Volunteering in the shop

We've recently reopened our Islington Shop with a gorgeous new look inspired by the neighbouring film studios. In amongst the retro cinema seats and beautiful backstage velvet curtains you'll find unique vintage treasures and lovingly curated donated stock, hand picked by our brilliant volunteer team.

Our Islington Shop Volunteers are in the middle of it all, and there’s plenty to get involved with. You might be sorting and pricing stock, engaging with customers, ringing items through the till, creating fantastic window displays or keeping our shop floor looking organised.

It’s up to you how much you commit. We have volunteers who support for a couple of hours a week and some do more. Many people volunteer either a morning or an afternoon each week - this is something that will be discussed at the selection stage, after you’ve applied.

AkiOke Music Club is a CIO run by a small group of like-minded individuals, passionate about empowering young people with disabilities through music.

The AkiOke vision is to provide a fun and inclusive social environment for attendees to explore music, build confidence, and connect with others by singing.

Our aim is to provide a regular music/vocal training session using a range of technology to enhance singing experiences that encourages participation and social interaction for vulnerable young adults.

JOB FUNCTION

The post-holder will co-lead on the setup and delivery of AkiOke, a grassroots music and karaoke club. This joyful and inclusive weekly music-based social group is for adults with mild learning difficulties. You will work closely with a young adult with lived experience, who initiated the project and serves as its creative lead.

This role also involves collaboration the Volunteer Coordinator and Trustees, ensuring that all operations are guided by the lived experiences of participants and supported by sustainable outreach and funding strategies.

You will develop strategic and campaign plans and assist marketing volunteers in delivering effective, inclusive campaigns.

One of our female befriendees is especially keen to improve her English skills and would benefit greatly from a supportive volunteer who can help her build confidence through regular, friendly conversations.

What is the Talking Bubble Project?

A phone-based service that connects volunteers with individuals who may feel isolated or lonely. Through regular calls, you’ll help build friendships, brighten someone’s day, and offer emotional support — in a way that’s sensitive to their cultural and language needs.

In this case, we are looking for a Farsi-speaking volunteer with a good command of English, so conversations can be held in English while using Farsi as needed to ensure understanding and comfort.

Our befriending volunteers offer long-term practical and emotional support based on each family's unique needs and potential. Role Overview

We are seeking a Voluntary Assistant to the Executive Assistant, who will directly support the Executive Assistant to the Founder in the day-to-day coordination, administration, and communications of the CIC.

You will play a vital role in helping the team stay organised, efficient, and connected as we expand our operations, events, and fundraising programmes.

This is an unpaid voluntary position for someone passionate about helping build a movement that fights CSA and supports survivors across the UK.

Key Responsibilities

• Support the Executive Assistant in managing schedules, meetings, and communications.

• Assist with preparing reports, tracking project tasks, and ensuring follow-ups through Asana.

• Help organise and document team meetings, training sessions, and fundraising events.

• Communicate with internal departments, volunteers, and external partners in a professional and sensitive manner.

• Assist with digital organisation — filing, cloud storage management, and shared document control.

• Help prepare correspondence, press materials, or short summaries for the Founder or senior team.

Role Profile
General Responsibilities

In addition to the responsibilities outlined in The Charity Commission’s The Essential Trustee: what you need to know, as a trustee you will be expected to:

● Review board papers and attend board meetings (minimum of 4 times a year)
● Give firm strategic direction to the organisation, assess risk and evaluate performance
● Ensure that Just Like Us pursues its charitable objectives and complies with its governing document and other relevant legislation or regulations
● Support the employed leadership team
● Represent Just Like Us at events

Specific Responsibilities

As Treasurer, you will also be expected to:
● Oversee Just Like Us’ financial affairs, ensuring our ongoing financial viability and compliance with legal and constitutional obligations including the Charities SORP
● Ensure that the Board of Trustees understands and complies with their financial obligations, and guide the Board in their financial appraisal of Just Like Us
● Ensure that effective and appropriate financial procedures and controls are in place
● Work with the leadership team to review and report on Just Like Us’ financial risk management process and financial health at board meetings
● Work with the CEO to produce our annual accounts and budget forecasts, and be a key point of contact during the annual audit of accounts
● Act as a counter signatory for online banking and applications to funders

As Treasurer you should have:

● Chartered Accountant status 
● Awareness and knowledge of not-for-profit accounting and the Charities SORP
● Commitment to our vision and mission
● Strategic vision and good, independent, critical judgement
● Understanding and acceptance of the legal duties, responsibilities and liabilities of trusteeship
● Analytical and evaluation skills, demonstrating good judgement
● Willingness to be available to employed staff for advice and enquiries on an ad hoc basis
