role.

Experience of working in social care is not essential as training will be provided, however a “can-do” attitude, a commitment to a person-centred approach and a willingness to learn is a must. Being part of a small team, there is a lot of opportunity for you to develop and learn new skills.

The work is varied and calls upon a wide range of skills, and there is huge job satisfaction in supporting people to achieve greater wellbeing and independence.

About this key role

A key member of the St Giles Yorkshire team, as well as our Central SOS+ team, you’ll be responsible for developing and delivering 1-2-1 educational sessions to children and young people on topics such as grooming, weapons awareness, the reality of prison, gangs, county lines and child sexual exploitation. You’ll also need to work closely with partner agencies and attend multi-agency meetings and support the design and development of new sessions and materials. All the while, you’ll be supported by a Peer Advisor with lived experience of adverse experiences linked to exploitation, county lines or prison. 

What we are looking for

• Experience of engaging with challenging children and young people, e.g., those with complex needs, who are reluctant to discuss their needs or who are angry and confused
• A track record gained working with socially excluded children, young people and adults, including delivering/facilitating sessions to groups – especially socially excluded children and young people in schools or similar settings
• Knowledge of gangs, knife crime and patterns of offending in West Yorkshire or a similar area, plus a proven ability to negotiate and network with partner agencies to establish links to further the aims of a project
• An Education and Training and/or Mentoring Level 3 qualification, or similar, or a willingness to work towards this
• A flexible and collaborative approach, a positive attitude, emotional resilience, confidence when speaking in front of a group and a flair for planning sessions using a variety of resources

Job Title: Children and Family Worker

About the role

Are you passionate about providing safe and stable accommodation to women and children escaping domestic abuse? Wanting to help make a difference and provide specialist support to them to gain greater independence? This might be the role for you.

As a Children and Family worker, you will be based within our Women's Refuge service, supporting women and children up to the age of 15 who have escaped domestic abuse. You will deliver trauma-informed, child and family centred support to promote safety and wellbeing, working collaboratively with mothers to strengthen the parent-child relationship during a time of crisis. You will support with both emotional and practical day-to-day support. This is typically done through key work sessions, risk assessments, and empowerment focused activities. 

You will play a vital role in supporting families, being the sole specialist within the service, which gives you autonomy to shape the role based on your expertise and experience. You will lead on child-focused support, as well as working part of the wider team to provide the support to mothers. You will deliver a range of support for children and young people, as well as family and parenting support. 

About you

We are looking for someone who has a real passion to support families and children who have experienced domestic abuse. You will have a trauma-informed understanding of domestic abuse and the impact it has on families, and will be able to engage in sensitive conversations, recognising signs on trauma, and being proactive to support families to overcome this. This is a hands-on, active role, ideal for someone who is creative, energetic, and passionate about working directly with families. You will be a team player, able to collaborate and provide support to colleagues as needed. 

• A background in working with adults and children, particularly from trauma affected backgrounds
• Experience in supporting mothers in helping children transition to new schools
• Proven ability to plan and deliver engaging play sessions, after school activities, and family events as well as religious and national celebrations
• Confidence in working with children who may have behavioural challenges, being able to signpost to early intervention services
• Experience/ability to support children with special educational needs or additional behavioural needs

Motivating and encouraging your clients will be a key part of the role, as well the ability to build rapport, trust and actively listen to their needs. Specialist Support Workers within Look Ahead are required to have either an extra dimension of experience or a higher qualification level as determined relevant for the particular post. Specialist Support Workers provide information, social inclusion and vocational opportunities to support people to recover and stay well; exercise choice and control in their care and lives; and participate on an equal footing in the community. Support is also provided to develop a model of re-enablement towards self-advocacy, self-management and empowerment, incorporating the principles and practice of recovery, co-production and peer support.

The 5-week rolling rota pattern includes both evening and weekend shifts. The shifts are from 07:00 to 15:00 or from 14:00 to 22:00, with a mix of both types. You will have approximately one full weekend off every five weeks, plus one additional Saturday off and one additional Sunday off, resulting in a total of two full working weekends in every five weeks.

About the role:

This role is based at our office in Sheffield, dealing with inbound enquiries and making outbound calls to victims of crime, reviewing and triaging referrals from the police.

As a Victim Care Advocate you will:

• Work directly with people who have been impacted by crime, assessing support needs and completing risk assessments, providing immediate support and signposting to ongoing support and advocacy
• Develop knowledge and links with other organisations who support victims of crime

You will be:

• A self-starter with good organisational & time management skills
• An excellent communicator
• Working across teams & with external agencies to achieve goals
• Working in a digital environment & be able to use a range of IT equipment & programmes.

About this key role

Our successful candidate will work one-to-one with young people to understand their individual needs, strengths, and challenges, creating tailored support plans that incorporate neurodiversity-informed approaches. You will conduct robust risk and strengths-based needs assessments, prioritising safeguarding and ensuring appropriate interventions and escalation of risks, plus develop and maintain strong relationships with stakeholders.

We will also count on you to make appropriate referrals and signposting to specialist neurodiverse support services and community resources and to advocate with education, health, and social care providers for reasonable adjustments, tailored support, and inclusion for neurodiverse young people.  Accurately recording all aspects of work, including action plans, outcomes, and session data, ensuring high-quality case recording, is also an important element of this role, as is efficiently closing cases, identifying appropriate referral routes for ongoing support and crisis management.

What we are looking for

• Proven experience working with children, young people, and/or vulnerable adults, delivering effective interventions that have resulted in positive outcomes
• Experience independently addressing safeguarding issues with children, young people, and adults at risk of violence or exploitation
• Skilled in conducting thorough risk assessments and identifying the needs of young people at risk of significant harm
• Extensive experience of managing a caseload of clients presenting with support needs and achieving set targets for employment outcomes with sensitivity to diverse needs and trauma
• Proven ability to work effectively as part of a multi-agency team
• Excellent IT, interpersonal and communication skills, both verbal and written
• A professional, collaborative and flexible approach to your work
