This is an exciting opportunity to invest in the lives of autistic young people (aged 9-19). You will work in our Aspire Team to further develop specialist youth work provision in Cambridge City and South Cambridgeshire, supporting young people’s emotional well-being and helping them to overcome challenge and develop social skills. You will join our team of youth workers and volunteers to develop and deliver weekly social groups, shared interest groups, one-to-one work, family support, school-based alternative education, and trips and residential experiences. The normal working week will be 37.5 hours (5 days), there is a need for flexibility. The role requires regular evening work. Part-time hours will be considered, minimum 22.5 hours (3 days).

Duties include:

• Build positive relationships with autistic children and young people through different programme activities.
• Support individuals making the transition from primary to secondary school, and from secondary school to post 16/18 options, giving them the best possible opportunity of staying in education, employment or training that is fulfilling and helps them reach their potential.
• Work with others in the team to expand the provision and develop new youth clubs in specific geographical areas based on identified needs.
• Create opportunities for children and young people to develop life skills, in response to the needs identified by participants themselves, their families and others, through courses and one-off sessions, with individuals and small groups.
• Facilitate the exploration of young people’s values and beliefs thereby encouraging their personal, social and spiritual development.
• Contribute to partnership working with external organisations and agencies in developing effective youth work provision.
• Support the recruitment, training and management of teams of volunteers and young leaders to act as positive role models who can support the delivery of youth clubs.
• Be a face-to-face contact with the public, representing Romsey Mill to individuals and organisations and reflecting the Christian values of the organisation to those whom the organisation serves.

We are seeking individuals who have 2 or more years of youth work experience and a general qualification to Level 3 (A levels or equivalent) including Level 2 (GCSE) in English and Maths.

About the role

The Administrative Assistant (Advice and Information) role provides important administrative support to our small, friendly Advice and Information Team. The role will focus on providing administrative support to the following two parts of the wider team:  

- The Outbound Permanence service. This provides specialist advice by email, supported by legal research, country-specific written guidance, and individual consultations where necessary, to local authority social workers and lawyers considering the placement of children in care proceedings with relatives and friends overseas on all legal orders. The service also delivers regular training and events.

- CoramBAAF members’ Advice Line. This covers all aspect of adoption, fostering, kinship and related areas in the UK. It is busy and popular with professionals, primarily social workers, who use the service. It offers telephone and email advice, prioritising speed, and quality of service.

The role we are recruiting for is as follows: 

One Full Time: 35 hours per week - we offer flexible working which for this role is three days on site in our office in Bethnal Green and two days working from home.

You will work with clients (managing a caseload) who have mental health support needs, to assist them in securing sustainable paid employment in line with their preferences, to access training, education and volunteering opportunities. You will use a client led/person centred support approach.

Spear Centre Support

• You will form part of a central support team that enables Spear Centres to deliver high quality, high impact sessions to young people when one of their team is sick or the centre is short-staffed
• You will be placed where the support is needed most, working peripatetically across centres. This could look like 2 months based in one centre or various weeks working across different centres both in London and across the UK

Trainee recruitment

• Supporting Spear Centres to ensure that the maximum number of Spear Trainees are enrolled on each programme, through active face-to-face recruitment

Main Responsibilities:

• Plan and deliver a structured programme of enjoyable, recreational, high-quality activities to meet the needs of children and young people with additional needs and disabilities who attend Short Breaks clubs.
• To coordinate and take responsibility for the planning, allocation of places, and sufficient staffing to ensure safe delivery of Short Breaks clubs.
• To assist in the recruitment, training and ongoing development of the Disability staff team.
• Leadership and Line Management of a team of Play/Youth Workers and volunteers.
• Have responsibility for processing new referrals, initial assessments, individual care plans and any associated risk assessments or specialist plans to ensure we meet individual needs.
• To be the lead practitioner providing the staff team with advice, coaching and on-site management of club structure.
• To develop strategies and behavioural support plans for young people attending activities and access YMCA Disability Services.
• To be aware of Ofsted requirements and ensure Short Breaks clubs for children are compliant, with ongoing monitoring.
• Maintain and monitor agreed attendance levels and activity budget.
• To promote clubs and share stories via social media. Manage cohort numbers and waiting lists efficiently. 
• Lead in Administering medication, PEG feeds and undertaking movement and handling for children and young people with complex health needs. Undergo relevant training and transfer this knowledge onto the staff team.
• Work closely with individual children and young people and their families to identify a range of social, recreational and leisure activities to meet the needs of young people and children.
• Ensure that all young people are made to feel valued and enabled to develop and improve self-esteem, life skills, self-confidence and positive experiences
• To gain young people’s feedback, capturing their voice in shaping and evaluating future club sessions.

Salary

London based candidates will also receive £2,600 London contribution (pro rata). The pro-rated amount is £2,080. This will rise to £2,700 (pro rata) from 1st September 2025. The pro-rated amount will be £2,160.

Annual leave 

Full-time staff entitlement, pro-rated for part-time staff: 33 days (inc bank & public holidays) + 3 closure days (two in December and one in July) + additional length of service entitlement (one day per year of service, up to 5 days) 

In order to be eligible for the role, applicants must:

• Have achieved a grade C/ grade 4 or higher in GCSE Maths and English/ achieved National 5s or Standard Grade at Credit level (grades 1-2) in Maths and English (or equivalent).

Job Purpose
