About the role
Richmond AID have 3 main advice teams: Information Navigation, Benefits Advice and Money Advice. We also administer a number of grants on behalf of local grant giving charities and the local authority. Our teams are busier than ever and this role will play a vital part in supporting the team with administration tasks including; taking client enquiries from the phone, website and email and uploading them to our database, scanning and photocopying.
You will spend your time working directly with clients with a range of physical, sensory and mental health impairments to help them to fill in grant allocation forms and other forms and helping people to know their rights. You will also support our advice teams administratively; arranging appointments, sending emails and letters and uploading information to our database.
You will receive training in a range of advice areas (housing, health and social care, benefits, transport and travel) as well as other relevant topics such as various mental health conditions, managing challenging behaviour, professional boundaries, and case management. You will be supported by a friendly team of experienced advisers who will have the opportunity to shadow and you will also have access to a range of external training and development opportunities.
You will need to have clear written and oral communication skills as you will need to make phone calls and write emails and letters to clients as well as providing progress updates to the team.
You will work closely with our experienced advice team and we can offer opportunities for training and development in a range of areas including social care, housing and benefits to support you on your journey to becoming and advisor.
About you
To be successful in this role you will have solid administration and organisational skills, and a high degree of accuracy and attention to detail. You will have strong communication skills across all levels and will be a real team player with a genuine interest in supporting disabled people.
An interest in developing advice skills in essential and experience or a background in advice and information will be an advantage.
You will have excellent communication and IT skills, administrative skills and be fully competent on Microsoft applications. You will have the ability to work independently as well as part of a team.
The ideal candidate will be passionate about social justice and the empowerment of disabled people and excited to learn valuable skills on the job.

You'll maintain a consistently high quality of advice and helping clients by providing support, guidance and feedback on a day-to-day basis by:
- actively supporting the quality of generalist advice and pathfinding (triage) by guiding the team to information sources, checking that all aspects of a client's situation have been considered, checking that follow up work is progressed, that research and campaigns issues are identified and outcomes are recorded
- actively supporting each team member to develop their skills and competences, by guiding, demonstrating, encouraging, suggesting, coaching, giving timely & constructive feedback and challenging appropriately
- adapting the level of support to individual competence and taking account of the whole team’s needs.

PRINCIPAL TASKS AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Supervision

Ensure that all advice given under your supervision conforms to Citizens Advice quality standards and with our systems and procedures.

Supervise advice teams in our main office, at outreach locations and on remote services (e.g. Adviceline) to ensure smooth running of services and client journeys.

Manage drop-in sessions at our main office and at external locations

Identify general training and support needs in paid and voluntary staff under your supervision and feed back into the organisation’s learning and development plan.

Provide timely feedback to paid and voluntary trainee advisers by observing client interviews and reviewing follow-up work
Quality assurance and training

Working as part of our case review team, conduct case reviews to set rectification action for both paid and voluntary staff to ensure Citizens Advice quality standards are met.

Keep up to date with legislation, case law, policies and procedures, and disseminate updates to paid and voluntary staff through our communications channels.
Research, campaigns and partnership building

Take part in the organisation’s responses to local research and campaign issues by supporting paid and voluntary staff to collect case studies and statistical data.

Contribute to developing partnerships with other organisations to support our advice work.
Other duties and responsibilities

PERSON SPECIFICATION
Essential

Ability to commit to and work within, the aims, principles and policies of the Citizens Advice service and the vision of Citizens Advice Kensington and Chelsea.

If not currently a supervisor, a minimum of two years’ experience and demonstrable ability of delivering good quality generalist advice.

Experience of delivering advice across different channels (telephone, in-person, etc.).

About the role
You will ensure you and your team will deliver high quality legal services and manage our Legal Aid Contract, with your main focus being on your own caseload and to manage and supervise the legal teams who are advocating for clients with housing issues, as well as bringing about systemic change. You will be dealing with personnel issues, providing professional support and supervision to your team, including but not limited to, independent file reviews (IFRs), time recording and good case management, as well as carrying your own caseload of housing litigation.
Contributing to the strategic direction of Shelter legal services nationally will be an important aspect of the role too, as will taking the lead on delivering strategic change aligned to Shelter’s strategy and ensuring Legal aid contract requirements and performance targets are met.
You will be able to identify test case opportunities to address systemic bad practice and so achieve change for a greater number of people and will work closely with the Head of Legal Services, the Hub Management Team and teams within Communications, Policy and Campaigns and Business Development. As a key member of the management team, you will also get to play your part in the management of our offices, including attending management team meetings and collaborating with other teams.
About you
You will be an experienced housing solicitor, court advocate, carrying your own caseload as well as managing and supervising others. You will have a minimum of 4 years post qualification legal practice experience, have supervisor status and have substantial knowledge of housing and homelessness law. You are able to carry out research and policy analysis in the areas of housing, homeless and welfare law, produce reports and presentations.

Plumstead Community Law Centre is a free specialist legal advice charity located in central Woolwich in South East London. We provide specialist legal advice and advocacy in the areas of immigration, welfare benefits and employment People can access our services via telephone or email, and through the Advice Hub outreach services we attend in local community centres. In 2024 over 1,400 local people accessed our advice and representation services, resulting in a range of financial and non-financial benefits.
