Our client the Coroners’ Court Support Service is currently recruiting for two Trustees to join its board. is an independent voluntary organisation whose trained volunteers offer emotional support and practical help to bereaved families, witnesses and others attending an Inquest at a Coroner’s Court.  They are a charity who do not receive central funding, and rely on grants and donations to be able to undertake their work. 

The CCSS is now looking to appoint their next HR Trustee onto it’s board:

HR Trustee – an experienced HR professional with a thorough understanding of good HR practice. You will demonstrate an understanding of need for staff personal development and accept the legal duties, responsibilities and liabilities of charity trusteeship and governance.

About Being a Trustee

CHIPS (Christian International Peace Service) trustees play a crucial role in advancing peace in communities worldwide. Working collaboratively as part of the Board, they provide strategic oversight to the organisation, helping to strengthen its impact and sustainability by bringing their unique expertise and skills to the team. We're particularly looking for a trustee with a strong background in finance, accounting or bookkeeping in order to help support our Director and Board in there oversight of financial matters.

About James’ Place

James’ Place Charity was set up by Clare Milford Haven and Nick Wentworth-Stanley in 2008 after their twenty-one-year-old son, James, died by suicide ten days after a minor operation. James had no history of mental illness or depression and had sought urgent help for anxiety and suicidal thoughts but didn’t find it. We know that suicide is the biggest killer of men under 50, and we know that many men find it difficult to reach out for help.

James’ Place was set up to make the experience of finding help as easy as possible. James’ Place offers men who are experiencing a suicidal crisis a brief, intensive, therapeutic intervention in a safe environment. Men who walk through the door at James’ Place will be in a space where they feel valued and respected.

We have been chosen as one of the charities for The Times and The Sunday Times Christmas Appeal 2024 and we were also thrilled to win two awards at the Royal Society for Public Health and Wellbeing Awards, winning the Public Health Minister’s Award for our innovation and strong academic focus on prevention and inclusion, as well as our regional spread and scale.

The need

Suicide is the leading single cause of death of men under 50, and more men of middle age die by suicide than other causes; 75% of all deaths by suicide are men. History shows that in times of uncertainty and economic hardship, rates of suicide increase. Deprivation, financial insecurity, and unmanageable debt are strongly associated with an increased risk of suicide in men (Samaritans). The pandemic only increased hardship and put people under more significant pressure, and the current cost of living crisis is exacerbating this further.

We know that each death by suicide results in a lifetime of devastation for families, friends and communities, and research shows that for every individual death by suicide, around 135 people are affected.

A person bereaved by suicide is 65% more likely to take their own life than if they were bereaved by another cause, and it has been estimated that every suicide costs the public purse around £1.46m.

About the roles

We’re now looking for new Trustees to help lead us forward. We’re looking for people who can:

Role Highlights:

•  Time Commitment: 4–8 hours per month (meetings held online)

The Finance Trustee will engage in all aspects of our governance, with a particular focus on financial strategy and governance.They will use their sound financial skills & experience to support the Board’s understanding & interpretation & to ensure legislative compliance.  

• To support the Board to oversee & to ensure appropriate presentation of budgets, accounts, management accounts and financial statements.
• To ensure appropriate presentation of accounts and records, ensuring that financial resources are spent in accordance with the charity’s policies, good governance, legal & regulatory requirements.
• Liaising, where applicable, with the Chair/ other appropriate members of staff and supporting on financial matters
• Supporting the Board to monitor the financial viability of the charity.
• Creating, in conjunction with relevant trustees and staff, sound financial processes and procedures for the control of the charity’s assets.
• Advising on the financial implications of the charity’s strategic plan.
• Reviewing the annual accounts and, where applicable, liaising with the charity’s external auditor to ensure the accounts are compliant with the current charities’ SORP.
• Ensuring that sound financial management is maintained and ensuring expenditure is in line with the charity’s objects.

What we're looking for

We need a finance-minded trustee who can keep us on the right track financially while we focus on creating real change. You don't need to be a charity expert (we'll teach you that), but you do need to care about what we're doing and have the skills to help us do it properly.

Your background might include:

• Professional experience in finance, accounting, or bookkeeping

• An ability to make sense of financial information and explain it to others

• Strong attention to detail (because the small stuff does matter)

• A genuine enthusiasm for our mission and charitable objects

What would be brilliant (but not essential):

• Previous charity sector experience

• Formal accounting qualifications

• Experience with charity accounting software

• Understanding of what it's like to run a small charity on a tight budget

What you'll be doing

This isn't about sitting in boardrooms making abstract decisions. You'll be:

• Keeping our finances healthy: Overseeing day-to-day financial operations and making sure our bookkeeping stays accurate

• Being our financial voice: Presenting clear, understandable financial reports at monthly trustee meetings

• Planning ahead: Leading our annual budget process and helping us make smart financial decisions

• Staying compliant: Ensuring we meet all charity financial regulations and coordinate our annual independent examination

• Managing risk: Helping us spot potential financial challenges before they become problems

• Helping with fundraising: Writing grant applications, helping come up with fundraising ideas

The need-to-know

Time commitment: Around 4-8 hours per month - this includes one monthly trustee meeting, your financial review work, and the occasional extra task that crops up

Term: We're looking for a minimum 2-year commitment initially, which then becomes a rolling 1-year term subject to the constitutional requirements. 

When we meet: We will be setting our meeting dates at the start of the organisation's year (October 2025) so everyone can plan ahead.
